It isn't a "rich person" thing; it's an entitlement thing. I've had poor friends who knew I was struggling, demanding money or groceries or a ride somewhere because I had a job and a car. It didn't matter that I was living on a shoe-string budget or that they could've gotten a city-funded bus or transit pass. It was because I had something and they felt that I owed them.

AMEN, Sister! I was a massage therapist who worked at a spa way out in a little country town. A young woman who lived in a very impoverished neighborhood came in one day with a voucher for a free massage that she had won. She complained about our spa, as if she were a resident of Beverly Hills and as if she were used to the most shi-shi accommodations. She of course did not leave a tip after I worked on her. When the receptionist her asked how she liked her session, this young woman snorted and said something like, "Well it was better than I thought it would be, considering that it's in this dump!" That moment taught me a lot. This girl was poor--even if the address she listed on her spa intake form hadn't confirmed it, her clothing and her overall appearance confirmed that she had little money. And yet, she acted like she expected and deserved something much, much better than this spa treatment. I learned in that moment that entitled attitudes don't necessarily come from a life of wealth. Also, this girl didn't say "thank you" after her free session. She took the lotion samples I gave her as a parting gift and slammed the door. I wish her well, wherever she is today...

Removing a tray of caviar for yourself, flashing around expensive gifts, not training your dog and allowing it to wreak havoc in the house and with someone else's belongings is the lowest form of behavior. Uncontrolled. Entitled. Pathetic. It is no wonder it is reported Jackie did not fit in.

I worked as a night nurse for a religious order caring for elderly and very ill nuns. I knew a few who were x-marines! More than a few had been real tomboys back in the day and taught PE to young boys! In college, an elderly college nun (70s?) tossed a baseball for the start of the Red Socks baseball game. No kidding! She was a famous in Boston! (She could toss a 60-mph softball well into her 70s!) Lesson learned: NEVER underestimate a nun!

The “Joanie Loves Chachi!” scene from the movie “Dodgeballl” You’ve got Bum Leg George over here w/ some random Scandinavian gazelle woman, BEATING both Bobby and Ethel at their own sport. 😂😂😂 I CANNOT…it’s just too much.

Many women of this era were not raised to do anything useful if they were rich. It was shopping and lunch. When I was in college in the late 70s I was in a sorority. I had to interview the other members. When asked about their ambitions after school almost everyone said go out to lunch and go shopping.

Some people pick up accents quickly, without trying. I’m one of them. I don’t try to pick up accents but if I spend enough time in a foreign, English-speaking country, it grows on me. I have no idea why. One of my daughters is the same way. It wears off after a couple weeks at home.

@@cheeredeniseit’s not mimicry in my case. I just speak the way I’m spoken to. A musician friend said it shows my musicality. Though I don’t have a beautiful voice, I usually hit all the notes. So no, I don’t feel “silly” to take on the speech patterns around me. It’s unnatural for me NOT to do so.

As a young 17 year old pregnant bride who was very poor I at least knew how to cook meals for my hubby, and keep our tiny flat clean. Just read an older review of this book, centered on Ethel’s treatment of her kids, especially Robert, Jr. CONTEMPTIBLE WOMAN! She also slapped an African-American servant and called her the N word, was viciously rude to another employee who was either Asian or Indigenous. And then her expectation of free services from caterers, etc., because “it should be a honor just to serve the Kennedys.” I’m noping out. People who act like that have NO welcome space in my head. It’s a service of the biographers and Cheere Denise to remind us of these true stories of how NOT to live. Thank you, C.D.

Thank you for reading this book with us. I honestly don't think I could have gotten through it on my own. My takeaway so far of Ethel is she was unlikable, entitled and useless. I have to roll my eyes when hearing present tributes of her singing her "humanitarian" praises. She couldn't even take proper care of her own house nor her surroundings, and eventually not even her children. Regardless of one's upbringing, at some point one becomes an adult and realizes what is right and wrong. Apparently, as Ethel became an adult, she missed that memo.

In Pat’s defense on picking up an Irish brogue: I’m an auditory learner and I can’t help but take on a accent when I’m with people who aren’t from my home state. I literally think in their accent. It was really bad in college when the women I hung out with one semester were from Persia and Brazil. I had to retranslate everything in my head to my accent before I spoke. I was even dreaming in an accent. If I’ve been binge watching a UK show, and I’ve had a couple glasses of wine, forget it, I’m speaking in their accent and I couldn’t change it if I wanted to. It’s embarrassing. Especially when it becomes racial ie. I’m a white woman with black friends🤦🏼‍♀️

I found it interesting that both Ethel and Pat (her elder sister) were so different in personality but both seem to get an "identity" based on their husbands (and their families or country). They don't seem to just get married but to "convert" to another family ( their opinions, habits, dinamics, way of life...).

Rose Kennedy never carried money either. As a young girl, she would just get on public transportation and say, I'm Rose Fitzgerald.

Hi, Cheere! I wondered if my opinion of Ethel would improve as the book progressed. So far, she seems more obnoxious and self-involved than before. Ugh.

The rotters always seem to live the longest- except the Kennedy lot who were shot or killed in various crashes.

I was told hotels in Colorado were left with damaged properties and unpaid bills when Ethel and her children vacationed there.

I think all the pranks she did throughout her life was her way of showing control over others.

Just wait till the beautiful, well bred Jackie comes in with JFK. Competition takes new heights. My first memories of what they called movie magazines covered with Kennedy woman and their clothes and hairdos. My mom never bothered but a couple of aunts had them and loved to visit and look at everything in bed. Hollywood stars were on them too but in the 60s the Kennedy woman dominated with photos and articles. I remember photos of them driving around cape cod in their convertibles with head scarfs on their hairdos.

Hi Cheere, This might sound like a strange request, but I've been listening to your commentary for over a year, and I think you are smart and probably a good 🎉. I know you review books before you let your children read them, which is great! I have a 12 year old granddaughter, and I want her to love reading like I did at her age. Can you suggest some books that might interest her and give her that spark she needs to put the phone down. 😂❤ Thanks!

Since Ethel's family wasn't house trained, and the Kennedys were pretty slovenly too, I guess you couldn't expect miracles from their pets either!

Here's my thinking regarding Fat Ann, as the Bible says 'the love of money' for some they fall in love with money, it's an addiction.
