i know viewers often tease you for not finishing projects, but i honestly find it really comforting how you go about your creative process. you do what you feel inspired to do, which sometimes means projects get left behind or put on hold for a long time, but especially in an episode like this it really shows that those projects never truly go to waste, because in a way those projects will never really leave you. as someone who often feels burdened by the idea that everything i do has to be productive or lead to good results, it's really comforting to see your creative process when playing this game, to see that even things that don't get finished aren't a failure, but that they can continue to serve me even far into the future. it genuinely has changed the way i view my creative projects for the better and i'm very grateful for that :)
@EthosLab
@EthosLab 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. I always view the journey in making projects as the main reward because that is the part that requires creativity and develops skills in the game. Being able to use the project afterwards is more of a bonus to me. I think to a viewer it can sometimes feel like a project is wasted if it doesn't get finished, but that is probably because they are involved less in the development part of it (due to the time it requires) and seeing the final outcome is their main reward.

@@EthosLab Honestly, this. As someone who's constantly beaten myself up over unfinished projects, I feel like I've missed the forest for the trees: I've always recycled parts of old projects, and even the lessons learned along the way are invaluable down the line. This episode especially is a great example of how projects are never a waste of time, even if I don't finish them. It took me way longer than I'd like to admit to realize that, and the effects older unfinished projects have are often very subtle. To address what you said: as a viewer, I personally really enjoy your unique way of problem-solving and often think your projects are very interesting approach to problems the game presents you. I think wanting to see the project get finished is less about the final outcome being the main reward, and more about wanting to see how you troubleshoot issues in projects that I find interesting. I think generally we as viewers have a lot more endurance for problem-solving because we're not the ones actively doing the thinking. And sometimes there's the case where I feel like I have the answer to a problem and would love to see you explore that avenue.

Like Docm77 said in a tweet today, Etho has influenced most of the Hermits early on in all of their careers, so it is probably as surreal to some Hermits as it is to us that Battle Bane will finally see some gameplay. Some hermits watched battle bane before they ever thought they’d be on the same SMP as the man himself, so it’s just insane for them to think that they’ll be playing it.

I honestly don't get the hate for birch and jungle wood. Birch is a lovely light colour wood and while the logs are a little busy to include into things that aren't supposed to scream "This is a house built from this tree" they aren't exactly a deal breaker either. Jungle wood is a little bit like oak in terms of lightness but has some orange-pinkish undertones which are a lot more interesting to work with than oak. Also acacia for some reason?? Why, it's literally a 2 for 1 resource. Need a nice textured slate grey? Acacia's got your back. Need orange highlights? Acacia to the rescue! And where are my oak haters? That block is so basic it's physically painful.

It can be really easy to texture things and if you know what your doing it can be really pretty but the leaves aren’t my fav. Spruce for me is really pretty but when it’s striped it can be an interesting color to say the least. There is nothing wrong with acacia, dark oak, and jungle have nothing wrong in my opinion. I would love to see out of bounds kills done with partial fall damage and magma blocks. This way you can add a small amount of time delay for respawns and give the team who earned the kill a little more benefit. I'm active on a server where I built a large arena that used iron armour, iron swords, bows, arrows, and food. We have a system where there are multiple drop off points. When you get kills, you drop off excess items at these stations and they get allay-sorted back into an automatic gear up system next to spawn. It works really well, and you don't need to re-craft gear OR use Curse of Vanishing. Love the videos Etho, you're the greatest.

You could use colored beacon beams as an announcement of the winners. Like, have a pink(xmpl color) team and a green(xmpl color) team, and whoever wins, when they win, a set of beacon beams goes off to signify the winners, with the appropriate color. This way, the feedback is instant, so every one knows right away who won. This ought to be relatively simple to implement, too, since all you have to do is hook it up to the collection system, using the exact same signal that your lights use.

Banners can also be made to make them more easily distinguishable with different symbols. I'm not sure if any of the Hermits are colour blind, but a lot of viewers probably are. Or use colours not often affected by colour blindness, such as something like black, white, blue, and orange/yellow.
@GomulDart
@GomulDart 2 жыл бұрын
@@EthosLab You could also use the colored banners (or beacons) as 'sign posts' to give people an idea of where they are and are going, particularly in the mines/underground areas. I feel like it might get easy to go turned around in there or not have a good idea of where exactly you're going to end up, at least for new players. I just think that communicating the bases and routes to the players will smooth out the experience for the teams.

To encourage movement, dropping random enchantments, different weapons, or potions around the map could be an alternative to actual points. That would keep the focus of the game on PvP instead of a collection game. But that just depends on the drop rate! So you could just keep the extra points rare instead. Or do both. Suggestions: 1) Firework shoots off from the point collector when a point is scored. (bonus if colour matched!) 2) Some sort of environment event when a bonus point spawns. Think a cart is sent on a track, a waterfall is released, a light changes, etc. Something that visually tells you it spawned visible from outside the area. Lots of room for theming. 3) Spawn doors for spawn rooms open and close, so you can have adjustable spawn timer. Gives you options: built-in one-life mode (never open after start), instant respawn (always open after start), and an adjustable spawn delay. Last one especially gives choices for balancing. Teams may be dissuaded from killing in point mode since it sends people back to their base where they can protect the point collector - but if there is a spawn delay, killing the team now GIVES you time to steal their points.

