In aikido, the staff or jo is used in training, both as a weapon and as a tool for training the mind. It is important to learn to strike with the jo in a way that is both martially effective and helps focus the mind. Visit us on the web at aikidocenter.tripod.com/

Thank you. Your teaching was very clear and allowed one to really see the mechanisms of the movements.

I really liked watching the video. I agree 100% with everything he demostrated/said in the first 1 minute of the video...and then training/styles diverge. Still, that is a lot compared to what I normally see online. Nice accuracy with the tsuki! It is hard to hit a vertical target like that!

Sensai... I am starting to use a walking stick, for mobility purposes. I am presuming these moves could be used with this? I may have to modify the moves? Thanks🙏

I'm not sure what Aikido school or style this is although it goes against everything I was taught for choku tsuki, shomen uchi etc. If I bobed around like that I'd of been dropped to the ground by the sensei as a lesson. might seem harsh although unlearning bad habits is worse :-/

We can only assume Aikido because of the pants but yeah it's certainly different though not bad necessarily.

Curious about this as it's very different from the dozen videos I watched before it. As I can see from the comments below, most view this in a negative light. I on the other hand like your video but wish you'd reply to the now ancient comments... WHAT STYLE/SCHOOL is this? WHY is it so different?

cool video, but that pinky edge behind the jo only works in the dojo. otherwise its impractical and you can just end up hurting your own hand. just practice shoulder high spins to get your wrists and fingers strong and it wont slide. i could hit a person with this strike and my hands wouldnt slide when i was 9. the pinky is unnecessary

+a3faaar that is exactly what i thought when I first saw this, but then I remembered back before the dojo I trained at (though it was american tiger and we didn't have jo-staff training) we use to lean all sorts of strikes and kicks that would be painful at first, but as we strengthened out bodies and got use to the impact, we realized the strike was more effective than the "safer" variant, I understand your point, but I also wanted to point out that after conditioning your hand, the pinky endue behind the jo will make your strikes more powerful and give a better guarantee that the jo will not slip.

Too each his own, I understand what you mean but either way, you train your palm to get it hard to not slide or you train your prinky and hand hard to not slide. But if both work who cares? And yeah, I can see how having something to brace against would make it hit harder. Thanks for the info. Ill give it a try for a year or two, see if I like it better.

You don't twist your hands as you strike, this is completely incorrect. Have you ever heard of tenouchi?

this was the first thing i tought of, too. he has no real grip, but at least he understands the techniques (which does not mean that they are useful in sparring if he doesn't twist his wrist)

If you turn your jo while you grab it with just your index finger and your thumb, you make a wrong movement. The little finger and the thumb never leave the jo.

Hey mr. Joel, why do you learn wrong movement? It's better you teach at your students, in your dojo...
@EnochDark
@EnochDark 2 жыл бұрын
it's not "wrong" it's just not Aiki-jo... But then it's not labeled as such and simple called Jo STRIKES which they are.
