Thanks for the vid. I enjoyed it and subbed. Been a fan of Nick Cave for a long time as well. Basically as long as I can remember, since my parents would play his music often. Imo this album has some of his best stuff since Abattoir Blues. Song of the Lake in particular, I really like the lyrics and the sound of it. For me it's a massive step up from Ghosteen. Would personally rank the album in an order like: Song of the Lake Final Rescue Attempt Long Dark Night/Frogs Conversion Wild God The rest of the songs are approximately equal to me. Nice to read your interpretation of the lyrics. The "And he knew that he would dissolve... he would in time evaporate" lyric of Song of the Lake really stood out to me as well. I interpret it as: whatever problem the man on the shore would have to face, he would have to inevitably face it anyway (dissolving or evaporating), so he might as well do so together with someone else (the lady in the lake) as that option at least has a positive. I think it can directly relate to Nick's own experience with grief. Seeking out his wife who is suffering the same grief instead of choosing isolation.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment and for subscribing! I definitely enjoyed certain aspects of this album, particularly glimpses of the more classic Bad Seeds. Ghosteen is an interesting record and you could argue that this record couldn’t exist without it. It’s a progression that needed to happen. Your interpretation of that line is interesting, offering a more literal take on the lady in the lake. I’ll have to revisit these tracks while reading along more closely. Song of the Lake and Frogs really are the standouts for me. I also think it’s time for me to go through Nick Cave’s entire discography again. It’s been a while. That could make for a cool video too. Thanks!

Good video. Loved the format and editing here! Forgive the long comment. I have a long commute and that’s where this album is getting most of its play. From just those top to bottom repetitions I get the impression the album comes in three movements. Song of the Lake through Frogs. Joy through Conversion. And then Cinnamon Horses on to the end. The first part could almost be a “How we got here” chapter. The second movement, when taken together, comes across as his finally finding the path out of his suffering; culminating in Conversion with his new found exuberance and lust for life. In that way I do wish these 3 tracks in the same order had been moved to the end of the album allowing that big crescendo of drums and choir to be the outro the audience is left with. As it stands the final movement feels disjointed to me. As you pointed out: Good enough songs in their own right but not necessarily coherent to each other. All that said, I adore Nick’s work old and new, and am overjoyed that he’s relatively upright again after everything. The wonderful mood this album creates seems to be infectious.

Thanks, I appreciate it! I think Conversion is the key track of the album and definitely the most important thematically. I actually agree that 3 track run would have made a nice conclusion to the album, but it also could have made a good turning point sonically as well. As it stands in the track listing, it doesn't effectively "convert" the sound of the album for me. Cinnamon Horses (arguably the saddest on the album) coming after that amount of energy feels kind of jarring. Having the somber tracks at the beginning, Conversion in the middle, and end out on the happier tracks would have been better for me.

@@StegoReviews That’s a really good point. Not saying it needs to be concept album but there is a lot of connective tissue song to song on this album. Come to think of it, Frogs would have made a great ending track too. I definitely agree Cinnamon Horses should have been earlier. But nitpicks of track order aside, and a couple small gripes left alone, it really does go to show how much life left there is creatively in him and the band. Most creatives don’t get better as they get older, but these days I don’t know of anybody is doing what the Seeds are doing

Yea definitely, I guess it’s the Dave Fridmann production coming through a bit (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev)
