Hey guys, this is Jake here with etrailer. Today we're taking a look at and I'm gonna show you how to install the Dometic Roof Vent Fan. This fan is gonna be a great addition or a great upgrade to a fan that you might already have. A lot of the traditional vent fans that come with your RV, if you're putting it in RV, we have this in an enclosed trailer. Some enclosed trailers will come with these vents too, because these trailers will get so hot during the day. But typically the fan's only about four inches and it's like in the corner and honestly, they don't really do anything.
This fan is going to be a 12 inch wide fan and it's going to be able to suck a lot of air out of this or bring a lot of fresh air in. And what that's gonna be good for is in many different applications. This particular application, this is actually an employee at etrailer, they're gonna turn this cargo trailer into a camper. So this is gonna be his primary source of fresh air. He doesn't plan on putting an AC unit in here, so in the summertime he's gonna be able to either get the hot air out or pull some of that cool night air in.
Underneath the bottom, you see all these different controls. The fan will not turn on unless the top is open, so you can open it up with this turn knob. We do have automatic ones that are available that you just push a button and it'll open. And they have rain sensors too, so it'll close whenever it's raining, and then you can turn it on one of three fan speeds. You have one, two, and three.
Three is gonna be the loudest, obviously sound wise, but it actually creates a nice hum if you're trying to sleep with it on or you know, hang out in here. But one and two are a great speed. This one also is gonna feature a simple thermostat. So if you want it to be as cold as possible in here at night, you want to turn it all the way to cold. But if you just want to get some of the, say it's wintertime, you're trying to get some of the cold air outta your trailer, if you have a heater in here, you can turn it up and the fan will regulate itself based off of the temperature that it's sensing.
You have a fuse here. If something we're to go wrong with your wiring, it's gonna blow the fuse rather than frying your motor. And then lastly, we have the fan direction. So right now we have it pulling air out, but if you wanted to pull some of that cool night air in, you could flip it the other way and then the fan's gonna spin the opposite direction. Now the roof vent is going to have a tinted plastic dome on it to help keep a lot of the sun rays out, hopefully keeping your camper a little bit cooler. The inside is also gonna have a screen on it, but we do have other vent covers available so that you can leave them wide open in the rain, and traveling down the road if you're trying to air out your trailer or if you're running it to keep it nice and cool while you're driving. These are not designed to be driven down the road with them open as is so make sure you pick up one of those hoods. The other thing that's nice about those hoods is that those also you can get with a bug screen on 'em. So you're just eliminating the idea of a bug getting anywhere close to getting in your camper. As far as the insulation goes, it's gonna be fairly straightforward. Our trailer that we're putting it on today is kind of bare bones so we had to have the owner of our trailer make a frame for us on the bottom because you're gonna need at least three inches to be able to put the bottom air distribution box up into place. For that being said, let's go ahead and get into the insulation. To begin our insulation, if you're doing this in an enclosed trailer like we are, you're gonna have to make sure that you build some framework. Luckily our trailer has this open ceiling so we're able to use this framework that the owner of the trailer put in here for us. We told 'em what the measurements on the inside were and they cut out a hole for us. And all we have to do is drill out some pilot holes in the four corners, then go up on top of the roof and cut out our square. (drill buzzes) Oh, you wanna make sure you go all the way through the tin on the roof 'cause we're gonna need that opening. (drill buzzes) And we're gonna take a metal cutting blade on our jigsaw and cut out the hole on our roof. (saw buzzes) Now with our hole all cut out, we'll take som
