@Preston Jones that's a pretty good idea. Although might need some special mechanics considering you get 10 authority every emperror election and most popes in the game start pretty old. And the papacy should be able to form Rome as the "already considers themselves Rome" argument doesn't hold up if Byzantium can form Rome aswell.

I like the idea of keeping your borders inside Italy and then expanding out with vassals. Using vassales to funnel trade into your trade nodes. Turning them all into powerful Marches.

Also, if you have enough war score when vassalising nation, use revoke cores on your provincies or on provincies which you take from them for lower their liberty desire and negative opinion (2nd war with Naples).

You should at the new three god privilegs for the clergy, nobility and for the burghers ( "clerical education" , "Grant Court Positions" and "Allow Burghers Econmic Freedom" ). Thats three nobrainers, that helps a lot, especially new Players :) @theRedHawk

I believe excommunication CB only gives reduced AE on the provinces you border/have claims on- you can see that all the other provinces cost you diplo for unjustified demands and therefore are at normal AE.. So you might want to take Molise rather than Lucania or some other province.

Hey Red, while I've noticed you shape some estates to fit the nature of certain events or opening situations, do you feel these are the "best" set or do you lean into them because they're what you're most comfortable playing with? I recognized the value of upping mana points early but sometimes I wonder if there aren't more or slightly different estates, especially with new ones, that would potentially improve your runs. At least it might vary the experience, as I have found. Would you consider putting a guide or opener together that would explain alternative builds so that we can enjoy your research of in game flow alongside more varied gameplay?

Having +1 mana point in each category since the beginning of the game is really strong. Especially if you keep estates weak and conquer some land. Easy crown land. And while the autonomy debuff isn’t great from low crownlands you can manage it fine as well.

There is the holy trinity in each Estate +1 mana advisor discount the Influence scaling one. Those three you want pretty much every the time. There are other good ones, you also always take, but these are the most important ones.

Naples seems to want me to like it, and so keeps improving relations -- by the time it finally fires in a few years, my opinion of Naples is too high to excommunicate! Any advice to make Naples not so friendly? I've set my attitude to hostile and marked all their land as vital interest already...

I had the similar problem. The king of Aragon stayed alive until 1500s, and when Naples became independent, they didn't want to rival me anymore. This happened like three times, so eventually I gave up and killed the aragonese ruler using console. Naples immediately allied Savoy and bought an indulgence, so I couldn't excommunicate them. This is awful

When the Renaissance spawns you should appoint a cardinal in the country that spawns it, that way the cardinals start spreading institutions immediately

Considering I have had EU4 since the day it came out, it is my most played game on Steam (over 2300 hours, which I know isn't a ton), somehow, I have never played as the PayPal State. I think I have played every other nation in Italy at least once, even the hated Venetians. Yet never the Pope. Maybe now is the time, though I'm still playing as a tall Holland/Netherlands (now as Emperor and with PU on Austria), and an unfinished Angevin run that is likely to be lost to time.

Isn't it easy to get rid of excommunication by buying indulgence? If you excommunicate Provence at game start, they'll do that immediately, which buys them 5 years before another excommunication. Besides Provence, there aren't many that can be targeted since most countries buys indulgence...

If I declare on Naples with the subjugation cassus belli I find myself in a situation where I can't claim any provinces without also forcing them to be vassalised. Then I'm in a situation where I cant drop their liberty desire, it seems like and eventually after 20 years or so they get someone to support their independence and we're at war. I don't understand? There is no way you can use the subjugation cassus belli in the first war with them. Right?

Why did you call ecumenical council instead of appointing cardinals for invested influence? Appointing cardinals is effectively free when you are curia controller as it uses the curia treasury.

Just did that myself, the subjugate cb is weird and doesn't allow you to take provinces without also vassalization as part of the peace deal. So if you use the subjugate cb at start, it's 90 warscore and you can't take any provinces like Napoli for the trade center and monument.

Naples gets an event with multiple options to choose when Aragon releases them and the AI randomly chooses between the one Red Hawk got and the one you got.

Possibly not optimal, but I like opening with Espionage for the Papal States for the AE reduction, then going Divine for the siege bonus with Espionage, and later Offensive. You can beat up small nations so easily and no one cares, then by the time big countries are in your crosshairs you have a ridiculous siege bonus.

It's very much optimal. Especially in late game. you can stack to 100% siege ability. Late game cancer level 8 forts is a major slowing factor. Italy has lot of money. And pope is special so Mana isn't a big problem. You don't have to do admin till much later in game.

Great video! But why would you get the cheaper advisor estate agendas? It‘s a waste of Admin before you stab up. Same goes for the decision from having a Theologian advisor. I tried this. Naples paid me tithe. So i liked them too much and coundlt excomunicate them. I wasnt powerful enough to fight them 1v1. So i had to wait to fight them. Then spain pu'd them. Then france pu'd Milan, and took luca, they also took all of Provence. And on top of that. I got warned by the ottomans. :(

BTW, you start with 5% professionalism; slacken recruitment at the start, and hire four infantry instead of hiring the Free Company. Keep the Free Company in reserve if you expect to fight a tough war.
