What is the point of this kick? I don't see any use in self defense application or sparring. Is just to show balance and body control in a form?

There are self defense applications for this kick if you understand how the movement itself works. Done properly, your opponent may not see it coming. Another thing is that the kick doesn't have to be head height to be effective.

@@garycleveland6410 is it like a straight leg spinning hook kick kind of thing? As demonstrated in this video it's a very gentle straight leg spin and doesn't look effective at anything. Probably because of the way it is used in this form, perhaps?
@garycleveland64102 жыл бұрын
@@toddmayta7615 It is slightly different. A spinning hook kick is usually done with a flicking/ hooking motion. A stiff leg is a reverse turning kick. Both can be effective if learned and used properly.

In the pattern, its performed with the kind of speed you see in the video. In reality it's analogous to swinging your leg like a baseball bat, with the heel striking someone's head or slar plexus. A detail of this version of the technique is that it isn't aimed at a target directly in front, but rather to a target 45 degrees off to one side. It results in contact being made at a point in the movement where there is significantly more power. It is the "reverse" of the Turning Kick, which is like a round house kick aimed at a target 45 degrees to either side, typically using the ball of the foot as the attacking tool.

Sir I wanted to be snippy with my reply but pulled back. One needs to think of this kick in many ways. There are Many moving parts ALL done at the same time. Picture your body as a spring being wound up as one is turning. Once you have reached the point of Not being able to hold back... Bam, that's when the leg comes up and is delivered as the body unwinds. The side piercing is a Very powerful kick, But I think this is More because you are turning adding more mass. Also, one is gaining distance by turning and using the back leg. There's so much more to this but explaining it here is too lengthy. Trying to sum it up. Picture swinging a baseball bat, that's your leg. Some final things. Chuck Noris, look up some of his fight scenes or World sparring matches.... This Kick IS His BREAD n BUTTER kick in his movies. I Love this kick, Try stopping it if One Dares.
