Hey, everybody, how's it goin' Today, we're gonna be going over and showing you how to install the B&W Companion OEM Fifth-Wheel Trailer Hitch here on our 2022 Ram 2500. So chances are if you're familiar with in-bed towing or you've towed a gooseneck or a fifth-wheel trailer before, you've probably heard of B&W as a brand. They are a great company. They make quality, well-made stuff right here in the USA. So there's a lot of great fifth-wheel hitch options on the market, but I truly believe the Companion is the best, and a lot of these comes down to their jaw design. So not only do they use a dual-jaw design, it's also one-inch thick.
Each of these jaws are an inch thick. And what this does is it forms a 360-degree contact point with the kingpin, therefore it has a very tight grip on the kingpin. And having that tight grip on the kingpin is gonna do a great job of cutting down all those chucking and jarring issues that you would have with some other fifth-wheel hitches such as single slide bar jaws. These dual jaws here really grip onto that tightly and just overall produce a nice and smooth ride. So something else that really sets this fifth-wheel hitch apart from some of the other options comes down to their cam action release handle.
So pretty much every single handle on the market is gonna do a basic job of just releasing the jaws there, allowing you to uncouple your trailer. But what the cam action inside this hitch head does is it makes this much easier, especially if you're on uneven terrain. If you've ever tried to unhook your trailer, some fifth-wheel hitches, if you're not perfectly level, it's pretty much impossible to release the jaws here, but not with the B&W Companion here. That cam action assistant is really gonna make it much easier when you need to unhook your trailer and you're not on a completely level surface because, let's face it, most campgrounds aren't gonna be completely level. So having the ability to unhook when we're not completely level is really gonna save us some headache.
These are very durable fifth-wheel hitches. Pretty much all of B&W products are extremely overbuilt even for what they're rated for. This particular one here is rated at 20,000 pounds. Now, in order to achieve that weight capacity and durability, you have to make the steel on these things pretty thick. And what that does is, adversely, they're gonna be kinda hard to get in and out of the truck bed.
There's no denying that. This isn't a lightweight fifth-wheel hitch option by any means. There are some out there that, some claim that, but they're not gonna be nearly as durable here as the Companion. But something B&W has done to sort of help with this is they actually allow you to remove the head from the base. That way, it makes it a little bit more manageable to get the hitch in and out of the truck bed. We have one pin on either side here of the head. You just simply pull those out, and then you can lift the hitch head up and off the vehicle, and you can go back and get the base. Now, for the base, we got this in and out with two guys without too much issue. It is pretty heavy, but two grown men should be able to get this out by themselves. The hitch head here is a one-person job. So this is a short bed truck here. So for some of those tighter turns, we would need to go ahead and engage the slider here. And what that does is that allows the kingpin to slide back towards the tailgate, giving us more cab clearance. Now, you're probably only gonna be doing this when you're pulling into a gas station maybe or maybe your campground has some real tight cornering. So it's not something you're gonna need to do continuously, but it definitely is something that you may need to do in order to keep your cab nice and safe here. There is a fixed version of this hitch. But if you guys have a short bed truck, I really recommend going with the slider. I know it's heavier, but it's gonna prevent some costly damage down the road. Here is actually the normal towing position. So you really don't wanna tow down the highway with it slid back. You wanna make sure it's locked closest to the cab here. So as with most fifth-wheel hitches, we need the ability to adjust the hitch head height so we can get our trailer nice and level. Now, we can also make adjustments to the kingpin box on the trailer, but that always doesn't get us level. Sometimes we need to make further adjustments, and with the Companion here, we get between 17 and 19 inches in regards to that hitch head height. So measuring from the bed to the top of the skid plate, we can adjust this to get a

I bought a used B and W Companion hitch that had not been used for a couple of years. I've been trying to find a video that shows side to side motion but have had no luck. I know it is not locked up I can get it to move but not sure how much pressure it should take to move it. Should I remove the center bolt, clean it up and replace with fresh grease?

Its a good hitch but it sucks that you have to lower or take your tailgate off to use the slider part. Our first time using it, it completely destroyed our tailgate.

@@BlackpowderBBQ B&W said we needed to do that too but the dealership claims the fifth wheel won't ride level if we do that. We just take the tailgate off for now when we take the fifth wheel out.

@@BlackpowderBBQ It seems to only be ram truck owners that deal with this. But I have tried every configuration listed in the instructions and none have worked. We could adjust the pin box on the fifth wheel but if the dealership is right and it makes the fifth wheel ride higher, they said it could causes problems with my axles and stuff. Luckily we don't use the fifth wheel very often but for a company claiming to have the best hitches out there, I'm a little disappointed with it and their response to what happened.
