The thing I love about 'old' 90's/2000's tech like this is that so much of it has focus on the simple joys/quality of life improvements that are solely *fun* rather than in pursuit of further profit after the product has been purchased. Modern smartphones are engineered to addict you, and that isn't the case with these. Also, holy shit! TAIKO?!

I actually own one of these. Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do with it if you live outside of Japan. Most countries don’t use the same GSM bands which makes it really difficult to get any plan for this phone. It might be possible if you live close to Japan, maybe in Russia or China. Also, it’s rather old, so it can’t connect to wifi. It’s really only good for the purikura app, unless you live in Japan or somehow managed to get a plan for this phone outside of it.

It's actually more annoying than that - the phone has the hardware for multiple band GSM and UMTS 3G, and although the documentation claims it takes a "miniUIM" card, it's completely compatible with regular 3GPP SIMs. The problem is that they come from the factory provider locked to NTT it's hard to get them unlocked outside Japan. Even if you do get them unlocked, there are some features that simply don't work outside the DoCoMo network like i-Mode and the GPS.

They also still have those SOS calls, where if you activate it, you would go to SOS mode, and your SOS contact list would be messaged to you that you are in SOS situation and need help ASAP, really neat!

it's because the target audience of this flip phone is teenage girls, and they'll need that app to protect themselves in japan. if an older man is trying to seduce then in the streets or at a place they are alone, they can pretend to talk to papa or someone they know. it's a very very common problem in japan, please research JK culture if you're interested to knowing more.

"(携帯) Keitai" literally means "hand-portable", but it's usually short for "携帯電話 Keitai denwa" (mobile telephone). So actually, both of those phones are "keitai". "ガラケー Garakei" is short for "ガラパゴス携帯電話 Galapagos keitai denwa", which is only what they're called nowadays (not back when they were popular), and it's kind of a disparaging term. The Galapagos islands are home to many unusual and defenseless animals, because they evolved there in isolation, cut off from the rest of the world with no natural predators. Calling these old phones "garakei" (not all garakei are flip-phones, BTW) is basically saying that they developed in isolation in Japan and kind of stagnated. They were really advanced compared to what was available overseas in the 90s, but lack of competition meant that very little about them changed between then and when 3G smartphones quickly pushed them out of the market in the late 2000s.

At a marketing standpoint, flip phones can make a comeback if the demand is there. They're slept on just because it doesn't boast the latest tech, but that can be remedied given how thin and compact a lot of components are getting. I was hyped for the RAZR 2020, but folding screens aren't fully developed and it lost appeal when you see that crease in the middle. That's why the classic keypad format with physical buttons should make a comeback in a major way. One-handed speed texting used to be a thing and I'd love for that to make a comeback. tl;dr Japanese flip phones are classy af and need to make a comeback.

So next time make sure to do detoxification and have more q times with your dearest family & friends 😆❤️
@mrbrightside3440
@mrbrightside3440 3 жыл бұрын
@@sanforyouu but the technology's designed specifically to be addictive. If company's prioritised actual functionality and longevity, phones would be a lot different to the way they are now. They have so many useless features nowadays, while the battery life, physical strength and ability to work without being connected to wifi keeps going down. What can your phone actually do when it's not connected to the wifi? How many apps can you use without connecting to your email, Samsung account, apple account etc? They've made it so that phone repairs are so complex and expensive that it's cheaper and easier to just buy a new phone. Phone technology isn't prioritising ease for the user, it's just ensuring that the phone burns bright and fast enough for the user to come back and buy another one.

Flip-phones feel so much more social, when they're a norm, it feels like everyone's on the same social plane, using messages and calls. With smartphones, there are so many apps and eco-systems, so many different bubbles that we're all separated into, and they're all designed for addiction. Dumbphones however, nah, just message your friends using their number that's how everyone does it.

I love Flip phone, I had a Nokia N90 (because it looked like the one in FF7-Advent children) and everyone made fun of me because it was "big and chunky". It's really a cultural thing because here in Europe, even before touch screens were the norm, people regarded flip phones as old and out of fashion....I really love the one you have in the video.

I miss flip phones so much... They had a very special aesthetics which none can redo. And that iconic jdramas'/anime era with these awesome flip phones... even memories of that glory gives me chills. Indeed phones are too boring nowadays.

It's pretty cute and especially suitable for young girls in middle and high school, but I feel like kids who use flip phones at this time will probably get bullied at school lol. Even kids have the latest phones nowadays

I don't think you would get bullied, but probably get asked annoying questions by the kids who are close minded.

I miss the simple hello kitty flip phone I had when I was 13. They're so satisfied. I used to hang up just by closing it and I love that. Also it is kinda satisfying when you're angry at someone hahaha
