The death of the DS/3DS really killed a tier of games like Etrian Odyssey that could be unique, fully-formed deep gaming experiences without also needing to be a big budget, "play on your big screen TV" sort of game. Thanks for touching on the absurd price point, of all the games Sega would pick to promote 'value' I don't know why they would go with a remaster.

Already tried the game it's so weird having a map on the same screen. Also to create a map is a little bit complicated in the end I use auto map which kill this game enjoyment completely. If you decided to buy it just wait for a discount.

I also don't care for the look of the "HD upgrade." The enemies and backgrounds just don't look that good. I'm actually content to leave Etrian Odyssey on the 3DS. I have, but still haven't started EO V and playing these on the 3DS just feels better than on Switch. I know not everyone appreciates it, but I really like the stereoscopic 3D effect in the dungeons.

I doubt I'll be buying this collection anytime soon due to the price but the release did renew my love for DS dungeon crawlers and made me dig out my old 3DS and original copies of EO 1-3. Still need to get a copy of the dark spire and strange journey at some point and I'd rather spend the $80 towards those.

Such a weird choice to do the original games rather then the 3ds versions for the first 2 games but I guess maybe they just didn't want the third game to stand out like a sore thumb compared to the others, that or there's some aspect of the 2d versions that make them easier to port then the 3ds ones, since we didn't get 4 or 5 either, which were 3ds exclusives. I loved these games when they first came out, played all the way through the first and second, but while the third was still fantastic, I think the formula finally ran out of steam for me in that one and I never got stuck, just never finished it. I did later get the fourth one on 3ds but had the same issue as the 3rd, still enjoyed it, but started to lack the motivation to grind my way all the way to the end, and then I don't think I ever even got the 5th or Nexus since it was clear to me at that point I was burned out on the series. I did later get that Persona cross over game though. All in all, I'm glad the EO series is continuing to exist, I feel like it was a pre-cusor to Demon Souls, Elden Ring, and all that, an extremely challenging game where you're expected to die, and die a lot, but every time you make it just a little bit further, it feels like such a rush. Plus there was something oddly relaxing about just grinding away in a safe area of a dungeon while watching tv or doing some other activity, and not because you weren't willing to spend the real money to get those levels automatically, but because that's just what you had to do to get stronger and progress.

The RNG of the Grimoire system was greatly disliked. EOU 1 and 2 also changed the layouts of the floors (even in classic mode) to reflect the added dungeon events in Story Mode. The pacing and writing itself of the non-canon Story Mode is often memed as fanfic-tier. Many didn't like that 1 spoils the (originally) end game reveal within the first ~20 mins of the game. So early, this can even be seen in the demo. The fight with the final (6th stratum) boss in particular feels completely unearned, as it ruins the gravity of the situation by teleporting you from B26F > B30F and temporarily making you super overpowered to easily beat them, then afterwards it teleports you back to the beginning so you can do it for real. I can go on, but this is just a few things I've talked with people about over the years regarding issues with Untold 1 and 2.

Coming from someone that has played the newer EO games on the 3ds, it feels like a nice change of pace to go back to when it all started and embrace the difficulty the games originally offered. The first time I tried out the game was EO4 demo, as a teen who owned a 3ds but didn’t have money to purchase out of the eshop. I didn’t know at the time, but now looking back, I’m glad to have tried it out and have someone recommended it to me when the eshop closure was announced. I had a lot of fun playing the game only to realize that I’ve been playing it wrong when I was character speccing! XD

This review has a whole lot of misinformation. At multiple points the reviewers says that the games are just straight ports that are only upscaled with no other changes and that is blatantly untrue, these remakes have a massive amount of QoL and UI improvements that make it impossible to go back to the original games (especially the first 2), the first two original games had a boat load of bugs that severely worsen the experience that are all fixed for these remasters. Also people keep pointing at the 3DS Untold games when they are not actually the same games at all, they're reimaginings like Final Fantasy 7 Remake and the Resident Evil 2 Remake. They have completely different dungeon designs, mechanics and all the classes work completely differently. They're also missing some content that was originally in these classic DS titles.

Great review you tackled all the issues that others have mentioned and kept it with you high polished comentator values. I too thought the price was too high, but I am a fan boy of Atlus, but lately they have been getting more and more on the greedy side, with remakes of their Persona games years later to cash in on the new content, making their old ones obsolete, and then all the DLC that is usual with any Atlus product. I may trade in my fan card soon, but I am happy with what I have so far. I did get this collection and it has sank my whole weekend. I like Picnic mode to start and then switch it to Basic once I had a couple of the talents down to ease into the game. Expert is prob the default setting of the original, so it is great they made these choices. I just don't understand why they chose the route of remaking the titles with less content, when they took the templates of the later ones. Anyway Cheers Zion.

