Tapered heels are very handy. I have a Scott with a tapered heel in my shoeing rig and I find it very useful. Somedays I miss it when I'm working in the shop. Thanks for the video!

Been using the 66lb version of that anvil for about 3 years now, it's been a great piece of kit as I've been learning blacksmithing and bladesmithing

I've just aquired an anvil with a long tapered heel ...its a double horn but also has great hardy and pritchel placement for me. I think its an old Trenton but I could be wrong I like that you have managed to create something so useable for you, not many people manage to have an anvil or ASO that fits lots of what they want to do with it... thanks for sharing

That's the main reason I got interested in blacksmithing, i got tired of not having tools, so, im learning to make my own 👍❤️

You know, the way you discussed your dream anvil and even went as far as to customize one reminds me of how I am working on my dream rig for animation! In the past, I used rigs that were not very flexible and cumbersome to use. It was only until the earlier part of 2021 when I really experimented on custom rig setups and controls. Currently, I am in my fourth or fifth revision of the rig as I apply new ideas that crossed my mind recently. Hopefully, the next time I full test this rig means I won't have to make any serious adjustments. I'm glad God has provided you with the talent to work with metal and me with the gift for animation!

And this is right off the bat a great introduction into what to look for in a decent anvil! Got dang son!

An acquaintance, by Miquelon lake, has built a reciprocating grinder, for refacing an Anvil, driven off the line shaft in his blacksmith shop. Pretty cool I thought.

I just want to make a point about the shape of the horn (normally i refer to it as the bick) that the flatter/broader shape can be more useful for forming than you realise. A conical ice cream cone is harder to take out tight spots in a ring, as an example.
@EthanHarty Жыл бұрын
Good point and I agree. I did leave this one slightly more flat towards the top but the way that it was it was just too extreme for the other things I wanted to do with it.

😮 You did some pretty great work here on this anvil.

I absolutely love my Nimba Titan anvil. I have had it for a couple years now. I highly recommend them if you can swing the price.

A hardy with a nice lock pin or lock bolt would be awesome.! Sometimes you want to set that portable anvil on its side in the sand. And use a long handle hammer. Locking the hardy in would be just grand.

Nice Tutorial 👍Going to look out for an anvil like that. How high should the Anvil face be from the floor? Can you do an Anvil stand build video? Thanks

Very nice. I'm suffering from a not-90-degree-angled anvil body too, but mine has some sentimental value to me. Anyways great video.

Very nicely done! What did you use for the welding repairs on the face?

Just plain old 7018

How did you stamp the side? It is super cool looking and looks like it was there from the start! Did you do it cold?
@EthanHarty Жыл бұрын
Just with your average letter stamp kit.
@williambrouwers5664 Жыл бұрын
Huh! It definitely must be soft! Did you just do it at the anvil, or did you use a fly press or treadle hammer?
@EthanHarty Жыл бұрын
Just sat it on a stool and did it with a hammer, like a hillbilly would;)

Hey Ethan, I’m just starting out in the blacksmithing process. Any beginner tips and or advice on tools?

I would take one of Alec Steele‘s online classes and beginblacksmithing.com, it walks you through everything if you’re a raw beginner.

A guy i worked w was into motorcycle building. He insisted on buying cheap dogshit hammers and anvils. He brought in some 200lb POS anvil w made in china spelled wrong cast into it. 1 swing and about 1" of body filler popped out of the side. After he left the shop we threw it on a scale, his 200lb anvil was a whopping 85lbs. It was just a shitty casting that should have been scrapped but i guess body filler was on sale because they just built the missing parts out of it and sold it to America.
@singlended Жыл бұрын
Melt it down & re-cast it into a more useful Euro-style anvil.

Comment about masks is "unfortunate" on a blacksmith channel... It's a problem of people who don't want to wear a mask, and don't care if it endangeres others, not a very charitable or "do unto others" attitude... more like the typical American "I'm ok, screw you" attitude... And, to think that I had found a nice blacksmith, and blacksmith channel...
