As a Brazilian who studied Villa-Lobos and played N.1 when a teenager, my ears feel comfortable with Xingue Li's version.

Li’s Etude 1 has been amongst my favourite guitar performances for years now. The intensity he gets out of it is just incredible. Hurwitz is very strong but I think that leaving out the repeats was a bad decision - Li is able to get more range of expression through them.

The nuance of Huwitz stands out, though all performances are played very well, the ebb and flow make the piece to flourish. Thank you Siccas for the email. Always a pleasure.

I’m not sure how I feel about the Reader’s Digest version (eliminating all repeats of measures) by Mr Hurwitz but I’ll survive. Mr Redzic does the slur section in Em without slurs and I don’t disapprove but the slurs are written into the music. So it was interesting but disrespectful to the Composer, so there’s that. Good playing by all and now I’ve heard at least 100 guitarists play it. Interestingly enough I once took a lesson with Uruguayan guitarist and teacher Abel Carlevaro on all 12 studies and Abel, who was a friend of Segovia (and played one of the Maestro’s Hausers at that time showed me how Villa-lobos himself played the pieces! You might be surprised. Too bad I didn’t video the lesson but camera phones were yet to be invented. Incidentally the movie The Wizard Of Oz was on my TV in the background and we took 2 hours to do all the teaching and learning. Another peculiar note: Maestro Carlevaro’s English was weak and my Spanish was poor so we did the lesson in French, in which we were mutually awful.

For me, Redzic's version is best; it's a reminder that this piece still maintains Bach's influence as well as its beauty without ploughing through it at break-neck speed. It's also a reminder that you can still play well with a different technique! Love this start of a '3 versions of...' series btw as it really gives an insight into the unique musicality of great guitarists.

I like the more calm version in Sanel Redzic´s version best. The music comes best to its rights and the tones sound better. Besides, music - even etudes - should not be a speed contest.

Tal Hurwitz plays very well, he makes all the notes sound and has an impeccable technique, he makes all the notes sound and has an impeccable technique. However, he omitted the original ritornelli from the score. The one by Sanel Redzik seems to me the most balanced version, in the very idea of an etude. And Xingye Li's version shows good technique, but his use of dynamics, in my opinion, tarnished the performance. It should be taken into account that the etudes, as its name indicates, should not be considered as concert pieces in the sense of interpretation because they are works to develop precise techniques of each instrument.

@marceloc1810
@marceloc1810 3 жыл бұрын

It does once you are more advanced with the right-hand control. Not only the thumb, but nails on other playing fingers also help to get a more projected, defined, and less muffled tone. Imagine replacing the tension of the string being released by the soft flesh of the fingertip versus a solid, plastic-like nail.

Xingye Li's had potential, but I think the consistent high tempo (while impressive) got in the way of connecting any of the dynamics or phrasing ideas together. I prefer Tal Hurwitz's interpretation, a sort of Goldilocks of the three. Tal Hurwitz > Sanel Redzic > Xingye Li
