"Crossing rivers can be dangerous" Proceeds to cross the river at least 3 times for each shot of him crossing the river. Once for the shot. Twice to retrieve the camera. A third time to actually get to the other side with all his equipment. I love the dedication to the beautiful cinematography in these videos - simply to review a $12 harbor freight hatchet.

I doubt those were made by him. I've seen that mark multiple times, both in the Cascades and in the Sierra Nevada mountains. I'm guessing that, given the small number of marks which can be easily cut into a tree with an axe, there is probably a lot of overlap between woodsmen.

You're one of the hardest channels to put into words as to why I love it. You, being a firefighter, have access to the best tools in the woods in the business. Or as an ex firefighter, have had such. Yet you still take the time to test the common man bushcraft items, and genuinely give them a go, and are honest about your experiences, good or bad. Including with non-common man items, like the mentioned Spyderco axe. I just really appreciate you, man. I love the detail you go into the, sorry, unfucking of the tool, sometimes. Just simple things that make them worth 3x the price. All my axes are sharper, all my tools are Ballistol'd. Thanks.

I bought one a few years back and did a few modifications to it and it works just great. I sanded and polished the entire head before I sharpened it and sanded the handle and oiled it with several coats of mineral oil. I bought a sheath for it too. It is a great tool and much better than many others out there for a lot more money, just like you said.
@VTPSTTU
@VTPSTTU 3 жыл бұрын
The other important point is that someone could buy several of these, make the modifications that you did, and leave them in a couple of places. For instance, if someone had a hunting camp, this ax could stay at the camp. If one forgot to bring an ax, this one is there but doesn't represent a huge financial loss if something happens to it. If one remembers to bring another ax from home but two people are at camp, then two people can work on chopping chores.

I bought the full size HF hickory handle axe several months ago, I've been so impressed with it I recently purchased another one (I liked the grain in the handle better than the first one I picked) and also grabbed the only hickory hatchet they had left! I was so excited to get one, I know silly... But it's a great thing when a $12 tool can give you the fizz. I'll call that a win every day of the week! Looking forward to putting the hatchet through it's paces.

Being a professional homeowner myself, Harbor Freight items are amazing for when you just need something that is "good enough to do the job". I LOVE the oscillating tools they carry that go for $15. I'm a proud owner of 3 so when one tears up due to rough use I just pitch it and grab another. Well done sir, and thank you. I will be getting a couple of these for sure. The short axe is a must have and at the price point, is hard to over emphasize the value of this tool.

Love watching your shows you’re very intelligent. You seem to know a lot about a lot of things like my grandpa did. That’s why I keep coming back. Thank you for all that you do for us.

Agreed. Sometimes the axe you have is better than the one you have to save for. Especially when you need firewood.

I like that rendition of "The Gael" you've used in the video. Very fitting. Might also have to pick up one of these hatchets for myself for the next time I go out camping. Got good use out of my Mora this past trip and it did well enough, but a hatchet would've made things a tad easier lol

My main question that I may have missed is: How well does it hold an edge?
@thorvaldspear
@thorvaldspear 2 жыл бұрын
Well enough. Just the fact that it's steel makes it hold an edge pretty well, and it's not like you are going to be chopping down a forest with a hand axe.
@WR3ND

Just based on his filing of it in the other video and what I can intuit from it and his comments in this video, it's a bit on the soft side. Seems well worth the price though and you can keep a sharpening palm stone or similar with you. I mean, that handle is just about worth the price even.

That was a nice touch modifying the National Forest sign:-) The handle on this little axe, once it has been stripped and coated with boiled linseed oil, really makes the tool very special.

Thank you for this video. I like Harbor Frieght, but have been very disappointed in the past due to the poor quality of tools. However, this axe has always been if great interest. Thanks for confirming it's utility at an affordable cost. God bless you and our continued prayers for you, your family and the family of viewers.

As soon as I saw your 1st video on the HB hatchet I went and bought one. I won't use it nearly to the extent you would nor can I justify an expensive hatchet. But after watching the first video and seeing the improvements you made and seeing how much you liked the tool I knew I had found what I've been looking for. Thank you much for the help. Now... Go show us that mountain summit!

I snagged one at my local HF. They had 6 on the rack, and I picked the best (straightest) grained handle, and after stripping the varnish and giving 4 coats of BLO the handle was very nice. I took a file to the head and cleaned it up and reset the angle. I found a nice nylon cover for it and I have enjoyed using it. I have two Swedish hand axes and the frugal part of me enjoys using the $13 HF axe. 50K thumbs up. Well, this is 5 days into the video and it's already at 29K. I smell a summit video in the future. :-)
