When I saw the first film (Before Sunrise,) I instantly fell in love with Julie Delpy (As I'm sure EVERY straight guy did!) Nice to see a third installment for their characters,...great stuff!

Hadn't ever seen this interview before. I'm a huge Linklater fan and this reaffirms his status as one of the greatest filmmakers. His answer about "Just because these films are dialogue heavy, doesn't mean they'd make good stage plays" is so true. Jesse and Celine's story has to be told through the lens of the camera, capturing the minutia of their faces as they wander.

I think Ethan likes to over think stuff and he has deeper thoughts, and he wants to tell everything that crosses his mind at time of speaking! and Julie is just so sweet, two different but interesting personalities :)

I enjoyed all three films, but definitely the best one for me was the second one, I felt like in "midnight" she comes off as too extreme and irrational, playing into the "spitfire" sexy woman (think Penelope cruz), and definitely her character does explore the frustration that I think many women have and the dilemmas and insecurities that are more acute as they age and have to juggle family life with their own aspirations (like her songwriting, or job opportunities). This is a nice love story though, and definitely a witty dialogue at times too.

I agree, the second is my favourite. It is stronger than the first because it has an undercurrent of conflict, and the terrifying meltdown in the car, but it has the romance and simplicity of the first.

I blocked the third one from my memory...in fact until I came across this interview, I'd forgotten it existed! As you say, does explore the feelings and frustrations of many woman at that age and situation but I found the tone of this third film so...removed from the first two. It was strange. The beauty and magic of the first two was that it was essentially just two characters and their dialogue but this film just seems very 'normal' and unremarkable. The character of Celine is very brash as Julie Delphy has become 'americanised' over the years since the last film. This third film would have worked much better if it followed the format of the first two - just them. Or not exist at all....I like the open endedness of the second film.

@@ellieg7160It reflects real life a lot more, as you get older the spontaneity that youth provides tends to dwindle down. And you have to really work to keep it together

Can they do one more film, please?!! I would love to see where they'd be in 2023...Did they end up breaking up in Before Midnight, or does their relationship resuscitate and succeed after that last scene?

An article titled "The Real Couple Behind Before Sunrise" was released on Slate's website shortly after this video was posted. The author claims the girl who inspired Linklater's story died not too long after she and the director met. Thus Linklater avoids referencing her in interviews but her name can be read during the dedication at the end of Midnight's credits.
