@Jaelyn Edwards if you want to go to japan just because of anime you will be disappointed. anime and japan are completely different, one's a fantasy and one isn't. people in japan actually shun people (weaboos) who come over just to live their anime fantasies because it's fetishizing japanese culture and it's downright wrong

This might be late, but here are a handful of questions 1. Do i have to pay for stuff like the uniform and books? Or will that be included in the fee? 2. What will they do if you get caught breaking rules? Warning or sent back early? 3. Is it ok if i dont listen in class? 4. Assuming I took a one year trip, and that finished, will I repeat a year in my country's school in the following schoolyear?

for my exchange, uniforms are not included in the fees. im not sure about books if you get caught breaking the rules you have 2 warnings, then you will be sent home. though it depends on the severity of what you did, its possible to get sent home without a warning. a lot of the time you wont have to actually participate in most classes so yes - unless they specifically ask you to pay attention to this class. im going during year 13, and when i come back i will have to do year 13 again. hope that helps?

I'm due for this August around the 17th (date not 100% yet). I'm Australian (boy) and am kinda scared of the language barrier because I've experienced it a lot through hosting Japanese students and attending my schools cultural exchange. I was wondering if you have any study advice? Also I'm in the waiting period >.> it sucks.... If anyone else reads this I was accepted with 1 failed subject soooooo dw about it :)... just, don't fail every subject or anything like that ._.

Brush up on sentence structures and casual phrases / slangs in Japan. Those will come in handy when starting conversations with people. Learn your hiragana & katakana well before learning anything else. Also, try not to memorise from books too much, try to understand every word and speak as much as possible before your departure (maybe to your Japanese friends or even to yourself). Good luck!

If you haven't already check out Yuta Aoki's channel I'd suggest doing so; Yuta is all about learning "real" Japanese rather than learning textbook Japanese. He teaches you things that a textbook wouldn't and I think that's a little more comforting than a textbook, haha! also check out Abroad in Japan's "Speaking Japanese Fluently in 6 Months" and "12 Tips for Learning Japanese." He's funny but also really helpful!

Nope, Japan was not what I expected, it turned out to be a whole new learning experience for me. I didn't really have much of an expectation as I went on exchange with an open mind. Things in real life were different from what I saw / read about online, but in a good way.

For most exchange companies, you have to be below 18 before you depart. They might give you a leeway if you turn 18 during the end of your exchange, like me. But if not, you'd be better off with university exchanges or a company like ASSE as they are alright with older exchange students. (18-19)

So, if I want to do a foreign exchange year in 10th grade, do I need to apply when I'm in the 9th? The problem I found with that is I will be 14 at the time of applying (being in the 9th grade) but when it actually comes to the trip I'll be 15. Does it matter your age when you apply as long as you are 15-17 by the time of departure? I'm assuming the wait for the response is a year or more, so that's why you'd apply beforehand. Can you go on class trips outside of your region? Can you take after school activities (example dance, swim, martial arts, etc) with a host family? Will I need to retake the year when I get back? Like, will I end up taking 5 years of high school because I took that exchange year? If so, as you know it's possible to graduate high school in 3 years. Could I technically finish the curriculum in 9th, 11th and 12th but 10th would be my unavailable year? I don't really know how to explain it clearly lol, but if you did a 3 year hs, you'd graduate in 11th grade, but instead of graduating 1 year early, just take an exchange year. Only assuming that a foreign exchange year doesn't count towards your credits. Does this information change from company to company? Like will some companies get credits from the exchange year and others won't, etc. Thank you

Yes to everything, but the 'do I have to retake it or can I study the local program and the exchange year at the same time' depends on your school and grades. Usually people retake the year though, so if you go exchange 10th and go back home then you do 10th again and move on to 11th. (Also I'm 14 and in the system, would be 15 when leaving ^^)

