A powerful cyclone has hit the Philippines archipelago. The European Commission has been funding disaster risk reduction projects in the country for 18 years. Made up of hundreds of islands, the Philippines witnesses over 20 typhoons a year on average, not to mention earthquakes and volcanic eruptions which affect various regions.
The Commission's Disaster Preparedness Programme (DIPECHO) has focused on better preparing communities to recurring natural disasters, while also advocating for improvement of disaster risk management policies and practices. This video is part of a series from the 'Scaling Up Resilience in Governance' (SURGE) project, which highlights some of the best disaster risk reduction practices involving the community in some of the most vulnerable areas of the country. Funded by the European Commission, SURGE is implemented by a consortium comprising of Christian Aid, Handicap International, Oxfam and Plan International.
