@@Bird_McBride The keyword here is 'former'. After the dissolution of the USSR, Ukraine (as well as many other countries) was internationally (including russia) recognised as a separate sovereign state. NATO is not an expansionist organisation, and no one is forced, or coerced, to join (e.g. Sweden and Finland). However many countries were particularly wary of russia, as russia has a tendency to invade their neighbours. So for protection many countries joined NATO. If Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania hadn't joined NATO they would probably already have been invaded by those who wish to reinstate the 'former' territories of the USSR. It's not meddling, it's just that people prefer to live in a western style democracy, rather than a mafia led dictatorship. Life is simply better in the west, that's why most russian oligarchs, and those in power, send their children to study there, and own villas and yachts there. The RF focuses all its wealth in moscow and st petersburg, rural russia is living in the stone age - no roads, jobs, shops, medical facilities, gas, electricity, or inside toilets. Piece of advice for you - sell all your rubles now, cos hyperinflation is coming (remember the 90's).

@11:50 your guest speaker is wrong about the U.S. & Germany blocking Ukraine's ascension into NATO. The fact is that the NATO Charter specifically states that no Nation can join it while actively engaged in a conflict. The same as Trump could not pull the U.S. out of starting on Day-1 of his Presidency as there first must be a declaration of intent made to do so and then there is a 1-year waiting period, that is also written into the NATO Charter.
@phillee28143 ай бұрын
There is nothing to prevent NATO from offering membership conditional upon the ending of hostilities, which would mean the membership would be activated as soon as peace was achieved, without any further vote. Most members are in favour of that, or a very similar offer, being made. The US and Germany are not. That prevents NATO from underwriting any peace with membership because membership would lag so far behind any peace deal. So as a simplified version, yes, the US and Germany are blocking it.

Maybe I'm stupid, but that doesn't explain why the USA and Germany are blocking Ukraine. Please explain why to me.

Did Russia not occupy over 20% of Ukrainian territory, so if they now say only have 17% they haven’t gained anything but lost territory. With regard to the EU they will become self reliant, for the simple reason that the US is unreliable. So basing Russias future on Trump would be unwise.because the gamble Russia took in western fatigue didn’t work out for Russia.
