@@thiagocarvalho8630 I know. And I’ve started to worry that it’s a trend, because if you think about it, Captain Marvel didn’t have a personality either. It’s not like Marvel can’t write interesting and great women-Peggy, Natasha, Wanda, Nebula, Gamora, Mantis, even Maria-they just maybe struggle with writing a good girl MAIN? (I never managed to see Black Widow, even though I want to, but I don’t have the highest hopes). I personally felt like I knew more about Thena from the little she said, Ajak, and Makkari, who barely was in it. And Sprite, of course. Sersi was just a beautiful statue that the rest of the movie revolved around. I actually liked the movie more than most, but since Ikaris did NOTHING for me, I hope to god they give Sersi some kind of identity and flesh in the next one.

I'm honestly surprised that Disney even thought it'd be a good idea to introduce 10 characters and their individual storylines in ONE 2 hour film especially considering how hard they've been pushing Disney+ Marvel tv shows. Yeah, but Ikaris also betrayed Sersi. That would not have made as much sense if they had the same kind of chemistry. Druig was as patient with and committed to humanity as he was to Makkari. Ikaris left to protect himself and the Celestial mission. I honestly didn't know for sure if he would choose her or humanity at the last moment and neither did he. It was only when he was pressed to the limit that he had to admit how hollow his beliefs were and flew away because there was nothing left for him. He walked away from her 500 years ago and she really did move on.

I said this in a different video, so if you've seen my comment there apologies, but: People keep comparing these two relationships but they were intentionally different. Ikaris/Sersi have this transcendent love, but it's... kinda broken. Because Ikaris has kept himself closed off from Sersi for so long, knowing the truth of their situation. He is a soldier, always has been; he keeps his feelings close to him. Everything's not all right between them, they are (excuse the pun) eternally at odds. In every life, on every planet, they will be - that's why Ikaris well, does what he does. There's a sense of emptiness and tragedy there. Druig/Makkari are different. They have this youthful energy, they don't have this crisis between them. Druig as a character is supposed to come as a surprise, you see he has a big heart under there, despite appearances. You root for them because the characters aren't having this wedge between them (Though it helps the actors do have insane chemistry). A lot of the differences in the pairings and the reception thereof comes down to the fact Ikaris and Druig are foils to each other, and their character arcs subvert expectations. Idk just my opinion lol I just feel the two pairings served very different purposes and were executed well along with that vision, which makes audience reception unsurprising.
@fusiondog77

@@caitlinb35 100%. I feel like people are projecting these love story/'family' tropes onto the story were it doesn't belong and not getting that they are SUPPOSED TO think the relationships are strained. If people thought none of the relationships work that would have been a problem, but it seems to me that the relationships that worked were supposed to and the ones that felt broken were supposed to and everyone's comments fall in line with the expected pattern, whether they realize it or not.

11:16 EXCUSE ME. Druig had one of the most emotional stories of the eternals because he literally had the power to stop conflict and he wasn't allowed to because it would mess with humans free will, the amount of humanity and free will he has not to use his power across the entire planet is emphized through the actors performance, then by the end of the movie he the eternal to control the unimind pitches in to save the planet; opinions are opinions but you did ask, so...Druig had a story.

But the entire point of his power is that it’s useless because he’s not supposed to use it. So the only reason he has that power is for a plot device. i think his potential was wasted and instead he was mostly used for witty jokes and asides (like the whole makkari interactions are fun, but they show only one facet of him in short scenes, not the whole picture). We never explore the moral complexities of his power (because controlling people's actions through their minds implies removing their free will, even if it's used for "the greater good"), his reasoning (does he feel righteous, resigned, limited in any away?), his actual grievances with the other eternals, etc. We saw him leave the rest while mind controlling basically two armies, and later still controlling an entire village (with/without their consent? we dont know) but there's still a lot missing there: he could have gone around the world "righting wrongs" for all we know. I'd have love to see more of him explored just as well as all the others... but here we are lol

