I here’s a look at a side-by-side comparison of the 14 inch Estwing Sportsmans acts against the 9.5 inch Estwing camping Axe.
We liken this to protestant versus Catholic in someways and we liturgy lovers Often lean towards the more traditional and aesthetic side, but It’s hard to pass up the sharpness and utility of the more pedestrian camping axe.
Which would you prefer?

After about 7 years of being a firefighter, I have determined: When you're inside a fire building and you dismantling a lath and plaster wall, a window frame, or just breaking drywall it seems like it makes more sense to have a hatchet rather than a full-size axe. It's generally harder to take full swings with a full-size axe because you can't see and there might be another firefighter behind you, and sometimes there's just not enough space to load up and swing. There have been many times when I thought to myself an Estwing hammer would be great right now instead of this full-size axe. So, I'm going to carry the Protestant in black with a bright orange handle. The bright orange handle will be nice in case I ever drop it in the ash and rubble. I have always thought of a hatchet as half axe and half hammer which seems like a perfect combination for firefighting.

What an incredible insider insight into the usefulness of hatchets! Thank you for this, @mihnic0504! Protestant + bright orange handle-wrap sounds ideal for the application. We'd love to see it when you complete it :)

I'd personally go for the synthetic handle because I find it to be grippier. That said, you can't go wrong with any of the two.

It’s not so much leather wrapped as “handled with laminated leather” but I’m sure knife people have a more specific name for that kind of handle.

What's better a 14 or 16" axe for suburban home gardening?

TBH the right tool is the name of the game and unless you're bushwacking through some aggressive privet or the likes I'd say neither axe is a needed gardening tool. Instead get you a nice hand-held metal headed mallet for driving posts and a great all-arounder tool with a blade on one side and a serration on the other) and go to town :)

Using the "protestant " version I dropped a 6 inch wide gum tree. It'll do way more than you think!!

They do! It's just like the catholic model but with less . . . frills. Way cooler looking than the protestant one though, and still cuts true!

I wear my short leather handle Estwing upside down on my belt, for concealed quick draw and throw. Actually its much easier to wear and draw, and can sit down. It's a blast to throw. Its far better utilitarian camp hatchet than any of my other tomahawks or hatchets. Its one of the very best to throw. Maybe the Browing Black Label is more fun to throw, but this Estwing leather handle, hits harder and chops wood better and has the hammer surface for driving wedges instead of a spike. It's tough AF. I got no problems with mine, several hundred throws. It'll be on my side when I get back into Canoe Camping next month, first time in twenty years. Im not intending to ever do hardcore expeditions again, and especially not big portage's, but the short Estwing is lightweight, powerful and compact durable high quality. Fuck yeah!

How do you wear it upside down? Does the handle have to tuck up under your shirt etc? Can’t get my head around it.
