I'm in the U.S. and 65 years old and want to have a part-time job when I retire. I've watched many of your videos. I have been teaching adults for 18 years at the local community college and spent 16 years teaching children of all ages. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I was afraid to teach on-line because I have never done it before and I'm not very good with technology because I have only taught in the classroom. You are giving me confidence to move forward with on-line teaching and giving me a lot of good resources. A million thanks. I believe I can do this after watching you. I have a Midwest accent (the most common - and the one you hear on most media) and I believe I will be a valuable asset to some children or adults. I just have to get better at using Zoom and then have to find a way to get students. You are wonderful. Ann

Good job! here are my questions. #1 When you put the students in the breakouts, can they see your shared screen and talk about it? #2 If I send them an announcement, how long will it stay on their screen in the breakout room? #3 If I 'spotlight' someone, would it show them as big as it shows up on my end as the teacher? to the other students? #4 I keep losing 'side by side' view. Why does it come and go?
@etacude4 жыл бұрын
Wow! All great questions. Let's see: 1. They can't. I send them a screen shot that they have to share themselves in their breakout rooms. 2. It should stay in their inbox for messages the whole time.

3. No, they have to change the view on their side from gallery to speaker. 4. Work on the view settings at the top. You can adjust it for the different views. I hope this helps! 😃

Thanks a lot, Eric. I hadn't used Zoom as a host, so I needed some technical tips. I watched it and immediately used them at my today's lesson. Teaching tips are also good. Similar to those what they tought us during TEFL certification. My biggest problem is with teaching resources. There are number of books, but no time to read all the content one by one to decide. Well, we know that Murphy is the king of grammar. But people prefer learning grammar through conversation classes. They are scared of classic books. I have bought several books and none of them matches my needs. Oxford word skills-Basics. I was shocked at the content. How come one call it "basics"? Come on, no foreigner can start using it at a basics level. New English File or others. I mean none is what I am looking for. Too much mess. Too much content. And preparing PPT takes a lifetime. It requires a separate staff member to do it. How do you deal with it? Thanks in advance for your possible reply.
@etacude4 жыл бұрын
Hi, So far I haven't used those books but it's strange. Most modern books have pdfs that come with them or at the very least a website where you can sign in to use the material. We get assigned books and while I prefer some over the other, all of them come with audio files and ppts which make online classes easy. I would first check with my colleagues and the publishers whether they have digital versions of the book and if that doesn't work (which is really strange to me), I would find a book that does have that. Many teachers have asked me to recommend books and I'll look towards doing that in the future. I hope this helps. Kind regards, Eric

Would indeed be life saving if you could share names of those books that have ppts. Thank you very much.

I discovered that tabbed browsing in Chrome works great with Google Docs. The textbooks that I work with are also online and I don’t leave screen sharing at all during a class. Zoom’s educational platforms allows unlimited streaming and as a result I don’t have to end the class to restart it again, I run it for 3 hours. All my students come in on the same ID and we developed unique numbers which inform me which class they’re in, and keep them in the waiting room until it’s time for their class, and let them in. If a student in a current class has technical issues and has to come back into the class, that number also informs me of such. Accountability and self management are important life skills (I teach at an elementary school). Students are not reminded of when class begins. They should know this because they are given their timetables. They all have electronic calendars. We also hold parents responsible for their children’s learning. As a result, they’re more disciplined and focused when they enter the Zoom environment. I don’t even have to mute their mics any longer, and I also hold them accountable to mute their mics if someone is talking too loud in the background and disrupting the class. I agree with you on about the video off thing, but students’ are requested to turn on their videos briefly at the end of class to check on work or activities done, and are then allowed to log off (I guess you don’t have to do this with uni students). The funniest experiences personally, is when parents are also learning with their kids and playing the games too. It’s been a fun part of the remote learning journey. I hear a lot of sounds of astonishment from parents based on the lesson materials that I’ve prepared (I have an advertising background) and there is a high level of engagement. So parents’ have taken a real interest in their kids’ English learning for the very first time. As a result, I have more loquacious students on the days that they come to school. 😊

Great sharing! Thank you so much Eric :) My name is Kaew and Im an English tutor from Thailand. I would like to ask for ur suggestion about teaching conversation to university students. Most of Thai students cant speak since they focus more on the grammar. As an English teacher, Im not sure where to start or where I can get online resources to teach my students. (Normally each time I try to pick up interesting topic to talk to them or play game, but I dont have things like book or handout for them) Thank you a lot for ur kindness in advance.
@etacude3 жыл бұрын
MY best suggestion is to find a book to work from. Go to the book store and find a good ESL book to use. Every week you can use a lesson from the book and incorporate your own ideas. Make sure to continue focusing on speaking. Students need to get comfortable with explaining themselves so you have to get them to talk. Using interesting topics and placing them in groups to have conversations will help! Good luck!

Teacher Eric what happens in a situation whereby a student is not responsive??AGE been 9-12 you ask questions nor ask them to read they don't want 😔😔 how do I engage nor help?
@etacude2 жыл бұрын
Make it fun and simplify. Start with easy questions, model the answers, type out vocabulary first and make it on topics that are relevant or interesting to the student. Also, you should place expectation on your students to answer questions. If you scaffold, make it easy, give them vocabulary to help, there is no reason not to answer. If the student still doesn't answer, you'll have to lecture them on the importance of speaking in class.

Thanks, Eric for a great and entertaining presentation. How many Sean Connerys were there? I counted 10 or so.

Great video Eric! Quick question: How do you charge and get paid from students... do you use PayPal or some other application? Thank you! Nino Via
@etacude2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Paypal is the easiest but there are other methods such as Stripe or direct bank transfers.

Hi Eric, the English Now book seems great, do you know if they sell it in ebook or another that you may suggest. Thanks
@etacude4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure, Ale. I'll look around and let you know once I find out.

@@etacude That would be great, I have searched the web but nothing so well illustrated. I did my first real online class today with material I had on hand, I followed your suggestions and gained two more students 😃

Hello Dear Thank you for your effort I want to ask you how I could bring an online book ( material) 📙 to use in my English sessions ?
@etacude3 жыл бұрын
You mean show a ppt or pdf of your book? Most books have online material. Share it with screen share with your class.