I absolutely agree with you. I love the idea of the Eternals. Though the execution could've been a lot better, it feels like something a bit different and refreshing compared to other marvel movies. I'd really like to get to know the characters better, because I feel I could get attached to them. Their stories, motivations, personalities... are different enough and I hope they get to be fleshed out. For one, I'd love to explore the consequences of Thena's memories not being erased, and, on top of that, living with the trauma of Gilgamesh's death (both for her and for the group as a whole). And of course, I can't wait to see more of Makkari and Druig. It's incredble that they had so much chemistry in like... 2 or 3 scenes??? I would've liked that Kro hadn't appeared in the final battle and had been left as a potential villain for another film, but, honestly, it wouldn't be surprising if he had survived as he took Ajak's healing powers and resurrecting characters is something Marvel seems to enjoy.

The strangest part of the movie to me is that even though its so long and there's so much exposition, a lot of it is pointless. Like they say the same thing over and over again, we have a scene of eternals discovering their true purpose and being mildly annoyed about it like 5 times. Even that opening title crawl is useless because all the information that is told to us in that title crawl, is told again in the scene directly after it. I feel if it took a lot of this repition and spent that developing the characters in different ways, it would've been a lot better. Side note I think another thing that would greatly improve the movie is if it was in chronological order, switching back and forth between past and present doesn't serve any purpose whatsoever besides giving us the Icarus killed the leader twist near the end. But I feel like if we knew Icarus was evil the whole time, that would build up the suspense in the scenes that he's in, it would've also made the leader's death more impactful because we don't really get scenes of her until after she's dead.

Coming to the movie, I feel like it fell flat because the characters were still very new to us but we were forced to care about them. Like Avengers was quite a basic superhero movie, it did not have some super awesome never seen before plot or something, but we loved it because we were attached to the characters. Hell, I was so attached to Tony that MCU ended for me after Endgame. And I did not watch anything after that but after being forced to watch No Way Home, I was so compelled that I binge-watched WandaVision, Loki, Black Widow, Falcon, and the Winter Soldier and Eternals all in 3 days. All because Spiderman is a well-fleshed-out character, and even if he was put through stuff I don't agree with, it brought me back to things I loved about Marvel. But Eternals made me feel so underwhelmed like something was wrong and I kept telling myself that it was my own high expectations that are making me feel this way. But after seeing your analysis, I feel like it does make more sense in being underwhelmed. This was very much Disney's brand of larger-than-life fairytale family is important bullshit than the kind of stuff Marvel usually puts out. They could've made Sersi the best kind of female protagonist who is feminine and delicate while being badass and powerful and frankly, I absolutely hate that lost potential. Really hope they redeem it somehow, tho it is very difficult to see how they would do it.

Yep. I still don't know why Ajak chose her. The only reason I remember being given is "She loved humans more than anyone else" but in that case, the winners are clearly either Druig for wanting to end world conflicts so badly to the point of depression, or Phastos for wanting to help them evolve so much. He actually cried when he saw the World Wars, despite being a synthetic creature. Heck, even Kingo's a contender for actually loving having fun with humans, making a living out of singing & dancing for centuries instead of hiding away, lol. Sersi has nothing going for her... I think they just wanted a female protagonist. If I had to choose, the protagonist would either be my boy Druig (1: Bc I've never seen an MCU main character with his dreary, almost emo personality & it'd be interesting. 2: The dilemma of free will would be brought to the forefront and 3: Makkari and him would have more screen time, making an interesting main couple for MCU standards) or Thena (bc it'd actually make sense for her to be chosen, assuming Ajak knows she's the only other Eternal who remembers everything. Then the film would become a mystery/thriller surrounding someone with mental illness who has a past life, which is also interesting by MCU standards). Sorry for the rant 😅

