if you haven’t already, i recommend reading the genius annotations that ethel done for every song on this album. there’s a whole concept / story behind it and it’ll let you enjoy the songs and the lyrical content more when you understand it. great video as always smags :)

"enjoy" is definitely a uhhhhhhh... choice word for what understanding the story might let you do. Definitely enhances the experience though. Amazing album.

@@Zekew24 you described enjoyed in the same sentence you criticized the term
@Zekew246 ай бұрын
@@Evelynn_of_Runeterra I guess what I mean is that stories of child abuse, familial trauma, sexual assault, murder, and cannibalism do not bring me joy. It's certainly not a pleasant story. The listening experience is, however, definitely more impressive and profound when you consider the entire lore that Hayden created for this character and that she was able to weave these narratives together into a cohesive album. Some of these songs bring me physical discomfort after learning what they are about, but I am still glad that I know. Hope that helps!

Thank you for reacting king, this was great. As some ppl already mentioned the genius song descriptions are a decent place to start to get an idea of the underlying story behind the album but beware the annotations on individual lyrics can sometimes be opinion and not at all true to the story Hayden (the artist behind Ethel Cain) is making. There’s a lot of bits and pieces of lore scattered around various places online that hayden released through her (now deleted) Tumblr, Instagram lives, etc. The current plan for Hayden now is to release an EP of B-sides from the album that further explore the relationship between Ethel and her lover that she sings about in A House in Nebraska. She plans to release 2 more albums to make a trilogy, the next being Preacher’s Wife (Ethel’s mom) and Preacher’s Mother (Ethel’s paternal grandmother). She’s also spoken about wanting to turn these stories into books and maybe movies. It seems she might’ve already started on the novel version of Preacher’s daughter. I would love if you could react to her EP that she released before Preacher’s Daughter, “inbred”. You’ll definitely love some of the songs on there.
@marbnielk69516 ай бұрын
The album is a concept album that tells the story of ethel cain (character by artist hayden) about the abuse of her preacher father, running from home, questioning her faith, meeting bad guys and eventually being pimped, murdered and cannibalised by one of her lovers. I'm not sure if hayden herself is religious anymore but she definitely is not a fan of the church, the album is definitely about how it feels to leave the church, also since she is a trans woman it is easy to imagine why the church from the south wouldnt be a great environment for her to grow up in
@florencewelchsguccidress69736 ай бұрын
She is spiritual still and very in love with Christian aesthetics but she does not really endorse the institution of Christianity.

most people tend to listen to PD first, then inbred, then golden age. inbred and golden age dont follow the story of PD, not everything is real but its closer to true events from her life. i highly recommend both of them, and they are both significantly shorter than PD. dont be offput by the name inbred btw, its an experience of its own.

There are a lot of concepts on here that I didn't pick up on my first few listens, and as skilled of a lyrical analyzer as you are, there are some you didn't pick up on either (especially Strangers. If nothing else, make sure to read more about that one).

Knowing how much you liked Grace, I would love to see you react to any album by Tim Buckley, Jeff’s dad. They allegedly only met once as Jeff grew up without his dad, but listening to Tim you can tell where the talent came from. Sadly we lost both of them way too soon, but both were incredible talented and had such unique voices! Would recommend Goodbye and Hello as a start, but you can’t go wrong with Starsailor or Happy Sad either, all amazing albums!

alrighty! ill be the paragraph girl explaining the lore :) essentially "ethel cain" is a manifestation of Hatden Anhedönia's trauma that "had become toxic and cancerous I had to cut it off" this became ethel cain. Ethels story goes as follows: her dad (who used to abuse her, as heard in hard times and family tree) died in a housefire. she meets willoughby in house in nebraska, but he leaves without a trace. she then meets some guy (forgot his name) who doesnt treat her well at all and he ends up passing away in a police shootout. she then meets isaiah in "thoroughfare" something important to note is that while thoroughfare portrays this love as a true pure lovd, ethel cain actually released a missing image poster saying she was last seen being forced into his truck. isaiah then does as he says and takes her out west. however, he instead starts pimping her out and feeding her drugs. she dies in august underground and ascends to heaven in televangelism. please please PLEASE i know im missing a lot but dont come for me 😭
