What is wrong with Hungarian leaders? Always taking the wrong and defeated side? History is full of examples. Hungary was in the defeated side in the WWI. Afterwards willingly joined the Nazis in the war efforts and perpetration of the Holocaust. Then, as a satellite of the USSR, rebelled and saw the USSR tanks crashing the rebellion and killing Hungarians on the streets of Budapest. Eventually, Hungary was gracefully granted a place in the EU, for which it did not have to struggle. When we thought the Hungarian curse had ended, here comes a authoritarian fascist leaning government again attracted to the wrong side flirting with defeat. Instead of joining ranks with all the other countries in the EU, Hungary is getting hand in hand with the criminal authoritarian kleptocracy in Russia, abandoning and rubbishing democratic and legality values so dear to the European Union. No good will come out of that for the Hungarian people. Again Hungarians can expect another historical round of humiliations, defeatism and shame. Time to wake up Hungary! We are in the XXI Century.

However, my interpretation, I admit, is that there is something strange and dark, perhaps sinister, in Hungary closeness to defeats and its embracing of wrong sides. Yes, we may admit the complexities of history. Perhaps the uprising against the Soviet Union was a justifiable thing to do, but the defeat was clearly inevitable. So, it looks like Hungarian story is made of bad choices either for the “intrinsic badness” of the adopted side or because it lead to defeat. The other option is to paint the whole thing as Hungary being the misfortunate victim of history. This option is not convincing at all. What the current Hungarian government is doing cannot be justified in terms of victimhood; if Hungary is victim of anything, is of its own government.
