In this video, I show you how to easily use your Android Phone Or Tablet as a Screen for your Raspberry Pi 400 Raspberry Pi 4 Raspberry pi 3 or basically an HDMI enabled device from the Xbox to Nintendo Switch or even a Mini Computer.
This involves perching a cheap USB to HDMI capture card and a USB type C to Female USB cable but in the end, it works great and can come in really handy on the go!

That's what I was wondering. I have a couple old OLPC XO tablets that are pretty much useless for anything else. It would be nice if I could use the HDMI port as HDMI in, but as a dirt-cheap device, it is extremely unlikely to have 2-way capability. I had wanted to set up something like this to display my calendar on my work laptop (no, the laptop display plus two external monitors isn't enough)

Semi related info for Samsung users who don't know - Samsung introduced wireless Miracast support this year for most recent flagships and mid range phones and tablets. I think it works for most DeX enabled devices. And it's supposed to work both ways - as transmitter and receiver. When you get into the Smart View menu you can choose the mode. For some reason, I couldn't get my Tab S5e to pick my smartphone's signal, but I didn't insist much as it was only a test... prolly doing somethin wrong, but the option is there. Unfornately, for laptops and desktops, I think this is a Windows thing mostly. But it works pretty nicely with a generic Miracast dongle on TV... it's nice to be able to use TV wirelessly as a screen with a single dongle that works with my smartphone, tablet and laptop. xD And since I'm on Samsung devices, also DeX... only wish Samsung would keep working on it more. I get the latency and lag worries though.
@JayRevealer
@JayRevealer 2 жыл бұрын
When dex uses miracast, the latency is high since the packets route through your wifi. However connecting dex supported device to these TVs/Monitor, the experience is truly amazing, zero lag game play.

I’ve found you can do this with Windows 8+ laptop (and probably any windows device). Plug the pi, hdmi cables and video capture device together and into pc USB 3.0 port after turning on the pi (I used a pi4). Windows will (slowly) recognise the video capture device receiving the pi output as a web cam. Then you can just open the camera app then select “change camera” and your laptop screen displays the pi output. Having tried official usb camera connect apps, the simple windows built in camera app worked the best!

What is the battery impact on the Android device? The CPU on there is going to be running a core pretty hard, reading frames off the dongle over usb, and then submitting them to a graphics api. The GPU will also be lit up to composite the final frame.

And the phone is more powerful than the pi so why not just get a Bluetooth keyboard with a track pad, job done.

@@michaelwight9851 You have full admin access to an open Linux system with GPIO pins and an ecosystem of add-ons around making and tinkering on the Pi but not on your Android devices. Definitely use the Android device directly if it meets your needs though.

Got one of these cheap capture cards. Works great with the Pi 4B. Doesn't work at all with the Switch; video output stays black, no sound. It's too bad there aren't better apps for this. The one he uses seems to be one of the best, but even it lacks basic features like auto-fill the screen. Normally everything is pixel perfect with your device's display, even in "full screen mode", so if you have say a 2K display on your phone, you have to manually pinch to zoom and be verrry precise with your tweaking. ETAPrime also didn't mention that in order to NOT have an ad overlapping your video feed, you gotta pay $5.49 for the pro version of the app. Finally, latency is OK but not great. Probably in the realm of 200-300ms. There's a reason he isn't recommending this for games - only a classic turn-based RPG would be playable like this, and even then it'd be annoying IMO. Also, using a mouse or doing a lot of typing with this method would probably see the latency drive me nuts. Holding out hope that Genki ShadowCast will really bring a viable use case to the table with its lower latency. Otherwise this is really only good for consuming video, which... I mean, a tablet or phone can do that on its own!

This is great. I keep one of these cheap capture cards in my laptop bag all the time. I did not know there was an android app to receive this though. lol I’ve been running obs in Linux on my chromebook to get the signal from my Thinkpad but hey maybe I can just use an android app lol. I also use it to plug my laptop into itself. Making a very easy way to generate a ghost monitor for screen sharing a second desktop in zoom.

I didn't consider that this capture card could be used that way. Gonna have to look into this. I'm thinking that this should be possible with any Linux device as well. I actually already have one of those capture cards already, which I'm using for my DIY ambilight.