The EO series is one of my absolute favorites and what got me hooked on ATLUS games in the first place. I was hoping that the series hadn't been abandoned because of the lack of a dedicated mapping touchscreen. The mapping does feel a little difficult and clunky in this, and takes awhile ti get used to it, but you will, and Etrian Odyssey III is one of the best in the series. I only wish ATLUS had gone ahead with Etrian Odyssey Untold III instead of this or Nexus.

I understand why some people would expect that the 3DS remakes of EO I and II, Untold and 2 Untold, would be the versions that receive remasters. However, I am of the opinion that the differences between I/II and U/2U are pretty significant and make for distinct gameplay experiences, and that the originals are still worth playing even if you’ve played the Untolds (assuming you like DRPGs). Prior to the remasters, the problem with recommending the originals to someone interested in the series wasn’t that the Untolds made them obsolete, it was that the severe lack of QoL features made them more tedious to play than they needed to be. The QoL features added in the remasters were desperately needed for the originals, while the Untolds really didn’t need them. So I am glad that the remasters of the originals exist (outside of being overpriced at launch, though I’d be shocked if they never get a price reduction at some point).

Same, I really consider the Untold games separate retellings of their original counterparts. Both are worth playing, and having a much better way to play these dated DS versions, which really needed QoL upgrades, is awesome.

EO was one of my favorites on the DS and introduced me to the concept of Dungeon crawlers. Got the collection on release. It's a bit pricey for such an old game but nostalgia won, I just wish they'd re-release the newer games as well. The series only improved as it went along.

I have one major question to ask, can you color the character portraits like in EOV? That is seriously going to determine whether I buy the collection or not. I'd call myself a casual gamer, but years ago I tried EOV, and I was blown away. It's really difficult for someone like me, yeah, but it is really rare for a game to let you customize your entire party and make each member your own. The story is something you largely create yourself as you play, and as a writer and artist I really appreciate that. On one run I made a party modeled after my favorite fictional characters. On another, I made one out of my own characters. The whole time, I would imagine how the characters would interact with each other on this journey through the labyrinth. It's worth mentioning though that the player is sort of a separate, unseen character, almost like you're the party's tactician. That's not a concept that is super prominent or anything, but if you model a party member after yourself, there will occasionally be odd moments like "you help [your persona's name] back to their feet." It's not something that really gets in the way or anything, just something I thought I should mention. If you're an imaginative person like me, you really like the idea of building your own maps, or you enjoy challenging turn based gameplay, I'd recommend trying at least one of the games. On the other hand, if you don't like grindy games or ones without a complex, deep story, this probably isn't the series for you. As for difficulty, the game takes no prisoners, but it's still playable for a casual like me if you play it cautious. I like to return to town each time I unlock a major shortcut on a floor, that way I can easily get to where I was but with my party at full capacity and possibly with new and stronger gear.
@Badingading
@Badingading Жыл бұрын
They did not bring back character color editing for this collection, unfortunately. They did add one new portrait for each class and added the ability to use any class for your portraits which was not present in the originals, and EO3 has a secondary color palette for every portrait (that was present in the original), but that's the extent of it other than the preorder SMT portrait DLCs.
@stojo7109
@stojo7109 Жыл бұрын
I've only played a bit of EO (the first one) so far, but I at least didn't notice that you could change the portrait colors - 5 portrait choices per class, couple more (references to other series) if you bought the bundle early, but I don't think there was any customization options for any of the portraits.

The first of these games I played was the first one, and I've completed every successive game and remake except the original Heroes of Lagaard (game 2). I have to say, starting with game 5 put you in a spoiled position. Every generation improved on the formula in some way. Alternate palettes were introduced in game 3 and recoloring hair, eyes, and skin was introduced in game 5. I really enjoyed the 3DS remakes of game 1 and 2, but I was very annoyed how game 1's story mode immediately gave away the reveal of the 5th stratum. That was my most memorable experience from the original game.

@@SteelsCrow nice. I was spoiled with 4 when it came out. It was my first etrian odyssey game. But I don’t dislike the first game by any means. I get that it has less features but etrian odyssey has always been my favorite drpg because not all of them have deep character progression or deeper builds. A lot of them are lazy copy paste wizardry 1 into an anime theme. Not etrian. Etrian has depth and charisma.

