It's interesting to think about how in Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke looked ethereal. However, even after she bleached her hair, she didn't really look ethereal outside the show. But I look at all the elements... Show: long, flowy, wavy hair. Real life: Short, straight hair. Show: often tan, no-makeup look. Real life: bright, bold red lips. Show: Wore light-colored, flowy fabrics (especially in the first few seasons). Real life: not so much. Show: very serious. Real life: very silly, often laughing, making people laugh. Show: rode horses and later, dragons "off in the distance." Real life: seen posing with people way taller than her. I read something once about how she never would have thought she'd be cast as this ethereal, blonde character, but she was. As a TR, I hope to take inspo from her (a romantic)!
@hrishitapaul72255 жыл бұрын
The way Emilia is described in game of thrones,is because of the look and she has really the ethreal component! I am also an ethreal and romantic body type,the actual way that how I am mould up is ,I am ethreal but it will just distance you from people and people would hesitate to approach you! One will get vibe that you are not from this world! It took me years to put on the character of being approachable and friendly,as in this ethreal thing you will feel very lonely as people would also be distanced from you! And since you are calm and composed,and have a different eye play,everyone will think you to be cold hearted that you are not,but you always react and play in a different manner,problematic for normal people to understand!But few times,or at sudden moments,you can show your ethreal personality as you are controlling it from within! In society,you are just mad and weird one!!

I have always thought of ethereal as more of an energetic, a type of energy which then means that a person with that quality looks right in ethereal clothes. As for elegance, bone structure is one piece and then there is the energy of refinement that determines how one moves and behaves. My family runs to long and lean and elegant. I am fascinated to watch my eight year old grandson instinctively fall into perfect model poses just doing nothing. It is inate and not learned plus his bone structure is simply elegant. That said, I do get that elegance can show up many ways.

Maybe I'm missunderstanding what you are trying to say here so please correct me if I'm wrong. I feel like youre watering down the original definition of what Ethereal is all about. Its about people who need those soft delicate lines to look normal, to look like themselves. They often have delicate elongated, limbs and diffused coloring. They are not about speed or force and they dont come across as aggressive or sexual. Their vibe is ancient and otherworldly by default. Its not something they put on and take off like dress up. In modern clothes and in other lines they look awkward, even homley. I recall a woman I met in a thrift store. She wore black from head to toe. I thought she might be going to a funeral. Infact she had just returned from one. We started talking and I noticed something behind her, over her shoulder. A scarf with an old tapestry design. I could not resist. I asked her to try it on for me. She agreed and we, and everybody around us were stunned. She looked amazing. Her hair, skin and eyes were all present in the tapestry and her true character emmerged. She was no longer a plain, old, dowdy lady but the face a great and noble queen! Like the kind of face you see on a bust in a museum. She was beside herself with joy. Her friends gathered around her amazed. It was like they were seeing her for the first time. I'll never forget that experience.

Thank you for sharing. I think you and I have much more agreement on the ethereal essence than it may seem. Absolutely, ethereal isn't something you can put on or take off...just like I said with elegance. But I simply think it depends far more on personality, a person's facial expression and their vibe than it does on physical characteristics (and if someone does put on this vibe, they can actually read as quite ethereal). Often, it's this vibe that allows them to pull off these 'ethereal lines' so to speak. But it's certainly not only that--I have another video on ethereal essence where I talk about the archetypes. This is the more common way of seeing it and I agree with it to some extent for sure.
@darrenchappell33805 жыл бұрын
@@merriamstyle Thanks for your response Merriam. I look forward to your follow up video. I hope I'm not being redundant but I have been thinking about this for years ever since I went to John Kitchener back in 2007 so please bear with me. Heres what Ive been thinking. I recall the video where you said pointed out that the Ethereal lines can come from archetypes found in our collective imaginations and historical references which could include pretty much any otherworldly, mysterious, long gone from the planet entity, all the way from God to Sasquatch. If you are basing you're ideas about ethereal types on that, then OK the skies the limit on what kind of people can fit into the category. Just dial into the attitude and frequency of that archetype. Years ago I learned about Angelic types through John Kitchener who described the Angelic essence as belonging to particular body types and coloring. However, the lines that both he (and Rachel over at TIB) expounded on were not really from our imagination. They stem from real life things that have been around for as long as the universe but are hard to define because they are illusive and nebulous: Clouds, Water, Mist, Wind, (fire?) and creatures who live in those realms like fish and birds. You get the idea. There is something raw and elemental as well as subtle to that type of Ethereal that other types can lean into but hardly duplicate. These subtle energies look great on this type of Ethereal but have the complete opposite effect on other types who don't have at least some of this essence, causing them to look washed out, insubstantial and awkward. According to John, very few people are one pure essence but a combination. I weirdly had a touch of all his essences EXCEPT Angelic.Go figure. Anyway, I like this discussion and I'm interested in your ideas.

