@war and truth great work on this. Such an honor given to this man. That was well earned. One of the hardest part of the pacific was seeing the father consoling his son when they returned home. The horrors and things these heroes endured is beyond belief.

I Read his book at least 5 times . One episode : Either Peleliu or Okinawa . Fellow Marine , "reduced" ... grounded down to almost sub - reptile Existence . Heartbreaking . Mind blowing . The Real Horror . Read and learn something , as I did . So Obscene , it makes this grown man cry just thinking about it . Involved a Japanese soldier with 2 broken arms , a big , fat K-Bar knife , and gold fillings . 'Nuff' said .

I have read “With the Old Breed” and it was a touching and human look at the true horrors of modern warfare. How the few months of horror can influence a human for the remaining decades of their life.

At age 69 and the observer of many wars, and a researcher of many others, it seems to me that the people who start wars never fight in them. My heart hurts for all those people of all nations that had to live the horrors of war.

Read his book and watched the series, yes he was a very gentile man, almost too gentile for combat. I think it is a reflection of his inner strength that he survived the horrors of combat, and was able to keep the "gentile" man inside.

Sledge's wife was/is very beautiful. I think the photo @ 6.01 is with his Mom (looks very much like the lady standing next to his Dad @ 1:14). Thank you for including how Sledge tried to deal with his memories. Doc Phillips seemed to have done much better with PTSD. Doc Phillips said he refused to let the war get to him (Phillips), but that Eugene just could not let it go. Doc Phillips's sister was a force of nature in her own right and very supportive of these guys. The South is so different from New England in this regard. I think Dr Sledge did what he could to fight his personal battle with PTSD. In some part of him, I think Sledge felt that by letting go of the pain of war, that he would also be letting go of the memories of so many people. I have heard of the same thing from concentration camp survivors and FMPs from other wars.
@steverizley298929 күн бұрын
Comparing Sledge’s boyhood pictures to the photo @ 4:30 reminds me how much horror those guys witnessed. He is only two years older than the HS pictures but the eyes look like they’ve seen too much. God bless the warriors who served and sacrificed for this country.

Eugene's son commented on the last video I did of him. Its crazy to think their family members watch these videos. It brings home the message that works done on these men regardless of the size of the audience need to be correct and respectful. I also communicate with Don Cooper who's father (Warrant Officer JG Andrew Hill) was killed at Brecourt Manor on D-Day.

Great video! His hometown is pronounced Mo-beel, not Mo-bull. I suspect he was a gentle soul who wanted to do his duty, which he amply did. And in doing so, learned more than to contemplate hate and hatred. He could not be blamed for hating his Japanese enemy.

I read his, (A Helmet For My Pillow') book at least 35 years ago, a book I can still remember to this day. I've read just about every WWII non-fiction book, so that's saying something. The movie " The Pacific" doesn't even come close to the real story from the book.

I take it that Sledge and Phillips meeting up on Pavuvu was just another bit of "artistic licence" in the series if Sid was already back home before Eugene deployed?
@robertroth28729 күн бұрын
My understanding, from other sources, is that they actually were briefly stationed together on Pavuvu just before Phillips rotated back to the US.