Hey Etho, with the capture point system, what if you rigged up a firework dispenser to it, so that it would shoot a firework for each point deposited into the system? I think that would be a cool way to incorporate audio/visual means for players to effectively track if their points were scored or stolen, and the enemy team's status. Of course, no one would be able to fully keep track of it all at once due to the size of the map, but I think it still might be a neat effect.

Hey ergo, A couple months ago I made a game almost exactly like this on a server with a couple of friends. We were in awe at you slowly revealing the details of a game we had almost already made! Something we did in our version was have 6 point dispensing locations around the map but only have one active at a time. This forced players to move around the map and not just camp one place or remain in the same choke points. It also made a risk/reward system where the longer you hung around the more points you were carrying but it might be worth it to stay and get more or leave and drop them off if things got too dangerous. We used beacon beams on t-flip flops to turn on when a point location was active, so a quick glance to the sky showed where the combat and points were. We also opted out of having the beacon give buffs but the possibility of new varieties are there if you want more damage or speed or something where the cluster of players were. Keep up the great videos! Also side note, if you have time I'd love to see you launch a project ozone 3 series.

Etho, depending on how much equipment you give the players at start, one or more of the item-drop stations could also drop some arrows, spectral arrows etc. Suspicious soup would also be nice (and the soup group probably will happilyslurp it), but you'd need to figure out how to store the required amount.

Ergo i just wanted to say your mini-game designs are always something to be appreciated. You have legitimate skills when it comes to game design which i know you've been honing since even before minecraft lol. The way you look at every fine detail 5 times over and incorporate so many different ideas its genuinely inspiring. I personally have been making mini games in minecraft since as soon as i first played it, so i know well how challenging it can be at times to try to implement ideas into the game the way you want them to work. Yet to me your work on these games is always solid, and most importantly of all, the games are fun lol

Hey, Etho! I think it would be a really cool idea if you made the point dispenser dispense some block like scaffolding. This gives the players a choice between placing them to give their team an advantage. Maybe give one sharpshooter a bunch of arrows and have him/her camp on a roof and then break the way up. But it also adds a risk since the opposing team could scoop them up later if you're not careful. Then, at the end of the round, you would be rushing to try and pick up your scaffolding and deposit it into your bank.

Hey Etho! An idea for the points system dispensers, you could put visual indicators on them for when they're about to dispense again and maybe could also put a special, like a 1/9 chance item for them to randomly dispense worth say double or triple points. So then this encourages the players to keep going back to check the point dispensers or even fight over them if say the timer is about to indicate a drop soon. The different point dispensers around the map could also be timed at varying intervals to add variety. Love seeing Battle Bane back, you're the best Etho and can't wait to see this played! :D

Actually, it did take years, and we would joke about how Etho would post episodes on this project nearly yearly. (He's a few years overdue now.) For Hermitcraft, Etho just copied the design over from the world he created this in. But, when he designed this Etho put a lot of thought and consideration into balanced PVP design, branching paths, lines of sight (and lack thereof), and more to make not only this arena, but a much larger game as a whole. There's a reason why the mere name "Battle Bane" is a fan favorite for those of us who watched that series (and hope that it will return).

What I really love about the arena is the interconnected paths that go above and under each other. Massive buildings are cool for megabuilds, but I much prefer seeing someone being able to move around a build in interesting ways, so seeing all of this pop up in just one video (especially with all the added detail in every five blocks) was a real treat. Thanks for putting in the effort to complete it, and I'm perfectly fine with a delay in an episode in order to get a project to a good stage of "complete".

Hey Etho! You don't need to dig a pit 23 blocks deep now that there are stalagmites in the game that increase fall damage :) As for spawning points, could they fit underground and connect via bubbelvators so you could choose which one to exit through to combat spawncamping? Btw I just barely recognised the arena before you told us where it's from! Glad to have our annual episodes of Battle Bane back.

@@jadesprite Huh, TIL you have to land on the tip to get the extra fall damage (tbf I've barely actually played the newer versions), I thought you could solve this by making them 3+ high so you can't fit inbetween but nope, normal fall damage if you fall inbetween the tips. That's lame, so a floor filled with dripstones can never guarantee extra fall damage. I guess you'll have to fall back to having something like magma blocks underneath, or a way for players to walk out into a death pit if they get stuck.

