The Eternal Fort (also known as Bowser in the Eternal Fort) was located within the 4th floor. It would be unlocked after beating Bowser in the Sky with 120 stars. Additionally, there were now 44 extra stars to collect, raising the total number of stars to 164; this included 7 stars for each of the 6 unlocked courses in the 4th floor, and 1 star in the secret Wing Mario Over the Stars course (this was to be entered by jumping into the starry painting at the 2nd floor, and it (predictably) took place in a starry night sky; this course, as well as the previously mentioned 6 new courses, were notably tough compared to the previous courses). Within the 4th floor also lied Princess Peach's bedroom, which was where the other secret star was located. It was inside a Yellow ! Box, and next to it was a signpost that read: "Mario, if you are reading this, please take this Power Star I've kept hidden away from Bowser. Recover the remaining stars and defeat Bowser for good so we can finally be free from the castle walls! You can do it, Mario, we believe in you!" As for the Eternal Fort, it was to be entered via a warp pipe at the end of the 4th floor. When the player entered the warp pipe, the AI decided whether or not the player was worthy enough to take the challenge by a number of factors; one of which, of course, included whether or not the player had all 164 stars. If the AI deemed the player unworthy, they would be taken to a black screen with text that read: "YOU ARE NOT WORTHY," and the game would crash. Players who were worthy of entering the course noted that it was extremely difficult and confusing to navigate through, as the course had precise jumps, cannons that were difficult to precisely aim, enemies that were hard to dodge, and convoluted maze-like halls. When the player finally enters the pipe at the end of the course to fight Bowser, he would greet them with: "Grr, how on Earth were you able to get through my fort?! Don't you ever give up??? And... I see you've found all 164 Power Stars... but that doesn't matter! Your Star Power is still useless against me! I'm not holding back this time, Mario... I'll fry you like an egg, and I'll get rid of you once and for all! You'll never see the Princess or your friends ever again! Bwa ha ha!!" This final Bowser fight was also very difficult to beat, as Bowser would have teleported much more frequently than he did in the Fire Sea fight, created fast shockwaves that required precise jumps to avoid, and even had a new attack which involved throwing many hammers at Mario much like in the original Super Mario Bros. game. If the player lost the fight, regardless of how many lives they had, it would've triggered the secret "bad ending," which showed an image of Mario trapped in a painting, with the words "YOU ARE NOT WORTHY" in place of "The End." Viewing the ending would crash the game, and for unknown reasons, caused a glitch that would delete the save file. No matter what they did, the developers weren't able to patch it. For these reasons, the Eternal Fort and the 4th floor were scrapped from the final game.

@@PlanetBobstar There is actually a version of the Eternal Fort in the Celeste beta. Since the game is linear, everyone will encounter it at some point. You have to have 250 strawberries at the minimum, basic knowledge of the hyper dash, and a few other factors only the personalization AI knows. If you fail any of those criteria, you are deemed not worthy and the game crashes. Trust me, I have encountered it myself. Once you are deemed worthy, the rest of the rooms are really chaotic, as there are all sorts of obstacles, including 3 Badelines, the Mr. Oshiro boss, super intense wind, sandwich lava and ice, randomized spawn points, and so on. There are actually 2 branching paths in the middle, but they are subtle so you have to be careful which one you pick. If you pick the wrong path, then you are deemed unworthy when you try to collect the fake crystal heart and the game crashes again. If you pick the right path and you don't die once during the final checkpoint of the path, then you are awarded with the good ending. If you die even once during the final checkpoint, then you are awarded the bad ending and the game crashes. When the game opens up again, the save file is deleted and you have to try again.

I remember the last part of the level actually! Just like every other bowser level, at the end there’s a pipe that takes you to him. But unlike the previous ones, there’s no path to it. The pipe is on a lone tower. So in the last section of Eternal fort you have to find a wing cap to fly there. Once you do, you have to dodge a bunch of bullet bills while flying there. Once you land there, you go in the pipe and fight bowser one more time. I can continue if you guys want.

When I first defeated BITS with the 121 stars, I was treated to a completely different cutscene. In there, when Mario landed on the Castle Grounds, the big star that contained Peach shattered into all of its 120 little shards, and they all flew away. Mario had angry eyes on his otherwise barely-textured N64 face we all know. This is when I remember seeing a bunch of Koopas and Lakitus surrounding the castle, chanting an incantation: "TOWERS WILL COLLAPSE STARS SHALL FALL LEVELS WILL BREAK RISE, ETERNAL FORT!" And then, a big castle of black and red rose from the ground, destroying Peach's castle in its wake. Bowser's laugh echoed, and a text box appeared: "Well played, Mario. But as you have heard so many times before, your princess is in another castle. The Mushroom Kingdom now belongs to me, and me alone! Just try and take it from me if you dare. Bwahahaha!" And this is how I learned that Super Mario 64 was supposed to have a New Game+ option.

I was deemed worthy to enter this stage, and if it wasn’t already hard enough to be deemed worthy, then this does it. Because I tell you, this shit is hard. There’s difficult to dodge enemy placement, hard to aim cannons, and a confusing overall layout. The Bowser fight is even worse, you can’t die once, he teleports all over, his attacks are faster and dick piercingly hard to avoid, and worst of all, there are hammers being thrown directly at you. so actually the eternal fort is just one of a series of evil buildings made by this sick personalization ai and this already mysterious fort is the cover up for the rest of em. There is around 11. i know about eternal fort and just discovered perfect mansion. i dont have much time left since the higher ups dont want you to know this they want to silence me when i was just about to find out the truth. these levels are all tests of skill but the others are more extreme than eternal fort and i saw the perfect mansion once when i was a kid and beat eternal fort somehow. the ai had to destroy the game since it was worried i would beat the perfect mansion and learn the truth about everything but i remember the star being colored black and right before i could get it is when the game destroyed itself
