Hi, everyone. Aiden here at etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Thule Arcos Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier, and seeing how it fits in the back of our 2015 Toyota 4Runner. Now, it's gonna be an enclosed cargo carrier. Really great because it's going to be protected from the elements, and under lock and key. So if you've got some stuff that you want to keep away from people messing with it, then this is a great way to do it.
Now, if you're familiar with the rooftop box, this is gonna be a very similar structure. A hard shell plastic, and this one sits on top of a steel platform that goes in your hitch. Now, it shares a lot of the same benefits of that roof mounted box in the sense that it's protected from the elements, and locked under a key. But it's also going to be much easier to access. So you get a benefit over a rooftop box in that sense.
So it's easier to load and unload down here, and it's not adding so much height to your vehicle. So if you did need to drive around and maybe go into a low-clearance situation like a parking garage, you're not gonna have to worry about that added height to your vehicle, which with the 4Runner is pretty important because it's already a tall vehicle, and adding more height to it is not gonna be great. Plus it creates wind drag, which can reduce your fuel economy. Back here it's not going to be as much of a factor. Now, inside you get 14 cubic feet of storage space.
That's going to be plenty of room for maybe a small suitcase or two, some camping gear, maybe some stuff for the beach, stuff like that. The one downside to this is the weight capacity. It's not going to be near as much as a regular hitch mounted cargo carrier, one of the metal aluminum ones, but this one is going to be 110 pounds. So you can still load it up with a fair amount of stuff. Again, I think camping gear, stuff for the beach, things like that, is gonna be perfect.
And you've also got integrated tie-down points, and included cam buckle straps to run through those anchor points, wrap around your stuff and tighten down to keep everything in place. If I close the lid, the one thing I will say about this is that the latch isn't great. You have to put a lot of pressure on it to get it to engage on all three locations, the center and the two sides. But once all of them click into place, you'll be able to turn that key to the locked position and remove it. Until it's properly latched, this won't turn or remove. So you've got that security feature built in. I always like to just check that lid just to be sure. Now, one thing you might notice is that there is a fair bit of shake here at the box, but that's really just from where it mounts up. And it's just a little bit of flex in that plastic. Overall, it's very solid in the hitch. It's going to be working with our two-inch by two-inch receiver tube. And, again, has an integrated anti-rattle device and steel construction to keep it sturdy. Now back here you'll notice we've got a 4-pole wire. You probably notice the taillights on the back of of this box, which is one of the nice included features. It just comes standard with that. Plug this into 4-pole wiring and you get things like your brake lights and turn signals so people know what you're doing when you're driving around. One downside on our 2015 4Runner is that it doesn't reach. You could remedy that with an extension just enough to get it to the plug. It's very close, within a couple of inches. But, again, still not enough to reach. So we can't use that feature right out of the box, which is a pretty big downside. It does block your license plate back here, but the box has a bracket for that. So you can mount up your license plate on the outside and make sure it's always visible. The one thing it doesn't block is gonna be your rear lift gate. It's close, don't get me wrong. Less than an inch in certain parts on the corners here. But even with the 4Runners large lift gate, we can open it up and still get to the back. So if we do have stuff in the back that we want to be able to get to, you don't have to sacrifice that function. We can keep our messy stuff, maybe just our camping gear and beach stuff, out here where it's gonna be easier to clean, and all of our luggage and heavier items inside the 4Runner.
