As someone who cams, I worry a lot of the time that some of the people who pay for me can’t afford it. I’m trying to grift rich people, (the site takes 65%, so I have to charge a lot), and they added a feature I hope helps that dynamically adjust the rates based on what people will spend. But again I’m worried it just targets people with issues.

Is camming a form of grifting? I tend to think grifting needs to involve some kind of deception. Camming doesn't have to involve deception, as opposed to just selling a service. Be warned that I'm speaking from the armchair here, I don't know anything about camming beyond vague guesses. So my impression could be wrong at many points. I'd guess camming can involve creating an illusion of intimacy (like pretending to find one's clients attractive or charming, etc.)-- but the clients *ought* to know the illusion is part of the service and not real. I'd guess some clients don't realize this. There could be a question of what clients should be expected to recognize, and at what point the clients' failure to recognize it means there is grifting involved. But some failures are surely client-side and do not imply that the service-provider is grifting. By analogy, there are other cases where some clients come to believe in an illusion of emotional intimacy and may become delusional, but this doesn't mean the provider of the service was grifting. Some viewers of streamers (which overlaps with camming) get extremely parasocial and start to delusionally believe the streamer is in love with them or something. Or someone at a restaurant might think a waitress being nice to them at the restaurant (emotional labor which the waitress may be required by their job to do) means the waitress wants to date them. But this doesn't mean streamers or waitresses are necessarily engaged in grifting. The client/viewer/patron should have known better. So, I'm not sure that camming necessarily involves grifting either. There may be a difference of degree though, if camming involves more risk or higher prevalence or more severity. Again, very speculative on my part-- I'm just trying to nail down the concept of "grifting" and what sorts of things it would or wouldn't apply to.

As a hot bisexual over 30 who was a clueless right-wing teen, I once fell for the grift of this one rich 12-year-old boy-child whose name I can't even look up anymore. He got paid to tell crowds of old men that Obama liberalism was "romanticism," along with other words that are fine in English Lit 101 but are complete non sequiturs in politics. That money (and probably also his parents) funded his education at NYU, where he proceeded to become an utter normie liberal. No one heard from him ever again, but he's probably carried his grifting skills into marketing, corporate law, or a radical centrist Xitter account with Ukraine and Zionist flags. Isn't it quaint that conservatives once thought that children repeating hundred-dollar words would be the thing that wins elections, instead of old men and incels repeating five-cent words?

Rebecca Watson who is a science somewhat former atheistube adjacent youtuber, a Liberal more than a leftist but sort of riding the line, did a video recently talking about Trump's n@zi lies in that first debate w/Harris, and she made a point I'd never really connected for some reason, which is that duh, the trans panic stuff, which I have long recognized as the same as gay panic stuff, and D&D panic, and anti immigrant panic, and anti Black panic stuff, in terms of the concern trolling which is that "the ____ are coming for your children!" As a way to stir up violence...same against Indigenous people the same propaganda was used Is literally all blood libel against different groups I dunno why I never put that together before. Like definitionally "the ____ are coming to (do violence to) your children" is that phrase

I stopped watching Watson’s content awhile ago. She leans way too heavily into ableist language (constantly referring to grifters and bigots as “idiots,” “morons,” etc.). Having learned of the eugenic history behind those terms, I try to avoid using them as generic insults, but Watson just lets them fly. Honestly, she strikes me as one of the too-smart-for-the-room crowd of atheists and pseudoscience debunkers who conflate intelligence with morality and label anyone they’re criticizing as not intelligent enough to know better.

Hell yeah! Thank you! I see a lot of good art as a reflection of fear or desire. Erotic art specifically is derided with statements like "they only made this because they were horny" but no, they were horny, yes, but they wanted to share their perspective and their desires with others, and that perspective happened to be being really horny about something weird. They made the art to share their perspective with the world. There's nothing wrong with that. Now, some of the content might be an issue, but horniness itself isn't an issue. It's just part of their worldview.

The battle used to be kings vs merchants. The king had ultimate power, but the merchants were good and keeping the economy active. The merchants resented the King taking a cut, and the king often felt the merchants weren't being honest with how much they made when they gave the king his cut. The interesting thing about the modern world in places like America, is that there is no king, there are just civil servants representing the people. The tax dollars don't just go to the king, but instead they're meant to serve the wellbeing over everyone though public services and such. So now it tend to be the merchants vs the government that if of the people for the people, or in short, it's the merchant resenting the people. While the merchants use public services like roads, GPS, electrical lines, etc, they resent having to pay a cut of their profits to the services. The companies even need people, often educated people to make their company function, but they don't think they should have to give a cut of their profits to taxes that would then be given to families raising children or to the education system so people will be educated to the level the companies need. Since the government is for the people, and merchants are people, the government should serve them, but not more than other people.

I love the approach in this video (and I'm definitely subscribing) but it really really needs a lot more editing (or an outline or script), as there's so much repetition and off topic side tangents that it's hard to watch as foreground media. The tangents are fun -- I wouldn't necessarily cut, like, the bit about Rasputin, but could be fit into the narrative better, rather than interrupting an idea that's being setup.
