I'm trying to find out if this projector can operate in a single step mode where each frame is advanced on demand by a manually operated button or, even better, by a remote electrical dry contact (switch). Please advise if you know the answer, thanks.

no thats not possible in the original setup. you should tear out the original motor and put a stepper motor inside and teh nwith controllers, (arduino) program it so it does what you want. also you would need to get another lightsource as this one wil burn your film if you stop the filmin the gate
