ETCG Meetup 2016: Chevy Doorlocks with Eric O.

Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics

Күн бұрын

What better way to relax after the ETCG 2016 meetup than to do some live diagnostics at the campground?
Mike of the Disgruntled Mechanic channel ( / @thedisgruntledmechanic ) was having some door lock issues on his 2002 Chevy 2500HD...
Eric O. of South Main Auto ( / @southmainauto ) does some live troubleshooting and storytelling.
ScannerDanner, aka Paul ( / scannerdanner ) also throws in some pro diag tips.
Behind the scenes, the "boss" looks on with amusement as his flat rate techs tackle what seems like a simple door lock actuator issue...
Enjoy!

Great stuff! It's like a "greatest hits" album...all the good stuff all in one place! I'm not surprised Eric O jumps right in and goes to town on it. It really is great to see all of you together in one place and tackle a fun little issue like that. Ivan, keep up the good work...I've watched all your vids and really like your diagnostic thinking. I've learned a ton from you.

When you used the Tech-2 and commanded the body module and the lock worked in one direction, this told you the wiring is intact and you should have picked up on that, since it is only a 2 wire actuator setup, an advanced tech would have suspected either a switch or relay problem right off the bat, since those items control the direction of electrical flow. No need to remove door panels. A 10 minute job turned into hours of diagnostic time. Good job fellas.

Relays are notorious for going faulty. To test a relay, put 6v across the contacts with 1 amp flowing and measure the voltage drop. Should be about 0.3v depending on the resistance of the contacts.Pulled 5 relays from a faulty microwave combi and all badly pitted.Did a job on the contacts with the help of 400 grit, wet and dry sandpaper and all's well again.Good diagnosis video with Erico verifying his scope and yourself showing us the circuit diagram which is very important for the viewers. The scanner was very reflective and difficult to discern the data.Perhaps for future videos, an umbrella of sorts could be used to block out the glare of the sun that is used when filming.

You know I realize sometimes that some jobs take longer than others and we're always worried about how long were taking, I know I do, but one thing I always think about is if it does take longer to find and fix at least you know it was fixed right and it won't be coming back and therefore you won't be spending more time on the job. Sometimes being slower is more effective. Considering poor Eric had the heat on him I thought he did a great job.

I have to agree some people don't even put the plastic insulation water barrier back on the door over the pwr window motor wiring and pwr door lock solenoid and the window regulators lol, but I got ahold of a 88 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS no aero coupe back window... I pulled the door panel off because nothing on either door worked and under the Dr side the plastic was gone instead was completely covered in black vinyl electrical tape lol,, and I pulled that off and they actually took the time to make a frame around it out of cardboard and the plastic had a tore out hole bigger than the inside door handle release because they yanked the plastic barrier off and it was in the trunk folded lol.some people and inside the door was soaked the window motor was in water and the regulator tracks were rusted and upon further examination the motor and pwr door lock solenoid were unplugged in both doors and the passenger side still had the plastic barrier and had some dampness in the door but nothing like the Dr side door and I spent an hour with crc brake kleen red can and scotch Brite pad cleaning the regulator and track back up and plugged in the wiring and put both sides back together and then patched the in the plastic barrier with black duck brand duct tape and cut the small slit for the inside door handle and tried it and nothing I then found out the pwr accessory circuit breaker relay was no longer silver the top was blueish colored and the pwr window,pdl, and the heater courtesy and radio fuse were visibly smoked without even pulling the fuses out.. I replaced those and went to the junkyard and got a bunch of the 80's gm cars and square body trucks pwr accessory circuit breaker relays, and wahla power windows and door locks and heater fan switch and blower motor function it was ran straight to ignition circuit in the fuse block and straight up to the positive battery cable.., and I got rid of that and it's other problems before that I was thinking it had a shorting out steering column no dash function at all and no dash or dome, courtesy lights check and those fuses are missing?? Who was working on this damn thing I wouldn't let him tune my bicycle.. and the power window motor harness connector plug and the pwr lock solenoid connector plugs laying down in the Dr side door in the water shorted out the pwr accessory circuit breaker relay and blew the wipers pwr window and dl and heater blower motor fuses

I think this was the wrong approach. Initially the passinger door was unlocking when comanded to lock and locking when comanded to unlock. Then we find out that the actuator on the passenger door was replaced, but some component was taken off the old unit to put on the new one. The simplest explanation is the polarity got reversed. I would have isolated the passenger actuator and found what wire needed to be energized to make the door lock, and which wire made the door unlock. Hook up the appropriate wires . Then the mystery is solved, and no scan tools needed.

so replaced main power fuse and everything starts working. my guess is that the root problem may be a poor connection thru the fuse box causing the relays to work with low voltage pulling high amps for the circuit thus causing the relays to fail. just my 2 cents

Playing armchair mechanic: I wonder if it would have been easier/quicker to discover this bad ground by doing voltage drop testing (with or without a LoadPro) instead of going to the old (un)faithful test light. The voltage drop on the ground side should have been pretty quick to diagnose with a couple voltage measurements. More then .5V drop on a 12 volt circuit is excessive resistance. There's your problem lady... :-)
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 8 жыл бұрын
You missed one key word: LOADED voltage drop testing! Test light was faithful as always...just took a bit of brainwork to interpret the results :)
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, its kind of understood that voltage drop testing is done on a loaded circuit. Can't have voltage drop without current flow. So just don't unplug anything before you start testing, and go from there. My point is that the brainwork could likely have been reduced using voltage (drop) testing. A couple voltage measurements would have told you if it was an open, short or excessive resistance pretty quickly. Just sayin'...

At 20 minutes in, the scope on a rope and a DMM has fooled me with a fuse check once. The car once had an aftermarket "fuse tap" , the kind that wrap around the fuse blade. This was likely performed to add a true keyed, not BCM controlled, ACC or IGN source for aftermarket stereos and accessories. The car was sold and the OEM equipment was properly installed and everything worked, for a while at least. One would assume the fuse is fine with a probe test, why no power down the line to the load..? The fuse tap was removed with the stereo and the fuse was put back in place. It was the powered side of the fuse block that had a firm grasp on the fuse blade. A test lite says ITs GOOD! The load side was spread out from the fuse tap, which is a shitty device made to speed up install production and make it easy.... easy to fuck shit up! The load side didn't have a grasp on the fuse blade at all. The factory stereo gets the ACC Power from Class 2 Data, no true ACC source in the harness.. see? I love having days like that - the ones that make you re-think the simple stuff.
