It isn't a "rich person" thing; it's an entitlement thing. I've had poor friends who knew I was struggling, demanding money or groceries or a ride somewhere because I had a job and a car. It didn't matter that I was living on a shoe-string budget or that they could've gotten a city-funded bus or transit pass. It was because I had something and they felt that I owed them.

AMEN, Sister! I was a massage therapist who worked at a spa way out in a little country town. A young woman who lived in a very impoverished neighborhood came in one day with a voucher for a free massage that she had won. She complained about our spa, as if she were a resident of Beverly Hills and as if she were used to the most shi-shi accommodations. She of course did not leave a tip after I worked on her. When the receptionist her asked how she liked her session, this young woman snorted and said something like, "Well it was better than I thought it would be, considering that it's in this dump!" That moment taught me a lot. This girl was poor--even if the address she listed on her spa intake form hadn't confirmed it, her clothing and her overall appearance confirmed that she had little money. And yet, she acted like she expected and deserved something much, much better than this spa treatment. I learned in that moment that entitled attitudes don't necessarily come from a life of wealth. Also, this girl didn't say "thank you" after her free session. She took the lotion samples I gave her as a parting gift and slammed the door. I wish her well, wherever she is today...

Just read an older review of this book, centered on Ethel’s treatment of her kids, especially Robert, Jr. CONTEMPTIBLE WOMAN! She also slapped an African-American servant and called her the N word, was viciously rude to another employee who was either Asian or Indigenous. And then her expectation of free services from caterers, etc., because “it should be a honor just to serve the Kennedys.” I’m noping out. People who act like that have NO welcome space in my head. It’s a service of the biographers and Cheere Denise to remind us of these true stories of how NOT to live. Thank you, C.D.

Thank you for reading this book with us. I honestly don't think I could have gotten through it on my own. My takeaway so far of Ethel is she was unlikable, entitled and useless. I have to roll my eyes when hearing present tributes of her singing her "humanitarian" praises. She couldn't even take proper care of her own house nor her surroundings, and eventually not even her children. Regardless of one's upbringing, at some point one becomes an adult and realizes what is right and wrong. Apparently, as Ethel became an adult, she missed that memo.

In Pat’s defense on picking up an Irish brogue: I’m an auditory learner and I can’t help but take on a accent when I’m with people who aren’t from my home state. I literally think in their accent. It was really bad in college when the women I hung out with one semester were from Persia and Brazil. I had to retranslate everything in my head to my accent before I spoke. I was even dreaming in an accent. If I’ve been binge watching a UK show, and I’ve had a couple glasses of wine, forget it, I’m speaking in their accent and I couldn’t change it if I wanted to. It’s embarrassing. Especially when it becomes racial ie. I’m a white woman with black friends🤦🏼♀️

My first memories of what they called movie magazines covered with Kennedy woman and their clothes and hairdos. My mom never bothered but a couple of aunts had them and loved to visit and look at everything in bed.
