Well, that's how it is in Scandinavia, downright demanded from the captains of cruising lines. No Estonian used though, even that poor native guy doesn't hesitate to go with Finnish right from the start...

Ettibridget There's about 1,000 years of developmental difference between them. We can't properly understand each other. We can usually get the general meaning in simple language, but also become mislead by the linguistic "false friends".

Except it took until 1:51 for the Estonia ship captain to start saying what the reason for the call was. He should have started stating it as soon as he realized he had a problem. The simplest rule is "presume that other people CAN hear you even if you CAN'T (or are unable by background noises) hear them". Don't WAIT to be recognized, just start calling, calling, calling.

It took until 1:51?? Have you any ides of the circumstances he found himself in? I very much doubt it. The Distress signals were blocked that night by a NATO exercise he had been trying in vain to get through for quite a while beforehand and is shocked that anyone had even replied ( even on channel16) you might want to out yourself in his shors before you start getting holier-than-thou mate.

This is some of the most sad radio conversation I ever have listned to... The guy on the bridge of m/s Estonia even take his time to say "good morning"...Maybe hi didn't realise the gravity of the situation...And to listen to it now, anf think about that the very first person who made a call, and the second, ar both dead in one of Europas biggest ship tragdedyes ...this is just so sad. All happened too fast, even it shoulden't happen at all.... condolances from youre Norwegian neighbor.

The bow on the boat is a hinged, hydraulic "door" to the car deck. It came of in very bad weather due to metall fatigue, an the boat scooped in wather in a very high rate, and got 30 degree listing before it sank. All happened fast.

Not entirely true, it´s true that she would capsize and flip around floating with keel up but not sink until a possibly a day or even a few days. Estonia would have had to be flooded in the lower decks and the water tight compartments below car deck to be able to sink as fast as she did, it was later proved that she has a hole underneath water line with keel plates bended outwards like sign from explosion.

I have been going through hours of tubes on the Estonia, And. I usually avoid rememberance days. It is for the families. But. I want to say, Estonia has saved a lot of lives. Has helped people alive in many ways. And will continue to help the planet and everyone living on it. Even now. It will be helping many who have problems with their hearing. With the sounds in this radio message. Estonia will live on.

So sad. The speculation goes that some agencies where shipping postwar equipment on this route and suddenly decided to dump it at cruise speed by raising the front visor which obviuosly took on huge amounts of water, causing the ship to capsize.

Robert U.K. The ship was built for a route between Norway and Germany including both the Baltic and the North sea. The “not built for the conditions” line is a red herring. The Baltic is no worse for weather than anywhere else in northern Europe. A sea going ship is a sea going ship. During the Falklands war, one of the troopships for the British taskforce was the MV Norland, an English Channel Ro-Ro ferry. She spent months at sea in a South Atlantic winter. Which is about 100 times worse than the Baltic.

"Are you calling mayday"? Good grief. You know you heard it. When you hear a Mayday, you speak the F up on the radio and try to aggressively find out where the problem is. The Silija Europa guy acts like he's on a coffee break when the call comes across.
@martajansson7953
@martajansson7953 5 жыл бұрын
Ok first of all, it's not really common occurrence to hear a mayday-call, so of course he's taken aback. Secondly, when Estonia didn't answer immediately he tried to contact them again within just seconds. Thirdly, there is a specific procedure to giving a mayday-call that the Estonia did not follow. Yes of course they were stressed and scared, but this is still something that may raise confusion. Fourth, either way there was absolutely nothing he could've done before knowing at least Estonians position. And even with that information, they were too far away, no matter how quickly he would've reacted he would have never made it to the Estonia in time. The way I see it, him leading the rescue operation in a calm and clear manner was one of the factors that saved lives that night.
@GintanxD
@GintanxD 5 жыл бұрын
@@martajansson7953 Yeah, I'm pretty sure receiving a mayday call from a cruise ship in the baltic sea where accident's very very rarely has occurred will take someone aback as well. Estonia sank extremely quickly and so the crew probably had no idea what or why this was happening and completely unprepared for such a rapid accident. They lost power several times
