Ethiopia's Gurage Balager

These images were captured at our home in Amawte, the Sodo Gurage region of Ethiopia in 2003/96. The Gurage culture remains much a mystery to most Habesha due to such a small population. But if most Habeshas check their family trees, somewhere within your ancestry is a Gurage. So this is for all Habeshas. The main celebration you will see in this video is at my grandmother's home. When we first arrived to visit, they had this party prepared for us. Almost all of the people in this video are our relatives, but the rest are their friends in that countryside neighborhood. Incredible! what a sweet song indeed! Beautiful culture and amazing people! The singer, the dancers, and the place are very original! Of course, Sodo Gurages are the first who replaced the business back then from the Greeks, Arabs, Armenians, and Yemen in the 30's to 70's in Addis Ababa and other cities. They are the pioneers of entrepreneurship. Kistanes are cool and hard-working ppl! Of course, lately other Gurages followed their foot steps esp during the Derg era like Siltes and Sebat Bet!

I love the chorus vocals in the background. It is amazing how the dances or moves somewhat look like the ones of " Kiburikiri" or " mutunta", which is typical of the ethnicity known as "Beembe " in the Republic of Congo ( Brazzaville). Congratulations to the little girl performing and beating her drum..❤. All of the kids herein must have grown up ever since.
