Just did the test after replacing the whole pcv assembly on my XC60 T6 2012 and it sucks the glove's "palm" right in...no more whistle also....however since I replaced it (with genuine Volvo part) the car has a rough idle sometimes (instead of 600 rpm it looks like its trying to balance at around 500 to 550)...i changed also all 6 coils and plugs with Mahle oem parts at the same time. Scanned the car for faults through its Obd and it shows that there is a fault with its exhaust valve..(????) Any tips on that will be highly appreciated...Trying to figure out where is this exhaust valve located and if it really is the source of the problem...The car drives perfectly fine, it hesitates a bit when cold and the gearbox is going through 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd gear at low rpms (less than 1.500). Other than that it drives like new.

Hi Spiro, Always post the OBD trouble code number when you know it even if you don't know what it means. I am almost certain your code is OBD-II Code P0027 - Exhaust Valve Control Solenoid Circuit Range/Performance because that's one of the codes I have and I have a clogged PCV system. It's not an exhaust valve. It's a variable valve timing solenoid on the exhaust camshaft. Do not replace it before clearing all of the OBD codes and see if it resurfaces. I also feel you have a vacuum leak that may have been a result of something you may have done (or not done) when you replaced the PCV assembly.

Hello, I need answer to the question what will happen if I cut the hose coming from the head, close the part going to the separator and vent the part coming from the head to the atmosphere by extending it and putting filter at the end of it? I'm about to do it and I can't find any information on someone else who's done it. The reason is that the mechanics in my area do not acknowledge that kind of maintenance. They tried to rip me off with engine rebuild. I don't feel comfortable trying to replace the pcv system myself due to lack of experience and fear of mistake.
@PistonShack
@PistonShack 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter! Good point. What I will do if my crank pressure gets too high and no time to service it right away. I would just pull oil dipstick out a bit of the tube to let crank pressure vent out. It will take care of crank case pressure temporarily. As old school farm fix on old trucks and tractors just run crank case tube out but on Volvo it will be complicated. I will make a video later how to service Volvo PCV system.

@@PistonShack well the dipstick trick works but every time I drive when raining white gunk appears on the dipstick. @@PistonShack I thought I'd update you on the problem, My PCV was bad and I replaced it, The PCV was 220,000 miles old but it wasn't clogged at all, I caught it at the early stage of failure, I'm sure the diaphragm was bad. I still had a knocking and squealing sound coming from the passenger side of the vehicle so I checked the pulleys and suspension and found the root cause of the noise. I did a timing belt and water pump replacement a couple thousand miles back and the 30MM crank shaft pulley nut came off at some point. The only thing holding the crank shaft pulley on were the 4 outer bolts. I got a new nut, Put thread locker on and made sure it was on tight and the problem went away. Volvo Diesels, D4 and D5, don't have a PCV system .. they have an "oil separator" at the right side of the oil filter in connection with the crank case ventilation, were separated engine oil can flow back to the crank case. It's possible to take apart and clean but cleaning cases has shown that even after 200.000 km it's not even dirty. It is more important to keep a keen eye on the vacuum hoses in the engine bay .. fx. can a faulty engine mount (vacuum system) make some very funny noises from the oil filler .. like an old fishing boat. And the the EGR valve too to be kept clean.

Hi AN, Well, PCV system on your Volvo needs some maintenance. Replace oil trap can, pcv hoses and clamps. Do not wait until seals will start leaking oil out.

Yeah, you right you can apply the same test to most of the gasoline engines. I mentioned Volvo because they known for problems with PCV system if you don't service them regularly. Tnx for watching!

Yeah, that's how it should be. Your engine has healthy Positive Crankshaft ventilation. The engine should create a vacuum in the intake. Thanks for watching and sorry for the late respond. I missed your comment. Cheers.

Hello! D5 Volvo Diesel Engines do not have the same PCV system as gasoline motors. D5 like most of diesels have an oil separator it might be clogged check it first. Also look for any Vacuum Leaks. Let me know.

Is this oil separator same the oil filter place or where is located?? And if its the same oil filter did i need to drain oil first then take out that filter place ?? To see the separator. For leak in pipes im sure there is no. But u can say the rear engine mount and maby font one also they leak??
@PistonShack
@PistonShack 5 жыл бұрын
No, oil filter is oil filter. I'm not sure where exactly oil separator located on D5. Follow engine ventilation pipes to locate the separator. We don't have Volvo Diesels in Canada. No you do not need to drain engine oil to service the separator. To find the leak wash your engine you that will help. Mounts don't leak - seals could be the problems. I hope that will help. Thanks.
