Great video. I'm someone who started lifting while very lean (6% bf) and the progress was painfully slow because I was obsessed with staying that lean. Once I started a proper bulk a few months ago my progress improved greatly. It's still slow, since I'm still quite lean, but I'm getting steadily stronger. People need to realize that to live healthily you need to have a reasonable amount of body fat, shreds be damned.

As you mentioned, it highly depends on the sports/activities you're practicing. If you're specializing in sprinting for example, you will naturally have to be a lot leaner for peak performance, whereas a weight lifter would actually benefit from having a bit more fat. The weight started to add on when I met my long-term boyfriend in 2016 - I like to call this 'happy weight.' I used to climb and trained hard in college and felt "healthy" but in reality I was only at that smaller size because I was a broke college student that lived off of coffee, nicotine and barely ate. Now at this new heavier weight, I'm a lot stronger albeit I should still shred a few pounds. Thanks for the great, honest content Eugene!

yo the trick is to do extremely low intensity cardio, like walking or just shooting a basketball. if you work more intense in the same time you burn more carbs, but not much more fat. high intensity will increase your metabolism, so your body is prepared for 0-60 but wont slowly burn off the fat, and its arguably less predictable so your body will try to keep some reserve for the random 0-60

such an important video! Martial artist here, was already quite lean at around 70kg, went down to 66kg for a fight (15 years ago since I was this light), did it gradual over 2.5 months. Its summer now, I live next to the ocean, I train and walk around without a shirt. Never ever in my life got so many compliments, and comments often allude to some form of "physique peak", I look absolutely shredded... my gym results has slumped, I feel weak, and sub-perform when fighting (but I do also suffer from overtraining, which probably also is correlated)... I look back to a few years ago when I look a bit similar to eugene, and remember how I felt like, maaan I dont even look like I train, when in fact both gym results and stamina was at peak... its not fun, but it how it works for most ppl.

Pre covid i was about 69.5kg, able to do 12-15 pull ups in a set, 30 pushups and 20 dips. I felt really fit and quite lean. When all the gyms closed and the local parks as well, i gained a ton of weight because i wasn't working out anymore. Since then I've gained over 20kg in pretty much straight up fat. 2 months ago i started my fitness journey again, and ive progressively been getting stronger. I can now do about 20 pushups in a set, and i'm able to do bodyweight pull ups again, but here's the kicker. Im still about 90kgs. My arms and chest have ballooned up more than they were when i was leaner, and i'm feeling stronger and fitter every week. I'm working on my jogging as well, being able to run about 2 kms before needing a break at the moment. I feel slimmer, and more muscular, but my weight is still >90kg. And it's just nothing i've ever experienced. Putting my body through this kind of stimulus with this added bodyweight is making me stronger than I ever have been before, and yet I look nowhere near as good as I did before. There's definitely some truth in what you've mentioned here. I think the trick is to balance this so you're getting stronger but still happy with how you look.

I once had fear of bulking too much or increasing too much body fat while bulking. However, I have overcome this fear since few months and the progress in the gym is amazing. My body might not look like it viewing from naked eye but the energy levels are at peak and I can lift alot more weight and do more exercises without getting extremely tired. I still get exhausted after heavy exercise but the stamina recovery is very quick and energy levels are at peak. This approach is great for the people who want to build muscle and they might even hit new PR's with the new energy levels. Thank you Eugene for making this video and clarifying this topic for everyone including me because first when I started, I didn't know about this channel and had to apply to myself first to actually find out the myths and facts.

Might be helpful to mention that in that study the "low" calorie group was eating ~4500 cal/day and the high calorie group was eating ~6000 cal/day. The study only lasted 6 weeks but in that time the high calorie group gained approximately 9 times as much fat (and about 2.5x as much muscle). I'm very much in favor of eating at a caloric surplus to maximize muscle hypertrophy, then cutting to reduce the fat acquired in the process, but I don't think this study is the one I would choose to justify it to the maingainers.

First time commenting on one of your videos. This is a bit of a personal story. In my younger years, I chased the shredded look. I'd even get it for some time, but something funny would always happen: I'd have a cheat day, that would turn into a cheat weekend, and then a cheat week, and then end up being a cheat month. Past that point it wasn't even a cheat; it was just an unrestricted diet. It took me far too long to realize that shredding was screwing with me mentally and I was chasing something only one part of my body actually wanted, and that was my eyes. Eventually I realized I was never going to be competing in bodybuilding and asked myself why I was putting myself through all that torture for a weekend at the beach. I still cut now. But I view the process differently. Cutting isn't for aesthetic purposes. It's to prime myself for the next phase of strength gaining. This is a video a younger me could have really used. Hope the message resonates with your fans.