My main problem with Sersi is that she is supposed to be the new leader but there's not a single moment in the movie were they show us why she has to be the leader or why is she gaining this role, she never takes the leading role, never gives orders, never plans anything, doesn't have the qualities to be a leader. In fact she is mostly useless until the very end of the movie. For the majority of the movie Ajack is shown as the leader due to the extensive flashbacks and in the movie it self the characters just seen to follow Ikarus than any other person until the revelation. I'm ok with a character being the leader not for it's physical strength but for it's emotional union and companion, they show us this can work with Ajack who has not a single ofensive power and it's a healer but you can feel her as the leader for her motherly nature and the emotional impact she has in the others, but Sersi is never shown to be very influential in the group or motherly or the hearth, her only quality is that she likes humans (for a reason that is never shown). If anything they could have kept Sersi as the choosen one and make Druig the leader, Druig was the first one who expressed the feelings that would end up being the new motives of the Eternals and has more influence in the other characters than Sersi.

Just imagine how good this Disney+ series would've been if we'd had Thena remember the truth about the Celestials and we would've actually got that family feel. @@beesknees5628 the myth of icarus is centred around arrogance and being overly ambitious. that mixed with the themes of family in this movie made it make a lot of sense to me. He was too ambitious in his power and in the end he realized that his ambition made him lose the one thing that actually mattered (his family). it wasn't necessarily about Sersi herself but rather her representing his most pure form of love for this family. He had made too many regrets and when he realized he couldn't turn back he decided to give up. And his reason for coming to check on Seresi was because he was “worried about her after the earthquake and was checking on her”. While I do think the movie had too many plots going on, as a whole, I enjoyed what marvel tried to do with this film. And I really enjoyed the character dynamics and wish we saw more of that. Like the small moments between Thena and Gilgamesh and Makkari and Druig were so honest and beautiful. Ajak’s relationship with everyone was so loving and I wished we saw more of those moments instead of the deviant angle. Having the movie focus more on the team and their relationships while also grappling with the all the knowledge Sersi uncovered would’ve been so compelling. But whatever, I can wait to see Thena, Makkari, and Druig go on space adventures with Harry. And, as always, f*ck Sprite.

I actually loved this movie but I completely agree with everything you said except the part about the characters. For an ensemble cast, I feel like they still managed to flesh them out with what they could. There are things about characters that are simple but give you an image of what they are. Gilgamesh is one of the strongest warriors in history but he likes to cook and he's a big softie which is what led him to dedicate a life to Thena. Sersi is passive, yes, but I feel like it made sense for her character, even the other Eternals looked down on her and questioned why she was chosen instead of Ikaris. There were a lot of scenes where you could see her be insecure with herself and I think that was pretty interesting to have her arc end with her feeling secure enough to not try to fight Ikaris because she knew he couldn't hurt her. There were a lot of good ideas thrown into this mess of a movie and honestly, I prefer that over a movie that did everything right only because it didn't try to be something more. TL;DR I still feel like I know more about all of the Eternals than I do about Zendaya's character in Spiderman

I have to agree, your take can also be applied to Druig. He is made explicitly clear to be powerful enough to stop human war with his powers and was even going to be used to stop the celestial. But he couldn’t because it would rob humans of free will. It causes a lot of internal conflict for him - enough that he’s the first to speak out against Ajak and question their purpose. I absolutely loved that. For a character that showed minimal facial expressions and wasn’t even the main focus he was still so emotional, yet distant, and cheeky, yet serious enough to stand for what he believes in. The fact that I got all that from him says a lot. I just wished there was more to flesh him out. I also wish I knew more about Makarri because her powers are so badass I really like her!!

