I was thinking Euler's formula also applies trivially to straight side polygons, like squares and triangles, if you think of them all as having 2 faces - front and back (more obvious if you cut them out of the paper they're drawn on). Since the number of vertices and the number of edges of a polygon are always equal, that will always leave us with 2.
