Part of the problem is that decorative chrome is a very labor intensive process. First the steel surface has to be polished to a mirror finish. Then it's a multiple step process, first a caustic cleaning, then a nickle plating, then a copper plating with cleaning and additional polishing between each surface and then a thin flash of soft chrome. Yes, soft chrome because it needs to be able to flex and bend. Hard chrome can't be put on thin steel that will bend . These are two different materials.

This has been coming for years and its not just in the EU and there are perfectly good replacement methods to achieve the bling factor, switching from the current hexavalent chrome plating to trivalent chrome delivers the same level of finish and protection while significantly reducing toxic substances used. The main drawback of the trivalent method is that it can’t yet be used to manufacture the hard chrome required for aerospace components, for example. This, however, is largely irrelevant in the context of automotive styling, as large manufacturers can simply make the switch from hexavalent to trivalent chrome once the ban is enacted. Aerospace firms, meanwhile, could well be given special exemptions that allow them to continue to manufacture hex chrome until a viable alternative is developed for certain components.

Thank you, Stuart. I’ve been busy fighting the EUs and of course our home generated misinformation, such as on the safe & effective injections. So my hobby, vintage Suzuki GT380/750 have been ignored. I didn’t know about the chrome ban. Apart from the control & irritation aspects, what a shame. Those final, top quality chrome platers I’ve helped keep in business must have recently closed. I’m lucky to have had chromed a remanufactured full set of pipes for my Kettle in my loft, along with a set of chromed Allspeeds from Holland and a couple of NOS outers for my little 380. But the other bits I was always going to get done later & never did, like the rare single stanchion (sp?) front mudguard for the 380. I remember being chuffed to have won it on ebay a decade ago and I often find that lightweight box, saying to myself, “I must send that off somewhere”. Unless I can persuade someone it’s a mudguard from a Messerschmidt, that’s not getting chromed. It’s definitely being done to degrade our lives, because that’s all the EU is for. I think you’re correct in that there are no practical alternatives for several critical applications. The end of hard chroming effectively ends the motorcycle restoration business completely, because in most cases, a functional as well as aesthetic restoration usually involves sending your fork legs off for grinding back, hard chroming and then precision fine grinding to finished exact size to a fraction of a thousandth of an inch as well as straightening them as part of the process. If you cannot get this done, the bike cannot be done to the highest spec. I will be treating the two pairs of perfect fork legs I have at present like the irreplaceable objects they now are. One minor off and that’ll be the end of the bike. I might buy someone else’s very nicely restored bike, just to have a source of nicely chromed parts I can filch, but that’s not an option for most people or the rest with any sense. I’m stubborn like that. Your wider point is well taken. In numerous applications there really isn’t a good alternative. Nickel plating is inferior and was superseded by chrome plating about a century ago. Yes, it’s particularly nasty stuff in solution, but like you, I’m extremely dubious about the environmental gains from banning it & estimate those gains as too small to be calculable. Exempting aerospace is breathtaking, isn’t it? I’m making a bet that Formula 1 is going to be classified as aerospace, with some justification, as engineering standards have been equivalent if not higher for all of its existence. And of course, those private jets to convey his & her nibs from a G20 to the annual WEF meeting in Switzerland, to COP whatever, to “Summer Davos” (did you know these have exclusively been held in China for many years?) via Monaco for the Grand Prix surely mustn’t be interrupted in any way. They actually land at Nice airport, where we own a modest gaff and around the local F1 shindig, the waves of very expensive executive jets parked side by side extends halfway down the Promenade des Anglais, followed by furious helicopter shuttles to Monaco. Do you know if the chrome used in Porsche nikasil plated bores is likely affected? If so, they will not be able to use completely aluminium blocks any more and will need to use pressed-in cast iron liners (or said liners cast-in to the ally blocks in manufacture). That’ll also mean all European spec GT550LMAB motors needing very expensive modifications to any cylinders where Nikasil is damaged. It probably won’t matter, because bike restoration will anyway have stopped. I’ll say absolutely nothing about pandemics or anything safe & effective, because I don’t want this post deleted, though it probably will be anyway, because the cockroaches who moderate YT don’t like me (the feelings mutual, you idiotic traitors!). Interesting factoid - One of the reasons why plumbing products are often chrome plated is that when un-plated brass comes into contact with a damp or wet atmosphere it starts to produce a green waxy deposit called 'Verdigris', which has highly toxic biocidal properties.. An indication of just how extremely toxic Verdigris is was discovered during an archaeological dig on the World War One battlefields of the Somme which was tasked with trying to find evidence of the infamous 'first day'.. In some areas the diggers kept finding fired brass bullet casings (British), obviously this is not at all unusual on World War One battlefield digs, but each one of these was laid on a small patch of what looked like straw. Of course we normally think of the Somme being a shell-blasted muddy 'moonscape', but on the 'first day' parts of the battlefield were actually still covered in long grass, Archaeologists realised that the small patches of 'straw' under each spent bullet casing were in fact flattened down grass that the bullet casings had landed on just after being ejected from a rifle and which had probably been buried almost immediately with soil blown out of shell craters. These patches of grass had then been prevented from rotting for almost 100 years by the biocidal effects of the Verdigris that had formed on the brass bullet casings, meaning that the casings were indeed very probably fired on the 'first day' of the battle..