Even still they gave us little hints of who he is, a confrontational, flirty, loner, who’s kinda hypocritical. And his relationship with makkari makes sense cause she kind of a loner too. Honestly, Those two have more chemistry than sersi and ikaris. I don’t think I could possibly describe any of the other-more prominent-characters so well. This is all I got: Thena - “crazy” Ajak - leader Sersi - loves humans Ikaris - rule follower? Gilgamesh - strong? Kingo - jokester/actor (wow look 2) Sprite - adult child Phastos - engineering/father. makkari - deaf/loner

He woke up the last 15-20 minutes. Afterwards, he said, "What did I miss?". I said, "You saw the beginning through the first flashbacks, them on their ship, and talking about Arishem?" He said yes. I said, did you see the final battle with the mutant deviant & the giant thing coming up through the earth?". He said, "Yes.". I wish Eternals was a tv show with one story that could have ended with this battle with the deviants and teased the Celestial storyline rather than focusing on it in this movie. I think it could have been better if each episode focused on a different character, that way they could incorporate these flashbacks, but also make each of them feel like actual active characters, because coming out of the movie, I didn’t care about any characters, but an episode per character i feel could actually help them all make more sense as individual characters, rather than one part of a whole.

And coming into it, I wasn't expecting much, so maybe that’s why I didn't get the critics when they’ve said that the movie was “bad.” I actually quite enjoyed it, sure it didn't build much to the world we already knew and wasn’t nearly necessarily driven in a specific plot, but I got a kick out of it. I wouldn’t say it's the best MCU film but it was great generally, personally I’d have it in my top 10 or 5 possibly if they would’ve fleshed out the character more. His blind faith created the entire action of the last act, how fun would it be only see them become unimind and Sersi freezing Tiamut? The best you can say about the Eternals is that it’s visually stunning. The characters, pacing, and - primarily - the writing, were surprisingly un-marvel-like. It didn’t stand as an origin story untethered from the MCU continuity, and yet it’s function as a key - as yet unexplored - aspect of that continuity was also sketchy and lazily rendered. How could something like Thanos have escaped the interest of beings like the Eternals? They literally fell apart because of Hiroshima! There are a thousand better ways to frame just that one tiny thread. I feel like any coherence between the MCU thus far and Eternals evaporates under examination. That’s just lazy.

@@legzdiamond2356 I can see the general care for humanity aspect, but also since Sersi had no idea how powerful she was at the time, the only one with enough power to make a difference, who could have made it to Wakanda in time (the Battle of Wakanda was only a couple hours with no warning and the enemy LITERALLY falling out of the sky), was Ikaris. And he was never as close to humanity and had spent 500 years resolving himself to accepting the extinction of humanity as an inevitably. It is doubtful he would come even if he heard about it, which he probably wouldn't have since the rest of of world doesn't have news outlets in Wakanda. He would even known that halving the population would actually STOP the extinction of humanity from the Celestial egg, since it wouldn't have enough energy to hatch. If he knew the goal of Thanos, and primarily cared about humanity, he would have actually HELPED Thanos. If he had been aware of the fight he might have tried to stop Thanos specifically because he DID NOT care about humanity more than the Celestial seeds at the time. Though in the end I think there is VERY little chance any of them could have had foreknowledge of the attack in time to make an intervention, so it is a moot point.

I feel like the MCU has lost track of what made it incredible in the beginning, which is making character-led movies that really focus on the complexities of a character behind their superhero persona, backed up with absolutely PHENOMENAL casting for the character they want to explore. We didn't care about the Avengers because they were powerful and cool, we cared about them because they felt like real people (whether you loved or hated them). The plot was often generic, even quite weak, but if they could do justice to the character(s) they could still be great movies. Guardians of the Galaxy managed to achieve this for a freaking sentient raccoon and tree. I feel like The Eternals went for plot and theme over characters, but because of the number of characters the theme element was weak. I have hope for improvements though because with a few exceptions, I think the characters are incredibly interesting...though unfortunately I think Ikarus was miscast.