@EthosLab King of the hill! Have either a main central hopper point OR a couple hopper points throughout the map, and only one hopper would be "active" at a time. The active hopper uses a beacon to designate which is active (and you can color the beacon for which team currently has it in control! Team dependent note blocks and occasional bell rings would be good too!) Each team has a stack of colored wool they throw (only one at a time) into the hopper to switch it to their team, you can use your hopper sorting methods to determine which color wool it is. Clocks for each team count up or down depending on if you want a score limit or time limit. Everyone could use wooden swords, and spawn with a splash potion of weakness hitting them for maximum livability, and it also removes the need for armor which takes up ground space and inventory space when people die. Of course, you can remove weakness or buff the sword, if they're too weak .. Also! Since the weakness runs out, players get rewarded for living longer. Interesting incentive.
@BlahCraft1
@BlahCraft1 2 жыл бұрын
He finished Battle Bane!!!! Sort of... I think it counts. Etho, for the respawning, you could have a bubble column, and have the respawn chamber be below. Also, Hermitcraft has the custom music discs, and I don't know how interested you are in making a custom music disc for Battle Bane. For the timer, while audio cues are good for finishing the event, having a cue for how long you have left is also very important. Maybe in big signs above the team castles, so they're visible from most locations, have redstone lamps counting down the amount of time left. If you also connect the respawn chambers to a central control room, where the heads collect, it's much easier for everyone to come together at the end, and count up the heads, and have a laugh. Probably have doors out of the respawn chambers only open after the event is finished, we don't want some cheaters sneaking around in the wiring.

Hi Etho! Great episode as usual. I'm super excited to see the return of battle bane!!! I have a suggestion though, maybe you could have it so that weapon and/or armor upgrades have a chance to pop out of the point dispensers that you were thinking of putting throughout the map. Maybe have it so that by default the players get just a wooden sword and a bow, and then they can find upgrades like leather armor, stone swords, and arrows at first, and as the game goes on, the weapons and armor become more powerful, until its iron armor and swords and maybe even potion tipped arrows. This is just a suggestion of course but I think it may be fun to see how the battle develops as better and better armor and weapons are introduced. It may also cause teams to focus on trying to hold the areas where these are distributed in order to prevent the other team from getting good weapons. The only problem I see is one team becoming overpowered because of this but that could probably be solved by giving them items with lower durability maybe so the other team has a chance to fight back when the item breaks! Thank you for reading :) !

You didn't want to wire up an off switch, but you might want to because it could be used for game mechanics/balancing. 1) Turn off the point droppers and signal with fireworks to start a Sudden Death for the finale, so the focus is on kills rather than points 2) Handicap a team that is pulling ahead by turning off the easy point droppers near their base and vise versa 3) Added bonus of not feeling guilty for making server lag

The arena feels so nostalgic, the build style is so 2011-2013, i love it. Giving players different classes would make how they approach combat differently. Aside from the typical sword fighter with iron armour, archer with limited arrows and leather; maybe someone could have harming potions + rod/hoe. There could also be a bow vs bow mode for the de facto casual FPS experience

Actually, it stays really organized. If you notice in his videos, sometimes, when he needs something, he sets down an ender chest, pulls out the right shulker from the right spot, then finds the right item in the right spot in the shulker. Everything has its place, and Etho knows exactly where it is. As for the chest monster we see, it's actually a very organized automatic refilling station for the shulkers that go in the ender chest. Etho was just showing the top view where he fills the refilling station, rather than the bottom view where he would typically be.

Hey Etho, another IDEA for how you can implement your point dispenser system is one using SCULK SENSORS. Using a sculk sensor will require the player to be IN THE AREA and MAKING NOISE ACTIVELY for points to be dispensed and you probably know best how to implement delays in the dispensing to stop too many points from being dispensed. You could also use nuggets as points for the sculk sensor dispensers so that you require 9 to actually get a full point, which could be counted in ingots so as to encourage staying in the area more reliably/consistently instead of running in and out once every while to pick up the point (ingot). This system can be spread throughout the map at certain key hotspots to ensure good PVP.

*@EthosLab* 23:52 Another game-play mechanic: upgrades locations. *_You can use something like _**_20:03_**_ in this case it only accept (wooden?) swords, then after a timer of eg. 2 seconds (longer for better materials) it dispenses an iron sword for pickup._* (depending on design choice) Then you can either bring the iron sword to another station that upgrades iron swords to gold swords (simplest solution, probably), or you can either be more generic: this location always upgrades iron to gold (armor, weapons... anything), or instead re-use the same machine: This location upgrades ONLY swords, but if the iron sword isn't picked up in like 5 seconds, then the upgrade process restarts with the next tier, but with longer delay (because more "expensive" upgrade), the problem with this approach is that it is very likely that 1 person chucks in a wooden swords & waits until it's diamond. Alternatively/(additionally?) you can add an enchantment station: X-material item goes in, delay, then X-material ENCHANTED item is returned (it somehow detects the type of item: sorting system?, then triggers a specific dispenser with 9+ random "pre-enchanted" items of the same type & material). The point is that the "cost" is the time where you are much more vulnerable (except for bow or damage potions, etc?) (probably good for teamwork, have to act as guards for the person). Personally I think best ideas will be either #1: multiple SPECIFIC upgrade locations, or #2: specific material upgrades (any X-material item) on different locations. I think #3: can lead to "bad" game-play behavior & situations.
