For the last 18 years, the European Commission has been funding Disaster Risk Reduction projects in the Philippines - one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. Made up of hundreds of islands, the country witnesses over 20 typhoons a year on average, not to mention the regular earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that affect various regions. In this context, the Commission's Disaster Preparedness Programme (DIPECHO) has focused on better preparing communities to recurring natural disasters, while also advocating for improvement of disaster risk management policies and practices. This video is part of a series from the Scaling Up Resilience in Governance (SURGE) project, which highlights some of the best inclusive community-based disaster risk reduction (ICBDRR) practices in some of the most vulnerable areas in the country. Funded by the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO), SURGE is implemented by a consortium comprising of Christian Aid, Handicap International, Oxfam and Plan International.