I feel the exact opposite. The Avengers movies always felt empty and shallow in terms of the characters and their interactions and relationships but the plot was entertaining. They never felt human to me. It always felt like the plot and action were more important and the character development was an afterthought. I feel that they never took enough time to focus on a characters motivation and feelings and thoughts but rather; go back on time, get and infinity stone, character moment that was pretty basic, go to the present, get tricked and fight. Even in the beginning of Endgame Tonys relationship with his family never felt real but like actors were pretending to be a family. They never explored deep ideas and topics when together. It was always just ,” I love you. *Crying* I hate you. *Hugging* He’s dead!! *Crying* Not like how a real family would interact with bickering and jokes and annoying one another and. It was always just love most of the time and a bear perfect family that got on along perfectly. It was kind of annoying actually. The Eternals felt like it’s plot in the begging was interesting with deviants but then became a bit bloated with the emergence and the minor subplots but then pulled itself together (mainly by focusing on the emergence). The characters however were MARVELous. The seemed like sibling with Ajack and Phastos being the parents and Makkari the cool track star Aunt. Their relationships had flaws with jealousy and love triangles and annoyance. They were so unsure how they felt at times and everyone had a very complex relationship with everyone else and those relationships changed. Take Sprite and Ikaris. It felt like they were just normal friends and that Sprite looked up to Ikaris but as time went on their relationship become a brother sister relationship then a one sided romance. It developed and changed ,rather negatively I might add, but that what was so beautiful. Nothing in life is as perfect and prim as it felt with the Avengers. Even if characters never liked one another it just stayed like that no resolution (apart from fighting) no talking no deep conversations…nothing. Or those scenes were few and far between which I won’t fault them for. When the Avengers defeated Thanos I was happy but for the world being saved and seeing Thanos lose. When (Spoiler) Thena killed King Kro I was happy not only because the world is safe from deviants but because Thena’s arch ended and she managed to avenge Gilgamesh. I just feel like these phases in Marvels films are made for different people.

Overall, I think it was ok, meh. I wanted more, left blue-balled. I wish, that: 1. We had more Angelina Jolie - I feel that she was on screen for maybe 10 minutes, but with so little portrayal of her character she just punches it through her performance 2. We had one clear villain. Why not have the movie be just about deviants? Let Kor(?) be the one to, I don't know, capture Thena and reveal to her the true purpose of Eternals. 3. Split this into separate movies. One - a clear introduction, we spend a bit more time with the characters, maybe we don't meet the whole squad in the first movie. Develop the characters as people who we as audience can know and care about. Second movie - the eternal civil war, let it be about the internal conflict, now we have the plot to stop the birth of the celestial and how it divides the group. We know them more, so now we can actually care what happens. And next movies can be about fighting celestials, or finding more eternals, or coming back to see who John Snow really is. 4. Thena and Gilgamesh had a better quasi romantic subplot, than Sersi and Ikarus. Don't force romance when there's no chemistry. 5. Again, Angelina really knew what to do to stand out. 6. The saddest thing, the most entertaining and amusing moment, was the Harry Styles reveal.... Shame, really. It is not a completely bad movie, but given who worked on it in terms of the director or cast, these are really talented people; and there are moments were the movie gets good (only for a brief period). Plus the visuals are amazing (and kind of Dune-like - that's a good movie, with a small plot that establishes bigger future movies). When we see them again, I hope Marvel learns from mistakes, that they made here and delivers a movie that this story and characters deserve.

Nobody seems to get that Ikaris was NOT SUPPOSED to have good chemistry with ANYBODY. Sersi was WITH Dane. She was OVER Ikaris. Which is why when Ikaris lost his faith int the Celestials he was so empty and adrift he chose to fly into the sun. He didn't realize he loved her and then try to stay to win her, he just realized the Celestials weren't worth killing her over. He didn't have her, the Celestials or anything at all at the end. Maybe there is a lesson there, but either way it feels pretty intentional to me.

