Did you know that Ethiopia boasts Africa's largest bamboo resources, with more than one million hectares of natural bamboo forests spread across the country? It's no surprise that bamboo is widely used to build traditional houses, furniture, fencing, or handicrafts.
Meet Kidist Alemayehu, founder and CEO of Bamboo Paradise, a small company based in Addis Abeba. She started in the bamboo business back in 1999 with an initial capital of 5000birr (just over US$700 at the time).
More recently though, her company has grown so much that she employs three permanent workers and makes a good living - thanks to training and support from IFAD's South South and Triangular Cooperation programme, in partnership with Ethiopia's government and the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization.
