Both ladies are classy, lovely, beautiful women from my grandmother's, "Greatest or GI Generation" time!!!! Ms. Waters was a seemingly jovial, sweet spirited, talented pretty actress. Ms. Bailey was a foxy, sassy entertainer, who always loved to dress, wearing a stunning cut!!!! My brother and I were always curious Boomers, asking my grandmother a multitude of questions about her era!! My grandmother, expressed that they worked very hard, they enjoyed a simple life, where family/friends were close knit, they loved the LORD/the church!!!!!!!

Ethel Waters (1896-1977), was my maternal Great-Grandmother's cousin. She could be a difficult person but by all accounts was a revered, professional, exacting, dedicated, and a fine actress; receiving an Academy Award nomination for her role of Aunt Dicey in Pinky. She was the second Black actress ever to be nominated for the Academy Award (Pinky), and the first Black actress to be nominated for the Emmy Award (Route 66). Incidentally, Gail Fisher of Mannix fame, was the first Black actress to win the Emmy Award. A renowned blues singer, dancer, and actress, she was known as "Sweet Mama Stringbean" during her heyday of the 1920's & 30's. Notable songs include: Am I Blue?, Happiness Is Just A Thing Called Joe, Taking A Chance On Love, His Eye Is On The Sparrow. Waters was also the first Black to host and star in her own television special. Having long since lost her svelte figure, by the late 40's she was relegated to and made the best of matronly supporting roles-usually as domestics- in Pinky, and The Member Of The Wedding. Occasionally, she turned a starring role such as in Cabin In The Sky. Although lifelong friends, Waters gave director Vincente Minnelli fits during the filming of Cabin In The Sky due to her demanding nature and her cruelty towards then ingenue singer and co-star Lena Horne. Horne in turn took out her frustrations on co-star Butterfly McQueen. Because of racism and her difficult reputation, she was blackballed by Hollywood studio execs for years until Pinky. Later film roles include: Carib Gold, The Heart Is a Rebel, The Sound and The Fury. She continued to work in television during its Golden Age : The Ethel Waters Show (1939), Beulah (1951-52), Daniel Boone, Owen Marshall, Route 66, Encounter, The Hollywood Palace, The Barbara McNair Show, Texaco Star Theater, General Electric Theater, Climax!. In middle-age, she became a born again Christian and worked/sang fervently for the Billy Graham Crusade until her death in 1977 aged 80 (Cancer). She was married and divorced three times without issue (children). In her own words, Waters was openly and unapologetically bisexual, "The BEST that ever did it!" during her early career heydey. Her Grand-Niece is 90's R&B/House singer-songwriter Crystal Waters (Gypsy Woman-She's Homeless, Relax, Regardless, What I Need, Say, If You Feel Alright!). 👍🏽💯⭐🤗🕊️

@@opheliumzone4671 Close enough. In a famous screen writer's bio (Moss Hart's if I remember correctly) he tells of going backstage to Ethel's dressing room before a performance of "Member of the Wedding." Miss Waters was there with the rest of the cast for a pre-performance prayer. Young Brandon deWilde was asleep on her lap. It was a truly moving scene. Ethel thanked the Lord for their good health and for the success they were having and probably would continue to have "if only this little bastard don't fuck up."
