Welcome to Ethiopia, a country located in the Horn of Africa, known for its rich history and diverse landscapes. Covering an area of approximately 1.1 million square kilometers, Ethiopia is the tenth-largest country in Africa. It is landlocked, bordered by Eritrea to the north, Djibouti and Somalia to the east, Kenya to the south, and Sudan and South Sudan to the west.
Ethiopia's geography is marked by dramatic contrasts, featuring highlands, plateaus, and lowlands. The Ethiopian Highlands, also known as the Roof of Africa, dominate the central region and are divided by the Great Rift Valley, which runs from northeast to southwest. This valley is a significant geological feature, giving rise to many lakes, including Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile.
To the east lies the Danakil Depression, one of the hottest and lowest places on Earth, with landscapes resembling a surreal alien world. The western and southern regions are characterized by rolling plains and fertile lands.
As of 2024, Ethiopia has a population of around 125 million people, making it the second-most populous country in Africa. The capital city, Addis Ababa, is situated in the central highlands and is a vibrant hub of culture and politics.
