You've gotta love those cheap cars! I got a '94 Corolla back in June. I thought it was going to need an engine, because it was only firing on two cylinders and BARELY ran. I was able to drive it around the parking lot, but that was it. The guy wanted $600 and I left. He called back later, saying "bring me $300 and it's yours". I told him I could be there with $250 cash. He sold it to me, and I tinkered with it for a few days. Come to find out, the spark on cylinders 2 and 3 was almost non-existent, and after I put some fresh wires (along with regular tune-up items such as the distributor cap, rotor, and spark plugs), it fired right up and has been running great! Bonus: the A/C works, and I've put 6,000 trouble-free miles on the car so far!

That generation of civics were tanks. They last forever.
@Rumblefan5 жыл бұрын
They were like tanks in terms of reliability and everything working, but the body doesn’t hold up over time, especially in snowy winter areas. They rust and dent too easily, and if it’s parked in a driveway instead of a garage, the paint fades and peels over time. Sure this stuff can happen to any car, but EVERY single one of these civics I see, including the one I owned had all those body issues.
@Mike-nf6nf4 жыл бұрын
@@Rumblefan I have the rust issues on my black 1998 Honda LX but none of the paint has peeled. They must have used a different coating or something to protect it. Someone down the street has a silver one like mine with no peeling and all the other black 1998's I see in town haven't had the peeling either. However, I've seen lots of Civics with peeling paint (or is it the coating?)
@Rumblefan4 жыл бұрын

Yeah, i don't know what's with Honda dealers (with re-manufacturers in particular) but even in Europe they fuck us over with stuff like that. I cater to a very small pool of cars out of which 5 are Hondas. Guess which of that pool is always in for steering issues and gear box (occasionally, now no more since i send them to a specialized gear box refitter). Last one, a 00s vintage, i just gave up and bought a kit off eBay, i'm hoping i did a good enough job and that i won't see that car any time soon, even to a friend, explaining that the dealers/and their workers are assholes, gets old.

I think the hassle would be chasing them, but certainly not fixing them. Taken aside as groups (and remember, a good series of videos) each job is relatively easy (except that main seal, that would probably be big, if it's the one weeping, tho there are some quick patches that i've heard about that you can "fix" these issues in a bind with).

The reason why people like Civic (imo) is because there simple and easy cars to fix. You can swap the engine and trans in about two hours if you kind of know what you're doing. Hell, I'm almost certain in the time he took to make the video he could have fixed the issues twice over lol.

Yeah they aren't exactly hard but you'll spend quite a bit of time. And at the end you'll still have an old 99 Civic. I'd rather spend that kind of time effort and money on something else. Great cars and all but it would just be a beater for me.

It's worth saying that on a lot of modern cars that have internal boot/trunk releases, or remote operation, the external lock on the boot/trunk rarely or never gets used so they can gum up with junk and stick or seize. If you clean the lock barrel out thoroughly and re-lubricate it, preferably with a dry graphite lubricant, you might well find it works fine. I had exactly the same with my Focus when I bought it and after I sorted the barrel it was fine. Of course, it's an old car and it does rather look like someone had a bit of a problem with reversing into things so it could well be that the boot/trunk lid has been replaced with a salvaged item and they didn't change the lock barrel over when they did the job...

It's odd how when you get to a point where you can buy cars like these on an impulse you have no time to play with them (well most people) because life gets in the way or you just do not have the room to store them. It would be fun to do a mild restoration and sell it on to at least break even. With just polishing the headlights, putting on a hubcap, and fixing that damage on the right rear corner it would look very presentable. Maybe $50-100 in parts and supplies plus 60-90 minutes of time would do it. Then degrease the engine compartment. I never owned a Civic but just loved the simplicity of them. At a new car show in the early 90s I still remember seeing a base Civic with the hood open and being impressed by how they engineered it to stay cool with such a small radiator.

Possible that the extra key might be a 'valet' key. My 99 Accord had a gray key, which was separate from the black keys, and did not open either the glove box or the trunk. My Aunt's 99 Civic EX, also has this smaller black key that Eric has and I'm guessing it's a valet key. Keeps the Valet personnel from snooping beyond the cabin and the cabin only. There is also another key lock near the trunk latch in the driver's seat that should allow the trunk to lock.

Wow, brings back memories of the 6th gen Civics we've owned. Very easy car to work on. Once put a new clutch in a 97 LX and it was in an accident just a couple months later that totaled the vehicle. Wreck of the old 97, we called it. Replaced it with a 98 DX.

Back when we had kids,driving cars like that was considered normal. I loved the Honda's best. Plenty of high miles but drove better than anything out there. I always said if I could get a year out of a $500 car,I got my moneys worth. I was the brake changing king too. Everyone I knew came to me for brake jobs. Miss those days.

I have had 4 civics of this gen, 2 of which were 300 dollar civics that rusted out. I finally ended up with a 2000 civic with 78,000 on it that I bought off of a senior. ill be keeping it forever I hope. You got a good car. Keep it :D

I got a Honda Civic dx 1999, clean title, 160,000 miles on an auction for $700 and spent $25 to get it fix, now is 170,000 miles no problem a lot of new parts..

I think only a mechanic would be really comfortable buying such a car because he has the tools and know how and he can fix any problems with it without worrying too much.

Hahaha thats funny!!! i just picked up a 1998 civic ex yesterday too! its even the same green! I got it for $400..Nice and clean inside,no rust. All it needed was a battery and distributor. Got both for $50 each._so $500 total. Stuck in a distrubitor,a battery. Fired right up after sitting for 8 months and drove it home with no issue... I love easy craigslist flippers

Some Civics had a valet key that would only work in the door and the ignition. It did not work on the trunk or the trunk release lock in the passenger compartment. I don't remember what year they started doing that.

I've got a 2000 UK version of the Civic (1.4i Sport in dark green) , love it despite it's two minor issues, one the ABS pump needs replacing but still stops on a dime, the second more annoying problem is my driver's side door. it won't open from the outside and waiting to get a replacement very soon...

If anything like a Toyota, there is a Valet key that only opens the doors and turns the ignition, test on the glove box if it has a keyhole, if it fails to work in that, it's a Valet key. The purpose being you could lock trunk and glove box with a master key and give parking attendant Valet key and they cant get into those.

Hey Eric, just thought I'd drop a suggestion. I always get my windshields replaced at an outfit called Auto Glass Now. I just looked them up, they have a shop on Colrain Ave down there in your area. The one up here in Dayton has always done me right. A real professional job, no leaks, and they even clean up after themselves so you'd never know they were there. Best part is it's never cost me more than $130,. You can't beat the price anywhere I've found so far.

ETCG1 cool beans! Alwayd good to have a friend in the business. Just thought I'd share. The Auto Glass Now up here in Dayton has always been a great experience for me. I've had three windshields replaced in the last couple years. Each time I went there, walked next door to Tim Hortons, and buy the time I was finished gorging on coffee and doughnuts, the car was sitting out front ready to go. The price is always a couple hundred less than what the other nationally known chains quote.

I just bought two Early to mid 90's Honda's from work for $600 for both. One ( Manual Trans Civic) needs a Cylinder Head, Water pump and Timing Belt and the other ( Del Sol ) needs an Auto Trans.