The Taylor Swift's look is Fairytale Ethereal (Retro) in the Ethereal system. It encapsulates retro / vintage decade specific (mainly 19th and 20th century) Feminine styles in contrast to Fairytale Ethereal (Steampunk) which is heavily influenced by the Masculine fashion trends, especially those of the Edwardian or Victorian era. Due to Imperialism and colonisation the looks can still be recognised around the world (even when adapted to native / local culture and dress). It is fascinating to see.

I think we must also consider that the lighting that magazines/photographers employ can go a long way to contributing to an "ethereal" effect (as with the Nina D pic). If a photographer is worth his/her salt, they are going for an effect that will capture an archetype or a certain iconic image that the reader/viewer desires, or that they want to SELL to the viewer.

Hey Merriam! I love your analysis on this archetype and your videos are always so informative and interesting! One subject that caught my interest was how you mentioned low-contrast appearances were associated with the ethereal essence due being related to angels, and vice versa. I think angels and distance in general are considered ethereal because they are related to celestial concepts, such as the sky and moon and sun and stars. When we see how vast things are from a distance, we often realize how majestic and beautiful the universe is. Seeing celestial objects reminds us of our temporariness and transcience, which is synonymous to the definition of ethereal. Thus, the 'concept' of angels, which are related to otherworldly things such as the sky and heaven, can also be seen as ethereal objectively, in my opinion. This is because the word ethereal has a solid definition that can be translated across cultures. However, I do believe the 'archetype' of angels itself is cultural.
@merriamstyle4 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more! Anything looking softened has a way of looking distant, I think this is also why Lisa Bonet has a ton of ethereal essence, and her coloring actually contributes to her ethereal essence. (even though she's technically high contrast)...somehow it looks slightly softer than usual, as if she's moving farther into the distance.

TR are glamourous when they have glamourous hair and earrings. Mascara and bold lip gloss well bring out this glamourous nature. Your version of red (top : blouse, scarf etc) especially when you use light weight fabric. will do as will. Some raffles or gathering reflect glamourous nature. I am a TR and people notice I am glamourous when I wear those things.

@@dr.hebagadallahclinicalpha9871 thank you, but I'm not talking about glamorous look, but elegant look. There is a difference in my opinion. I don't like glam, I don't feel good wearing what's recommended for TRs (I am one too). I like simplicity, minimal detailing, clean lines, monochromatic looks... classic, timeless elegance.
@cianap.2815 жыл бұрын
@@Dadaandthepillsband I think some TR recommendations can go beautifully with that image of elegance. The monochrome top to bottom look (or low contrast) for TR is the easiest IMO; think 1930s Coco Chanel in black slacks and blouse. Small ornate detail could be as minimal as layering tiny gold chain necklaces or interesting seams at the cuffs or collar. Not necessarily ruffly or lacy, just small in scale. And there's nothing inherently inelegant about rounded shapes. Soft draped fabrics, rich color, supple materials, those can all be very calm and elegant rather that glam. As a TR I find clean lines work beautifully, it's just that what blogs and companies advertise as being "minimal" has clean lines in all the wrong spots. Same with "classic," actually. Raise the waistline so it sits at the natural waist, put the neckline at the right spot for you, etc. I'm fine with a little glam personally, it's the frilly, lacy and hyper-feminine recommendations I have to ignore. That, and dressing like I'm on the cover of a bodice-buster in the checkout line; uh, no thanks.