As someone who has been 'maingaining' since 2016 (which was 5 years into lifting for me), i definitely have made a super minimal progress since then. The only things that have changed are maybe the way certain muscle groups look a bit harder & more vascular at around the same bodyweight as back then.
@luciniho1 Жыл бұрын
The biggest reason for that is probably that you're very close to your muscle building potential, if you've been lifting for 5 years.
@grumpyoldman6503 Жыл бұрын
@@luciniho1almost certainly not. 5 years is not a long time for lifting (especially if you are speculating about a "natural limit") and "maingaining" is just running to standstill if hypertrophy is your end goal. You need a (significant) surplus of calories to grow. You can push much further than most realize or are willing; at least until your age starts to catch up with you. People tend to overestimate what can be done in a year of consistent work and underestimate what can happen in 10. Fear of losing abs is a definite thing holding back typically younger/novice lifters mind-poisoned by social media. That or they think they need to hop on gear to break the rules of biology.
@luciniho1 Жыл бұрын
@@grumpyoldman6503 There's absolutely zero reasons for people to be in a heavy surplus for an extended period of time. It's very unhealthy, for various different reasons, and you won't build nearly enough muscle to justify it - compared to being at maintenance, or being in a small surplus. And to your other point - you will not make any substantial gains, over a yearly basis, if you have strength trained seriously for 5+ years. While maybe not at your peak, progress will be sloooow once you've been training for that amount of time.
@grumpyoldman6503 Жыл бұрын
@@luciniho1 "heavy" surplus is subjective (and I said "significant" for the record). Usually in the range of 300 to 400 calories over maintainence is recommended for a "clean bulk", but YMMV depending on how much of a food measuring nazi you can tolerate. Bullshit 60 calorie main-gaining isn't going to cut it because inputs and outputs are not perfectly accounted for on the daily. No one is that perfectly calibrated. As to you hit peak mass after 5 years of training? Laughable bullshit spawned of PED fueled over estimation of gains that have warped minds and expectations via social media. Past "noob" gains? Likely. Anywhere near where you can end up with sustained effort even as a natty? Hardly. If you want to maintain your abs, good on you. If you want to grow? You have to eat. If you then want to look good on the stage or the beach? Then cut slowly and keep your protein intake higher while continuing to lift. Tried and true methods...

I went on this experiment over the last year: no matter what, gain exactly 3 lbs per month of weight on the scale and workout hard. All my lifts blew up, thankfully not the fat (only a manageable amount). 2 to 3 lbs seems to be the sweet spot. Reality is the body can only add a max amount of muscle per month, no matter how hard you train and how much you eat.

Studies show that the right intense music stimulation can increase motivation to pump out 1-2 extra reps per set. This requires songs with slow buildup for maximum intensity, quiet moments that maintain the mood, complicated rhythms and song structures to increase muscle confusion, and interesting existential lyrics to ponder between sets. Great video. People are too stuck on getting fatter and they end up looking the same and lifting the same weights year after year. I see it in the gym all too much. Either you’re bulking or you’re cutting. Have goals in different phases.

Great video. To me the cut also means losing muscle and strength along with the fat. If you don't want that deal, then the only option is to escew the sixpack look and keep progressing in strength. When you are strong enough then you can afford to lose both fat and strength. Thanks Eugene.

such a good video, I try and bulk during the winter, and cut down as it gets warmer. I got up to 230 pounds this winter, and I haven't been that high since college. I try and make sure I do power work in addition to trying and get bigger, as I'm trying to train for long drive golf tournamnents.

i see you wearing the newest polyphia merch, you sly dog. Love the vids man, this one really sends a positive message, you have to eat to gain muscle mass and youre never gonna look shredded if youre bullking properly

Great nuanced view on the subject. Thanks for sharing. I’d conclude that there is a time and place both for leangaining and traditional bulking depending on your particular goals. E.g bulking for higher, raw muscle output differences and leangaining for a more aesthetic gaining phase.

The goal is to surplus more on days you workout and maintenance on days you don't. Protein consumption after a workout showed more muscle gain and lower cortisol and inflammation responses than those who consume protein before. In another study those who eat proteins later in the day tend to have less hair mass than those who eat it in the mornings. It's because while sleeping your body is most active. So when you wake up from not eating for over 7hrs (bcz 6hrs of sleep is insane and you need to see a doc) your body will need to "refeed" in order to maintain optimal performance. We needs good fats to increase testosterone levels and optimized muscle gain. But your body adjust on maintenance which is normally lower in fats overall. So when surplusing you're feeding more material to create Testosterone. Which is why you gain more mass quicker. But gaining too much fat causes chronic disease like nafl or heart disease from hypertension. So when consuming fats you should focus on the source. As saturated fats does more harm than good.
