Fun fact: During the black plague Poland was quarantined. This means that everyone who came into the country had to wait a couple days incase they were carrying the plague. This way, on the map for amount of deaths, there was a large gap where Poland was and we basically avoided most of it

As a Modenese myself I can confirm that the rivalry somewhat still continues to this day. It's an act of pride to go see the Bucket in the city hall... which is also kinda ridiculous now that I think about it, but still: Modenese pride!!! This entire video just made me realise that the Capulets and Montagues in Romeo and Juliet (at least the 1968 version) hating each other can finally be explained as them being Guelphs and Ghibellines

In Dante’s Divine Comedy, he does mention two families who did exist and had constant feuds amongst themselves; the Montecchi who were wealthy Ghibellines from Verona, and the Cappelletti, who were wealthy Guelphs from nearby Cremona. This then inspired the story of Romeo and Giulietta (who did not historically exist) which Shakespeare adapted into Romeo and Juliet

"La secchia rapita" is a pretty well-written comedy book, although it does become awfully stretched out in some parts (like all Italian books from this period tend to do, because there was this strange mentality of "bigger book = better") We Italians often study it in school. It's not a masterpiece, but it is a good way to try to understand this particular historic period as it is a pretty easy read all things considered.

There's more to know about that bucket actually in the last decades of the last century some Bologna's Goliardi (an association of university students which main purpose Is to make brilliant pranks to the authorities in general) made It disappear from Modena's museum tower by hiding It on a High shelf of the tower itself (with no one knowing It) as a late revenge (like they robbed It back) and asking tons of food like Parmigiano and ham from Modena's in exchange.