The European Commission granted authorisations for five uses of chromium trioxide in December 2020, including functional chrome plating and surface treatment. The current authorisations expire in September 2024, but authorisation holders can re-apply by submitting a review report to ECHA by March 2023. The European Parliament took legal action against the Commission in March 2021 to annul the decision, saying it is in breach of EU regulation. The legal process is ongoing. When you understand that MEP's hardly ever know what they are voting on, who knows what legislation gets passed at the Brussels Club. I am surprised that the motor manufacturer lobby hasn't been busy to kick this one down the road, giving a few 'incentives' to the bureaucrats to forget this particular crusade. With the present financial problems across Europe, I would have thought trade and particularly supply chain security, would be of utmost importance so banning an industrial process instead of maybe adding more protections, is a dim witted approach, but that's bureaucracy for you.

Great video! I love the look of chrome. Just look at a 1964 S Series Jaguar in the sunlight - glorious! The trouble with chrome today is that the quality has decreased significantly from the "old days". Modern chrome plating doesn't last unless you spend countless hours cleaning and polishing the wheels. My Triumph 1200 Speedmaster started to rust after a couple of years especially the wheel rims. Similarly my 2019 Bullet Trials is showing signs of corrosion on the rims despite being regularly washed and polished and stored in a ventilated shed. So I am not too fussed about the probable end of chrome.

To paraphrase yourself at 6:59 - "It became so prohibitively expensive for (Safe Chrome plating) businesses to run that all chrome plating was moved to Asia where environmental and health protection is less of a concern". I would be concerned that you are balancing your desire to have shiny motorcycle parts against the health and wellbeing of tens of thousands of people in Asia, and justifying this desire by saying "This is about policing the rest of the world". In this case I would argue that we are not policing the rest of the world - China and India are free to continue to produce as much unsafe chrome plating as their internal markets will demand until their governments realise the health concerns and ban it too. This is about prohibiting the sale in Europe.

RE have already addressed the chrome plating ban by introducing their range of black finished motor cycles over the last few years. Bob Black has also addressed the issue with his black bobber. We recovered nicely from eliminating asbestos from every day materials, thus saving many future generations from horrible deaths, having had to work with it. So I’m sure that we’ll all come to accept replacements for chrome plating, in the knowledge that we’re not poisoning waterways and areas of sea, and ultimately our own food sources. There will be suitable replacements, even if they haven’t been developed yet. Necessity will drive this.

Morning Stewart. 2017 my old mate just finished rebuilding his 1981 or 1982 Harley Sportster when this announcement came out. He called me to chat about this. Why, because of the wheel and engine bearings he just fitted. As we chatted that day I remember saying that this ban must have exceptions. Because if not, ships, wind turbines and power station turbines shafts would soon grind to a halt, literally! John passed away in 2020 just before my wife. He kept telling he could find no published data to support this pending ban. Nor what harden chrome bearings would be replaced by? And as for John, myself and many old mates no longer with us... We're a huge fan of chrome. Made our motorcycles stand out once a rebuild was completed. That's why we were once big fans of them old bike mags like Back Street Heroes. Even some of them spray jobs were to die for! So how long before certain known toxic paints will be banned causing more problems for industry??? Brilliant vid again Stewart so in the mean time, safe cruising sir 👍😊. Now I will read the comments other have left 🤘...

The Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive 2002/95/EC was the start the ban but as you noted there were exception. In the turbo-machinery industry sector hard chrome was used as a repair process to journal and seal areas of turbine and compressor shafts as an alternative to repair by welding. Repair by hard chrome of seal areas fell out of favour during the 90's with welding becoming the dominant repair process. Since late 2000 HVOF spraying has gained favour for repair.
