When I lived in Britain, politeness was the quality of the people there that really impressed me! Saying "thank you" when you are grateful; saying "sorry" when you think that you may have disturbed or upset someone; saying "please" when you ask for something: these are lovely manners towards other human beings! I really wish there were more people behaving like this in other countries, too. In Mediterranean countries (where I am from) people push to get on the bus/train and "sorry" is not often used! In addition, people here can overdo it with indiscreet questions about age and wages. Another point is that people in Mediterranean countries can start staring at you on the bus/train just out of curiosity, most probably to see what you are wearing. I do find this intrusive and when I lived in the UK it was so refreshing to find out that this doesn't exist there. On the other hand, it is easier to strike up a conversation with someone you don't know in a Mediterranean country, as people here are very open. I found out that - at least in London - this was not common for British people to do, as they value greatly their privacy. But these are cultural differences which make our world a more interesting place.

I really find your Bristolian accent very beautiful and pleasant to listen to. Have you ever considered making podcasts - at the natural rate you speak - for advanced learners? I learned American English at age 13 by studying at an American school, but recently have developed an interest in British English. I've been to Engand three times and I've fallen in love with it since I first went there.

Thanks for the tips on how we can have a good conversation with a native speaker. In this type of situation I think the most important thing for the student is to be reasonable in asking questions to someone, opening new subjects in a conversation context and also talking about himself. Otherwise, the dialogue can become a unintentional interview.

Alright mate? I live in Korea and major in English Education so, I am very very interested in British accent because Korean students are exposure to American accent. Therefore, when we hear British English, we feel weird. Also, there is no chance to learn British English in Korea. I like your videos and they are very helpful. Lastly, I wish there are more videos about how to pronounce or speak like English speaker. Cheers mate!

Nice to meet you mate! I agree, I have a few friends from Korea and all of them have told me about how the English education in Korea is highly based on American English and accent. I am so happy to hear that there are Koreans interested in British English though. I hope my lessons can help you all! I will try and make some pronunciation and intonation videos soon!

Hello Elliot! Thank you very much indeed for your video recordings. It is utterly important for me to follow your videos inasmuch as I USE them ( sorry for talking like this) to repeat after you full speeches as I best manage to do. I have to say that it is really working well for me. I am able to catch up your Britishness and pick it up. I hope I'm doing well with my pronunciation. After listening to and doing such shadow technique exercises your voice producing British accent remains long time in my mind before fading up.

Hello and thank you for your helpful tips. I enjoy watching your videos. I have a few questions and if you would help me with the answers I would be thankful. 1- 0:09 here you pronounce the word "master" as [ˈmæstər] whereas according to the Oxford Dictionary the British pronunciation for the word is [ˈmɑːstə(r)] 0:45 [æsk] instead of [ɑːsk] 5:15 [læst] instead of [lɑːst] 2- 00:12 here you say "there IS a lot of English speakers" whereas I'm used to reading and hearing "there ARE a lot of English speakers" 00:57 "within English culture, there IS a few rules" instead of "there ARE" 3- 5:19 "Did he say he HAS a wife?"/ "Did he say he HAD a wife?" which one is grammatically more accurate? 5:32 "You noticed he said he HAS a wife" or "You noticed he said he HAD a wife?" Thank you in advance

Haha I got really nervous ever the very first time to talk to a native person. I got improved while putting myself into some tough situations like that after & I found out that I did such a great job haha. I’m not likely to be self-conscious though. I was literally learning how to swear in Australian slang with a group of guys who were from Melbourne lmao. But I barely remembered some of them. Mixed feelings always exist but I need to get into something like that to always keep moving on lol. Anyway,I really like your way of speaking. It’s pretty clear, really understandable n quite nice to listen to. Thank you x Have a good one

Great video! Would you answer a question for me please? Actually, I will go to London to see new year celebrating. Of course I'll be there for travel but I want to experience something special for me in this time. The question is how can I ask British people to be photographed in polite manner? Because my major is Fashion and I'm blogging about fashion I'm really interesting British people's fashion. That's why I hope to take pictures of British fashion people. Is it ok just to say "Excuse me" first and to say "Would you mind if I take your picture and I have an interview" next? Or do I need to say something else to be polite and not to be seen strange person? Though It's very wordy I'll very appreciate you if you give me your answer. Thanks!