@@blehh010 I feel like there were just enough breadcrumbs in place, that when they revealed he was told the secret it made sense that he had killed Ajak. He had the strongest connection to her, maybe cause of her maternal role to the team. Either way it seemed to be reciprocated as she chose him to lead at first. So I definitely felt his betrayal of her more than anyone else. I think the actor portrayed some real anguish over that, but then with that done, the rest of the betrayal was proforma. He had passed his emotional hurdle and committed himself to the distraction plan. It was only when pressed to the limit that he realized that even if it was over, at one point what he felt for her was a real thing and all he knew of the Celestials was lies. His heartbrokenes, to me, was more about the death of his faith in the Celestials than anything else. He had killed the only person he allowed himself to remain close to, Ajak, for something he realized at the end had no real substance to him. The vaporous lies of Arashem vs the tangible truth of a former love experienced and remembered.

I had the exact same thought when I came out of the theatre watching this movie. I was like, I read so much about it and was hyped up too, an excellent cast, setting up Black Knight, Celestials but my thoughts were 'Its good but underwhelming'. Also agreed that it would have done wayyyyyyy better as a Disney+ series of 5-6 episodes. The one thing I was most bothered by was that Kingo never shows up in the final fight. I kept waiting for him to show up out of nowhere like Han Solo but he never does. I understand that he didn't want to fight his family over whats right but come on man you gotta pick a side. If you believe in 'Arishem's design' then fight for it. Don't be a chicken. Thats the worst and then he comes back in final scenes like it was nothing. Also the fight scene between Makkari and Ikaris was fucking lit. I think all of us enjoyed that a lot! It was basically Flash vs Superman but infinite times better!

Before I watch this, I must say I really enjoyed Eternals, it was a gorgeous movie with great characters, all the shots were very pretty, but I do think they tried to tell too much story for one movie. They tried to introduce 10 characters and tell 7,000 years of backstory while dealing with a world ending event. I agree with a lot of people who were saying we should have had a Disney + series to introduce them and tell their past, with maybe the movie being about the situation with Tiamut hatching. Still holding out the hope for a Disney + prequel series in the future. I hope these characters return as well. Although I have to say they did a very good job weaving the past and present together.

My main thing with the Eternals is that it definitely should have been a Disney+ show, I think that would have fixed a lot of it, if we didn't have to cram the universe spanning backstory and split, the collection of people in like 5 different locations, the existential stuff and the big plot twists and fights into 2 and a half hours. It maybe would have helped with Sersi and Ikaris so that they weren't massively overshadowed by the minor romantic subplots with better chemistry. It definitely would have helped with Sprite's thing and we could have gotten actual character development for the 9 of them that don't immediately die.

If there was some equivalent of a Snyder Cut (a Zhao cut?), I think I would like this movie more. The thing that frustrates me the most is that I love the found family trope. They could have EASILY done it here - these characters have known each other for a millennia and even if they're broken apart, they still have years of history together and clearly want to work together despite the past. But the family aspect of it felt like how the original Suicide Squad handled it: They had a scene together and decide they're going to fight as a family, with some banter thrown in. But the problem is I only know like two details about every character at this point, so I, as the viewer, ask why should I care that they're banding together now? Like sure it's to stop the big bad, but it feels like they're doing this more because the plot demands and not because the characters themselves believe this is the right thing to do. And thank you for bringing up the pacing or lack thereof. I kept asking my roommate what time it was while we were watching and, after what I thought was an hour of the movie, it had only been 20 minutes. I really wish this had been a Disney+ show because I really feel like it would have thrived. I'm just frustrated that there was so much I should have liked in this movie that I didn't. So many people I knew loved this movie and I felt like I was crazy for not liking it. Like I must have missed Something, clearly... But it really just is The Last Jedi again where it's so polarizing that we'll be talking about it for ages. And maybe that's for the best.

