If I wanted to mount a cargo basket on top, would the monkey bars hold it well? I'm thinking something like the curt basket

They will certainly hold well! The rack uses 6 vacuum cups with a 165 lb per cup pulling force capacity and a combined pull strength of 990 lbs. They are NOT coming off.
