Eugeniusz Mossakowski: „Gdy naród do boju…!”, 1932

1932 test recording of Syrena-Electro.
‘When the nation rises to fight’ - a hymn song, also known as „Szlachta w roku 1831” ("The Nobility in 1831"), popular in the folk and socialist circles from the mid-nineteenth century.
The poem was written in 1835, its author was Gustaw Ehrenberg. A fragment of the Variation in B-flat major Op. 2 by Fryderyk Chopin on the theme of the arias from the opera Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was used as a musical base. For the first time the piece was published in the collection “Sounds of the Past", 1848 in Paris. At the same time, a clandestine edition was released in Krakow.
The message of the song condemns magnates, nobility and clergy - portrayed as the perpetrators of Poland's loss of independence. The text also refers to the events of the 1831 November Uprising.

A właśnie Jerzyku, Ptaku Mego Serca, myślałem byłem rannym wyjściem po mleko o Tobie... W tej pieśni nie są istotne odniesienia do Mozarta i Chopina... Ta pieśń ma swoje zaklęcie w słowach... dziś w Polsce... przewrotne i tragiczne niestety... Vide.. Konstanty Radziwiłł... A znałem się, a jakże, i prawiliśmy nieraz serdecznie z księżną Anną! A tu... I am unsure whether the label suggests this is a radio or private edition. It does not sound private though, because of its outstanding quality. I am unable to read well but it seems to state it formed part of the music collection of a public authority (culture department?). As for Mossakowski, he seems to be at his best in this very heroic and patriotic song. Thank you very much for sharing this rare gem!

The label looks as if it was made of the ordinary, rough, packing paper. Hand writing at the top shows the title and the name of the singer. Below, translated, it reads: Sample Record or - A Test Record. Vaguely seen shade of a stamp informs us in translation: Ministry of Culture and Art; Departament for Music. Invisible here matrix number in the shellac directs us to Syrena studio, 1932.

It seems possible that because of the kind of the repertoire - national-historic-patriotic - the manufacturer was supposed to inform the mentioned governmental Body or even receive the approval for publishing and selling such a contents.

0:04 "Najdoskonalszy instrument muzyczny, reprodukujący myzukę i śpiew naturalnie, czysto i bez szmerów" - jak kiedyś pokazałem mojemu koledze, że słucham nagrań starych utworów z lat 40/50 o znacząco lepszej jakości, to czepiał się że mu coś szumiało w tle, więc nie wiem jakby zareagował na tego typu nagranie :)

Poeta Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński powiedział, słuchając muzyki na ówczesnych płytach: wy słyszycie szumy i trzaski - ja muzykę ! Dzisiejsza moda na sterylizację dźwięku poczyniła krzywdę odbiorcom: nie wiedzą, że każda epoka rejestracji dźwięku miala swoje prawa i możliwosci, i nalezy im się szacunek i zrozumienie. Jak każdemu dokumentowi.