So many good ideas unfortunately underdeveloped. A Disney+ limited series would've been perfect. An episode for each member of the team, beginning with the entire team, and being capped off with Kro and other Deviants. "Story" Skeleton Ep1 - Sersi - Shows her wanting to aid humaity in becoming less divided and more united. Ep2 - Druig - Shows his wanting to unite humanity trough control instead of growth. Ep3 - Gilgamesh - Shows his becoming a mythic warrior who has a strong drive to protect, even if not wanted. Ep4 - Kingo - Shows his infatuation with humanity's expressions of imagination. Ep5 - Makkari - Shows her growing boredom with humanity. Ep6 - Sprite - Shows her spreading wonder and joy, despite her inability to be truly happy. Ep7 - Thena - Shows her becoming a mythic warrior and gradually fracturing mind. Ep8 - Phastos - Shows his wanting to advance humanity, eventual disgust with it, and partial return of faith. Ep9 - Ikaris - Shows his inability to connect with humanity and arrow-like mindset. Ep10 - Ajak - Shows her growing separation from her goal and eventual turn against it. Ep11 - The Emergence - The collision of every member's viewpoint and eventual resolution.

I also like the possibility of what is going to happen with Dane and I want to see Ajak again. However, all these things are not enterally connected with the movie we already have, this movie is a lot in a very short time and would have worked better as a series as your suggested. TLDR: I’m just repeating what he said since this is exactly how I feel. The biggest red flag for me was the trailer. Fyi I’m not a Marvel fan, so I have no idea what is it about whatsoever. Usually the only time I want to watch a movie is when the trailers make me feel engaged, but this is not the case. I still had no idea what the movie is going to be about and what’s the motives of the eternals. I watched the trailer in the cinema twice, yet both times feel really empty for me. I went to watch it with my friends anyway since they are Marvel fans. I told them to not expect too much, and surprise surprise, we all dislike it. We kinda agree that from 2/3 onwards was kinda boring and feels ridiculous long. My personal pet peeve is the exact same problem. They touched on so many topics but never bother to do anything with it. Like why would you bring it up but act like no one ever said anything? Also Sprite could’ve been one of, if not the best character in the entire movie, but instead they cut it short. I mean her betrayal is still somewhat reasonable and not completely irrational but there are so much depth you can build out of her. I don’t hate the movie, but I don’t like it either. It would’ve worked so much better as a series if they’re going to give each individual characters a subplot.

What I will say though is while the characters definitely could have been fleshed out a lot more, I still found them very likeable and entertaining, and I felt like the film gave me enough of their perspectives on the situation, their personal struggles and the in group conflict for me to be invested. While I hope that they get more exploration moving forward, I can say I already care about some of the Eternals than I do than some established MCU character like Dr Strange or Captain Marvel. Their is a lot of things this film does right, and does wrong, but I also feel like some elements of this movie are very subjective, and which side you fall on will basically determine how feel about it. I acknowledge that some elements of this film ticked a lot of personal boxes for me, that I can overlook it flaws, but I also do think that these movies flaws don't justify the amount of negatively this film is getting. I felt like the "main two" of the eternals were picked to be that because they were Gemma Chan and Richard Madden and they were supposed to form a cool, standard-beautiful, young couple (?). I felt so much more love coming from Gilgamesh and Thena, even if it was never stated that their relationship was anything other than platonic. Gilgamesh's death was the only thing I felt in the entire film. He cared for Thena and looked after her for thousands of years, while Ikaris just walked out on Sersi without even making up an excuse. Also, there were writing issues that wouldn't have been overlooked in an MCU film just because they had to squeeze SO MUCH in two hours. At the final battle, Druig disappears after being lasered into the dirt by Ikaris and when he comes back he says to Sersi "I can't do it, it has to be you" or something. But we haven't seen him try! We haven't seen him fail! He should have failed and then reached out to Sersi, not just TOLD her that he couldn't do it himself. And what about Kingo just refusing to take part in the final battle? The climax of the film? Come on! If they all feel like "family" and he agrees with Ikaris but doesn't want to kill anyone else because of it, shouldn't he feel conflicted? Shouldn't he struggle? We need to see some of that! He should at least have been in the middle of the battle trying to keep them all from killing each other until the Celestial emerges, because then he would have served what he believed was his purpose and no member of his "family" would have died. No? It was just so much exposition crammed into two hours.