I just started learning some Japanese at home to get ready for high school where I will be taking 2 years of it. I'ts been really fun so far but confusing, like I'm having trouble learning to wright out the words I'm saying and understanding others when they say something. I'm really excited because I want to work really hard and get into the exchange program to go to japan. I kinda want to live there someday. It looks like so much fun and people are so nice, the food looks super cool. You even get vending machines in school!! I think the idea of the new culture looks super cool like the slippers for around the house and indoor and outdoor shoes and that you get to wear uniforms. Plus that everything is clean and orderly. SO MUCH KAWAII !! I'm afraid I won't be accepted because not everyone gets to go. And I have bad anxiety and I get super scared when people ask me questions cause I'm afraid my answer won't cut it (be good enough) or I'll say the wrong thing. And I get super scared of other people, I'm kinda paranoid and think other people are out to get me because of where I live and my school. Kids are so mean and if you glance at someone they get mad and cuss at you. Plus, if your the shy type (like me) or any different from the "popular kids" or don't wear clothes like them they target you and make fun of you or pick on you. So...I hope they are not like that in japan, then again, not the whole world is like where I live I'ts just what I'm used to. But they look really nice there. Also, when you apply like you said sometimes they won't answer for up to half a year or year, what if you're applying in like 11th grade and you won't get to go until a year later and I'ts already to late? Like you're about to graduate.

Well I am living in Luxembourg (in Europe, not a lot of people know about us since we are a pretty small country lol) and I was always wondering how I could do an exchange. I still have 2 and half year left before I'm going to university and by then I will be 20. I guess I just do an exchange when I'm in university 😂 Edit: our education system is kinda different from other countries, we learn about 4 languages in school and high school here is longer than in other countries and that's why we are mostly older than other students when we enter university.

Hello Euodias, so you went to Japan exchange for the last year of school right? How did you manage your academics (IB/A-levels) at such an intense period where you have to get good grades and apply for uni? Also- just curious, how in the world do you know sooo many languages, which uni do you go to, and what major/minor do you take?

Hm..well shyness is not what they're looking for. Try to be confident, mature and have a good command of English (or whatever language they interview you in) as much as possible. Companies are usually looking for people who are easy-going, chill, open-minded and have a sense of humour.

I've been considering going on exchange to Japan with AFS but I'm not 100% really sure yet, I'd really like to experience Japan and make new friends. @Euodias
@Euodias 7 жыл бұрын
For me it was worth it, even though I had tons of problems with AFS. Favourite part about exchange was the friends I've made of course :) But going on exchange is not the same for everyone, some hated it, some loved it and some were bored. It's also risky and dangerous, there are students who pass away on exchange as well. If you're serious about exchange, go into it with an open mind because you'd never know what's gonna happen. But it's fun to test yourself sometimes so good luck and make the best out of it :)

tip for anyone looking into an exchange: see if your city has any sister cities! i personally got super lucky in that my city has three. each year, each country sends delegates for 2 weeks to visit the other city and learn about their culture. i went on one of the trips, and when I got back, i simply contacted their local exchange office (in japanese) inquiring about whether or not they do long term exchanges. this is a really good option for those of you who don't want to pay thousands of dollars in fees!

Hi, I'm currently learning japanese and I'd recommend to learn how to read and write hiragana and katakana first. Once you learn how to read and write them with ease, you can move onto learning basic phrases and sentences structures and eventually start learning different kanji. (I hope this helps in some way)

Jimin flavored jams I just misunderstood, I apologise, but with that attitude, I don't think anyone will like you in Japan. I just made a mistake... EDIT: Hold on, I didn't misunderstand, she/he said would they either transfer to a public or private school since they're homeschooled. So, I replied with what I said above, it doesn't matter if you're home schooled, it's not your decision to choose your school. You got to be able to adapt to whatever school they give you. Also, every program is different. Some program require you to be enrolled in school and these kind of special cases like bring home schooled most likely requires you to contact the program managers. In addition, it might depend on why you're being home schooled. If you have any health problems, depression, anxiety then it might be a bit more harder to pass the application process than someone who is more healthy and have a healthy mind. Some might reject you as I've researched many programs that say you have to be both physically and mentally healthy. Sorry about the negativity above, I'm just kinda mad. I hope this helped you guys and I hope you guys don't hate me.

How long did club meetings last after school? -Were you provided with school uniforms or did you have to pay? -Did you take an extra year of high school when you returned to your original school in order to catch up? Did you take summer courses? -When you were in Japan, did you have to complete schoolwork and projects? Thanks! :D
