My Dad worked for Standard Oil,....they always had their company picnics there. Those were the best years of my life!

Great memories of this place. My grandparents used to live right around the corner. I remember going there and riding the big rocket cars, the merry go round, and something like a butterfly with a big wing up front that you could use to steer the ride. That was 50 years ago, and I remember it like it was yesterday. Great memories of a much better time.

Back in the late 1930's my mom would take my brother and I every year to Euclid Beach and that was one time only! We lived on the west side on 58th St. and had to ride buses and street cars to get there. It seemed to take half the day to get there but once there we had a great time. As I recall mom would take about $10, which was a LOT of money in those days, to spend on us. I think the Flying Turns was my favorite ride. And the ice cream was phenominal! Many, many fond memories!

Here's the truth. 50 years later nothing of my childhood remains. Crawford Elementary School-leveled. Prospect Elementary School-leveled. Kirk Jr. High School-leveled, Shaw High School (as I knew it) leveled (along with its many athletic trophies), Original apartment on East 81st leveled. Apartment in East Cleveland-boarded up. Shaw Ice rink-gone, Shaw road swimming pool-gone, Shaw Hayden theater leveled. East Cleveland as a safe place to live--destroyed. Euclid Beach Park-gone forever. It's a sad when you try to remember what supported your youth and comforted your family. All of it gone.

I moved to Cleveland in 1972, just three years after the park closed. It is hard to run an operation in a very bad neighborhood, especially after dark. People just can't go where they fear for their safety. They had to close. Nobody was coming out anymore. The hoodlums took over. Too bad. It is always the hoodlums that spoil it for everyone.

My mother, who just passed away this August, use to live in the apartments that are there now. Years ago, she told me,' it was at Euclid Beach Park, where her and my father met. He was a ride operator, the 'Rotor' and apparently she rode it and when she did, she "split her pants and it was him, that took her to the infirmary/lost and found(?) to get them pinned up" And I guess from that point on, the dated and got married.

A lost part of Ohio History. Great memories was a child going to the park with my grandmother when her job TAPCO had company picnics.. Those were the good days of my childhood.
@woodstockmarine54399 жыл бұрын
Company picnics were commonplace there - all the major employers had their company picnics there. Addressograph, Euclid Machinery, TAPCO, Lincoln Electric. And the legends used to frighten us kids - the Rocket Ship that flew off into the lake, the flying scooter that landed over by the carousel and the Laughing Fat Lady that could put a curse on you if you said she was ugly. Before there was violence and decay - there was Euclid Beach where for 3 five cent tickets you could ride almost anything. We lived in the projects on Briardale - and we were lucky enough to have a relative that worked at Addressograph so we got to go once a year.

Grew up in the projects on Woodland Avenue, then our family moved to Garfield Heights in 1951. Visited Euclid Beach many, many times from the late 40's to the early 60's. Now I'm 80 yrs. old and live in White Salmon, WA in the great Columbia Gorge. I'm proud to be from Cleveland and still follow the Browns and the Guardians

My cousin David Burton and his sister Faith used to go every Summer with their parents and told us great things and stories about it too. It looked like a lot of fun if that to go to if it was still open for the Summer Season. I only remember going to Chippawhaa Lake Park over in Minda county with them and some others of my family members also I really remember the great from there I felt so very sad when I heard that the park closed and it never opened up again ever again. I loved Chippawhaw Lake. Thanks for the fond memories of the parks and with everything else to take care now from Susan Iseman from Upstate New York near Albany New York.

Nice video. I spent many happy hours there as a kid. Now, like so many other good things in Cleveland, it's gone. I moved to California in 1966 and never looked back. I could see Cleveland was already going downhill. I grew up in Maple Heights and Bedford. I never thought they would be destroyed also. It's just too depressing even to go back there now. Terrible.

My family left Cleveland in 19sixty and moved to beautiful San Diego. People always say to be proud of where you come from, but I usually say I'm from Ohio. The crime and poverty that is in this city, is like nothing I ever saw in San Diego. I now live in Florida and love it. No bumper to bumper traffic, and I live oceanfront which I could never afford in Ca. I do have fond memories of Euclid Beach and summers spent on Lake Erie in Sheffield Lake.

HI Carol What's happened to Cleveland is very unfortunate. It has already gone past the tipping point. Except for some downtown hipster housing, there's no chance Cleveland will suddenly attract more people and start to grow again. As you wrote, Cleveland's reputation is so bad that people will turn down job offers rather than move there. The only places left with low crime, relatively low property taxes, and a decent quality of life are out in the third and fourth ring suburbs like Brecksville, Rocky River, and Solon. If you're lucky enough to also work at a company with an office in those suburbs, life can be pretty good. You only have to go into Cleveland for things like sports or the casino. Of course, you still have to deal with the weather which is some of the worst in the country for a major city. I left California in 2005 because I could see California turning into a warm version of Cleveland. I now live in a small town in the Deep South, and it's the best move I ever made after escaping from Cleveland in the first place.

My great grandmother emigrated to Cleveland from Ireland in the late 1880's. She was illiterate and worked for the Humphrey family as a laundress, right on the grounds of Euclid beach park. Mr. Humphrey knew this hard working woman was supporting a disabled husband and 3 small children. Never once did he say "here are some passes bring the kids out.' What a guy!

My parents went here on their first date...their last day of school their sophomore year in 1963 Rhodes High School in Cleveland. They were married in 1967 at Corpus Christie Catholic Church. They were married for 44 years until my father's death in 2012. Apparently, Euclid Beach Amusement Park was a fabulous first date that lasted a lifetime!

0:33 - Same as Cedar Point, here is a beach on Lake Erie. -but- Cedar Point was more of a 'get away' from Cleveland city, and Cedar Point can draw visitors from the big city of Detroit.

Would have been nice to see some more recent photos. My grandmother worked in one of the ticket booths and we went every year for the American Legion picnics. Went every year until it closed. The book is also a hard one to find, but there is one out there. If any one knows where this book can be located please let me know. Granny had her picture in it. Thanks for the memories Euclid Beach!

It's funny how people would dress up for an amusement like they're going to church or a more formal social event. Suits, hats, dresses and heels...simply amazing. People don't really dress up for anything these days...not even to go to places they should dress up for. Not that I would want to wear a suit to an amusement park but it was definitely a classier and more conservative time back then.