The claim that these are just ports of the original DS games with no added features is just factually incorrect. It makes me question if they ever actually played the original games. These new HD versions of the games have considerable QoL improvements on par with EO V/Nexus, making the speed of combat and moving through dungeons much faster by comparison. For mapping, they added the auto mapping feature from later 3DS games, as well as the ability to make paths for your party to automatically follow. Again, features that were not present in the series until well after the 3rd game.

Yeah, not gonna lie. This release is exactly as I feared it was going to be: Overpriced re-releases on new hardware. €40/game is way overpriced for what's being offered here. And while I like the Etrian Odyssey series, the first three are arguably the worst in the series. Not that they're bad - but they have aged. They're the least optimized and have little to no overarching story. There's a reason people often pick the Fafnir Knight as their favorite EE game. The added story the "Untold" spinoff series brings helps people immerge into these amazing worlds. I had hoped Atlus would've recognized that these games have not aged well and have offered them at a lower price (like they did with Persona 3/4G). But alas... This gives me little hope for the other games in the EE series. *sigh*

It will give you a very low character, but it will have more stat points and skill points overall compres to an Unretired character. By equipping it with your current gear, it's actually not that hard to bring that new Retired character up to spec.

I've been with etrian odyssey since day one and i have every title released in the west the only thing of value here for me is the 3rd game as that was the only one that didn't get remade on 3ds and even then the prettier art isn't enough to make me not just play the ds game i already have. Like he said these are good games with value, if you've never played them and are interested, this isn't terrible, but if you're an old fan like me who still has their games it's real hard to justify spending money on this.

I absolutely adore Etrian Odyssey and have been playing (and failing to complete) the games since EO2. Like the others though, I find the price too steep, and since I already own copies of EOU and EOU2, I have no need to buy the original versions of the games. Will very likely pick up EO3 on a sale, and will happily wait for a future installment!

Gotta really love how we got to see something like this come up again but really disappointing in terms of the price and other quality of life features missing. Like mannnn.... I cannot imagine any new people getting into this series with such a high price point and it being an old ds game, at the price point it really just hurt the fanbase.

CW: repeated myself with different words, im too tired to fix it The thing with Untold is that it changed how the classes worked and gave them different skills, and with how the gameplay loop of this series functions, that alone is enough to make it a separate game from EO1. And this is the Origins collection, the *original* 3, so it cant really be EOU since thats not EO1, they tell the same general story with the same characters and location names but thats it, theyre not the same game, and you even say yourself in this review that the story is the backseat to the gameplay, which is in this case, significantly different

I haven't bought the remakes yet, but as someone who's played all 5 games in some capacity (I've beaten both Untold versions, 3, 4, and I'm almost done with 5) it's crazy to see how they made the mapping work as well as it does on the Switch versions - Me and some friends in a private server always thought "There's no way it'll happen" and then it happened lul I am sad to see it's just the OG versions and lacks any of the new stuff the Untold versions bring to the table (I loved 2U's lil restaurant tycoon thing) but to me this release means that brand-new entries for the series are still 100% a possibility, even if they don't come on the Switch or future Nintendo consoles the fact the collection's on Steam helps the dream -The real question now is Untold 3 when lul-

I liked these games more than I thought I would when I played them on the 3DS. Some things I wish they had done for the HD ports would be voice acting for all diologue. I remeber that you talk to people in the pub but you dont see who they are. It would have been nice to add at least portraits of these characters. And in the labrynths when you find, for example, a spring of running water, they have a least a portrait of running water. I'll just have to wait for a discount. Was thinking of getting the PlayAsia copy but not now.

The insane value for money of these bespoke handheld gaming experiences in the DS/3DS era is something we've COMPLETELY lost this generation. Case in point being this broken trilogy of upscaled DS games minus 75% of their functionality repackaged for $80. This was the era when a $10-$20 game could be a 50-hour RPG masterpiece. It didn't need expense to have value back then.

Broken??? They FIXED tons of bugs from the original especially in EO1, the only bugs they left in were ones that were beneficial to the player And "75% of their functionality removed" what??? You can still draw the maps and everything you could do in the original DS games in fact these versions have more mapping tools, faster gameplay overall, suspend save, new music in eo3 and an unused song was brought back into eo1.

@@KatelynTea Please try to understand that just because you "can" do something doesn't mean you can do it as intended. A dual-screen game that uses both screens equally cannot be edited onto a single screen without losing functionality. Can't be done. Playing with it squished on the side of the Switch with no stylus or even worse, on the TV, is nowhere near the same experience as playing on a proper DS/3DS. New music and a suspend save are not additions on the same level of importance as the loss of the entire form factor of the experience.
