Isolated by mountains, Ethiopia is a center of spirituality. Here, faith is a driving force in the lives of many. This episode explores the depths of Ethiopia's religious beliefs. In the holy highland town of Lalibela, young Kibkab Woldemariam studies each day in hopes of becoming a priest. In the hills above Lalibela, Abba Defar labours at bringing to life his vision of a cathedral hewn from mountain rock. Will Kibkab Woldemariam be rewarded for his studies with the honour of participating in the annual procession for the holy day of Timkat? And will Abba Defar ever complete his mammoth symbol of faith in the Ethiopian highlands?

Most of the background music you used doesn't describe Ethiopian. We never use those kind of music. Africa is wide and we are diverse one type of music doesn't represent all africa. Those musics are not Ethiopian. You should have done your research better.
@DJJonPattrsn22
@DJJonPattrsn22 Жыл бұрын
This is true for most of the music. But there is a valuable reason to choose music even if it is not of authentic Ethiopian origin. And that is because of its emotional effect. This film, being narrated in English, was clearly intended primarily for Western English speaking audiences; and music was selected that would most effectively and powerfully evoke the emotions desired by the film makers. This film is not about traditional Ethiopian music. But it is telling stories of young Ethiopian men and their emotional connection to Ethiopian Orthodox holidays.

Thanks for making this documentary. I like the way you connected the anthropological with the economic, the psychological and the ecological aspects of Ethiopians together. A couple of comments: 1. It is not a scarficial bull. It is just a bull to be killed an eaten. You might have considered it sacrificial perhaps as a result of lot of blessing and rubrics performed around the the killing of Tue animal. They are not offering a sacrifice. It is just part of the extended Mesqel blessings of the wonderful people. As you rightly said it is a season of thanks giving. 2. You might need to study about Orthodox Christianity in general and Ethiopian Orthodoxy a little further to understand what the deacon was doing and what the Tabor really is in the church's official teaching. There is a lot of misinformation and misinterpretation in the literature written about Ethiopia by Western academia.

@jeanounou
@jeanounou 3 жыл бұрын
We are not Catholics. We are Orthodox Christians, and we don't do idolatry. It seems like idolatry to you, but really, it is scenes from the Bible, and from church history in images. It is as simple as that. As for the sign of the Cross, seeking the intercession of not only St.Mary, but all the Saints, and all those things, that is what the church father of ancient times decided as the correct practices of Christian worship, and who are we to question them? We decided to follow their path in all humility. You want to be modern and invent your own version of christianity, and worship the way YOU think is right, it is a free country.

@theholyoneofisrael.9550 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeanounou So what do with the verses Jesus stated about idolatry also worshipping wood and stone, do we just though them away? You are African, how did you get christianity? Jesus was a Jew and christianity is found no where in the scriptures? which bible scenes are you talking about, chapter and verse please? come back to the God of Israel, I am West African my wife is ethiopian orthodox, it is the same as the catholic church the hats and the clothing and the holy water and smoke pot, in our house her prayer room has white graven images and a picture of white jesus and mary, this is the devil i am still praying for her to come out of this mess but she insists she is in the true faith, as black woman with a white christian jesus, lord help her.

@@theholyoneofisrael.9550 finally found the comment, i just read this conversation between the two of you, and while i agree with you that some of these practices shown looking exactly like catholic stuff, with the white jesus(when he was actually “Black”) or any of those other symbolic rituals, when the Bible says that we worship him in spirit and truth, so theres no need for all that, we follow his commandments he gave in Matthew and follow the other examples of things that he did and asked us to do. What i dont agree with is when you said Christian isn’t in the Bible. Its in acts 11-26. Christianity is biblical, a lot of people just either don’t want to or its hard for them to actually live a true Christian life, and show the fruit of it. And trust my ik who we are, we are judah, ik who revations 2:9 is speaking about, ik about pagan holidays and all. Thats because the Catholic Church and the enemy is trying to pervert what our lord Jesus Christ( or yeshua, whichever you wanna call him) has established for us. Now im no preach or anything im young in the faith but I believe i do have a strong foundation in Christ and sound doctrine. I learned a lot from pastor stephen darby(look that up on KZbin) , i think youd like him

Romans 8 : 1-2 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in christ Jesus, because through christ Jesus the law of the spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.

Yes, with the help of all mighty, the church encourages people to fast, to bless the poor. I’m mean it one of the oldest church in the world and it looks detached from today’s world. The more I ask why things are done the way they are, the closer I’m getting to God and I respect those views. There are reasons why church doesn’t evolve, this not science that we can change when we want to, this is how the apostles did it, this is the way they showed us. I’m mean we see now days church’s here in states split every or closed down and I think it’s because we are not learning from past.