interesting video, Merriam! A Chinese phrase that could be similar to the concept of essence is 氣質. There is no direct translation in English and I struggled to find a word that could work. It’s similar to whether a person is fun, or elegant, or serious, that has nothing to do with what they wear or what they may look like. It’s the “vibe” they give off. Ethereal is not something Chinese people use a lot in describing someone’s 氣質 but I think it’s should be. It’s an interesting intersection of west vs East.

Personally, I have a classic low contrast face with hooded eyes. My essence looks "dreamy" rather than ethereal. I can escape into my imagination and in this way, an not "bothered by this earthly world" (paraphrasing). My essence will never be ethereal but "fantasy dreamer" is close enough! Practically, this means adding personal touches, nothing too delicate (no twigs, feathers or tulle fringes) but man-made looking jewellery, ornaments or lace etc. work much better. Be Trixy If you want to see if you are soft classic vs soft natural I would recommend trying on the clothes and see what looks best. SN clothes would be softly draped and slightly oversized, with delicate asymmetry while SC look best in streamlined clothes with some softness which can come through in lines, fabric type, and subtle details. You can also try on pure classic and pure natural clothes to see which group looks better on you. SN's are likely going to have wider and broader bones with soft flesh and/or smaller skeleton while SC are going to be balanced with soft flesh and/or smaller skeleton. I hope this helps, I was also unsure which one I was at one point!

Great discussion Merriam. As a woman with Dramatic/ Natural elements and little Yin, I find wearing ethereal essence style really useful. After reading the "truth is beauty" blog , I realised that I have already been using ethereal essence for a while, whenever I want to look feminine or alluring. If I want to look less Yang and more "soft", I don't switch to the clothing recommendations for a SN or a SD ( not right for me!) but I can wear ethereal essence clothing suggestions - a muted low contrast monochrome palette and soft fabric with some flow - and still stay right at home in my lines. The result? my kind of "soft", my kind of sexy.

Deep thoughts on these things, thanks. I feel elegance would be a good topic. But is there a need to talk about more common (pardon the pun) classes, for lack of a better word? For example, Dolly Parton has long said that what was aspirational for her, was to look in a way that would be zeroed in on kitsch. So, is there any point in choosing a music genre or other fandom and describing what really would be the perfect look for that? I'll understand if the answer is no. I don't see these women as looking ethereal, except perhaps Zhang. I don't think you can analyze and duplicate it. It doesn't look as seamless with some people and cherry picking a few photos doesn't mean they are ethereal or successful in that essence. Essence is not something you can... force. It's built on historical references and cultural archetype. Taylor Swift didn't look ethereal just because she looks American upper class. I can see she looks like because I'm American but it's not AS grounded in mythology and unconscious archetype. It's a recent cultural reference and that's not the same.

What happen to the video of Charlize Theron? You must explain why she is other body type in the Kibbe list.

I knew I had some ethereal when people would tell me with waved hair I looked like a mermaid, or if I curl my hair softly I look like lady godiva. Lol my Facebook profile picture was compared to a twilight character. I think it's my fluffy hair, pale skin, nearly black hair and unexpected lighter hazel eye color. I don't try to look like this, but if I curl my hair I don't look like someone who curled their hair, I look like I'm from some other time. It's weird. Lol I'm also a bit of a spaced out introverted thoughtful person. Often read quiet to others.

I wouldn't say Mila Kunis is ethereal or has an ethereal touch. She looks striking and has a dominant aura.. But not ethereal. And I can't see any etherealness in Naomi Watts. Maybe that's because she is a typical blonde Hollywood actress