Honestly, when I saw the movie, I liked it, but it was honestly kind of disappointing. Starting a series of movies with an ensemble cast means it doesn't have the time to truly explore the individual characters, leaving them kind of flat and uninteresting. It would have been better as a series like wandavision, giving them more time to explore both the setting of an eternal conflict between deities (of sorts), and would have given it more time for dramatic build up. Alongside that, I really thought the main romance of the story was kind of unnecessary to the plot? Like, it doesn't seem to move anything forward, it was just there because the writers realized they needed to give ikarus more depth so he isn't just a superman clone. It's kind of a major flaw within television as a whole, using romantic relationships to give flat characters depth, because then writers tend to ignore the character's relationships that aren't romantic. This movie did a good job of making sure the romance didn't dictate Sersi's or Ikarus' characters, but they still spent so much unnecessary time building it up.

Yeah I think it would've been better if it was a series too. But I'll give it credit for being different and visually more pleasing than the entirety of MCU, they actually used the budget to travel and film in real locations and didn't use the green screen that much and the CGI was well done. And I'm actually looking forward to seeing these characters again, I'm not attached to all of them tho because there's so much going on and they don't let you get to know all of them, but I'm still very excited too see them in the future.

Ahhh I'm so happy you made a video about Eternals. One thing I want to point out is that Ikaris's Terminator twist doesn't really come out of nowhere. Ajak said twice throughout the first hal of the movie that Ikaris is crazy about his faith in the Celestials. Druig once alluded to it too (I think). Halfway through the movie, I was just waiting for him to snap and smash the hell out of the rest of the team. In my opinion, it didn't even happen TOO late.

Something I find fascinating is that despite all the overlapping stories that never really get the time to develop that they deserve, there are SO MANY scenes of the group just kind of....hanging out and talking about nothing important. Like...they just....sit down and....talk....the world is ending and nobody has a personality, but sure....sit down to dinner and make small talk....

To me the movie felt like they tried to adapt a huge comic with miles of subtext and exploration of fascinating ideas (basically 75 issues of DC's The Sandman) into 3 hours. If these characters got the same deal (a series) like Sandman did with Netflix it would have been incredible. Even the concepts are similar.

Yeah, I remember walking out and wishing it was made into a series instead. I really liked the hints of characters that we got, and thought there was a lot to explore. I'd be curious to see if there were a longer version, whether it would make more sense. Definitely agree that Kro was a miss. And Thena's plot.

Now that I watched the movie and your video for the second time I kind of agree with the most things said in the video. It could’ve been way better and more detailed as a mini series. Also I totally agree on the pointlessness of the deviant villain. Like what is he trying to do? Kill all Eternals so he has to die inevitably bc the Thiamut is destroying the earth????? And Ikaris killing himself at the end of the movie??? (I first thought he flew away to snitch on the others to Arishem and got so confused that he just straight up flew into the sun) But out of some unknown reason I still really really really liked that movie. I really don’t know why but I do. And I really hope that they do something great with the Eternals in the future. Also: Your videos are really great! I’ve been watching them for a while now (even if I dont know the shows most of the time) and I really enjoy them! Your videos on Fleabag and Sex ed even convinced me to start watching those shows and I don’t regret that at all.

I'd heard a lot of the mixed review, so I went into the movie with as few expectations as possible. But more importantly, I went into it wanting to like. These days, with movies and shows, I WANT to like them. I don't force myself to, but I also don't let the critical reception or expectation stop me. It feels good to like things. This wasn't the best movie ever, but I enjoyed it, and I'd like to see more of the Eternals. Side note: I found the last Ikaris scene kinda funny. Because he's Icarus and he literally flies too close to (well, into) the sun.
