19:12 The girl in the witch costume was geassed at the beginning of the series to mark a wall every day, so Lelouch could test how long geass lasts. They're just showing the viewer that she's still doing it, it hasn't worn off even after a great deal of time.

As sub viceroy no she can’t do this on her own. But since she went around her sister and straight to Prince Schneizel who’s not only superior in Royal rank but he’s also the Prime Minister. His approval overrides anything else. Schneizel is steps ahead and knows that this zone would cripple resistance to Britannia in Area 11. It’s all window dressing.

I think with all the posturing that zero does for Japan it is very easy for people to forget lelouche’s actual motivation for everything. It has never been about Japan for him, he was always in it to get revenge on britania and the state of japan is perfect to align his goals with them. Japan getting exactly what they want without conquest over britania is actually the worst situation for lelouche because he loses his best tool. I am sure over time he has/will begin to care more about japan’s own plight but it is important to keep his core goal in mind and how his actions work to achieve that. Also technically, given the discussion in next episode his goal isn’t exactly pure revenge but without spoilers that is close enough for now.

That's right. The army he built to liberate Japan is actually just a convenient tool for his personal revenge, same as the public opinion he attempts to sway in his direction. I wouldn't say he doesn't care about Japan. I think he does want Japan to be free. But he sees it as a useful tool for his strongest desires. You could say "Free Japan" is his fifth priority. After Destroy Britainnia, create a world for his sister, avenge his mom, protect those he cares about.
@WiqidBritt

Lelouch also realizes the kind of effects this sort of compromise can have in the long run. Real world colonial powers have done similar things in the past, letting native populations maintain certain rituals or allowing them a 'free zone' of sorts while at the same time providing incentives to abandon their old culture and assimilate into a cheap source of labor. It's enough to reduce their willingness to fight but not enough for them to actually regain any true freedom in their own country.
@cadehartman2872

Important to keep in mind that Euphemia's plan is not actually creating a Japanese nation-state or fulfilling the desire for true independence among Japanese. It is simply a limited area within which they are ALLOWED to call themselves Japanese and (theoretically) exist outside of a racialized hierarchy, in actuality their newly won rights are only ensured so long as Brittania's goodwill continues. Part of Lelouche's disdain for this idea is selfish, it undercuts his ability to get revenge against Brittania after all, but it also hamstrings the Japanese cause for independence and Lelouche recognizes this as well (even though this justification is not his main issue with the plan). Some Japanese will recognize that this zone is simply an open air prison, but enough will be appeased by it that the movement for a free Japan will fall apart and lose support. Euphemia is no politician, she is ignorant and optimistic in the extreme, so she thinks this idea will work and will really help to fix the systemic issues plaguing the victims of the Brittanian empire. Schneizel, on the other hand, knows that allowing Japanese people basic civil rights within a very limited area of the nation is a small price to pay to effectively end what looks to be a potential uprising. Many people sugarcoat Euphie's idea, but it wouldn't actually fix anything, it just quells the righteous anger of large swaths of those living under Brittania's fascist regime.
@govind.m86
@govind.m86 Жыл бұрын
"but it wouldn't actually fix anything" That's simply untrue. The very existence of SAZ deflates the ideology of Social Darwinism that Britannia follows from common sense to simply the predominant policy.

For those who were curious why Lelouch was a competent Knightmare pilot, though not an excellent one, at the start of the series, the mention that he piloted his mother's Ganymede frame for the school events should be proof enough. With his intellect, he would have learned all that he could from the machine, even if he lacked the skills necessary to draw out it or any other Knightmare's true potential.

I think that's unfair. Lelouch has done well in multiple fights, especially later, he's not Kallen or Suzaku level but he's probably like the second or third best pilot in the BKs after Kallen and maybe Tohdoh.

@@sumanaiii4552 Something that most people are weirdly unaware of is that throughout history, and especially the middle ages, princesses usually were taught a good amount of the things taught to princes, if not all. At the very least, you could consistently expect them to know calligraphy, mathematics and diplomacy, but also horseriding and swordfighting/fencing. The typical fantasy princess archetype who can't do anything physical is a far cry from real historical princesses, who were expected to be able to defend themselves if all else failed. Now there's no guarantee that the show's writers were aware of that, but even if not, we can choose to apply this real world logic to their creation and expect a nation as steeped in tradition as Brittania to teach all its royal children the basics of Knightmare piloting. Whether or not that includes using weapons is up for debate, but we do know she can at least travel fast across difficult terrain from the time she tried to reach Suzaku on Shikine

@@nahte123456 When Lelouch does well in Knightmare battles, it's essentially *always* because he's in some souped-up supermachine that wins by spec alone, but requires an entirely different approach to piloting. Whenever we see him in a more baseline machine, he has close support from a full squad, and if he gets separated from them, never manages to hold his own. He's not a *bad* pilot, but he's far from the top echelon of BK pilots. His particular skillset *outside* of piloting just lends itself very well to getting the most out of their supermachines. At best, I'd put him as their 8th: Below Kallen, Todoh, the Four Holy Swords, and CC, who we see actually does most of the piloting for him in the Gawain.

And lasting against Suzaku for even a single minute at Narita was better than all 4 Swords against Suzaku once Lelouch stopped commding them. Like the Guren is also way better then the Pureblood Knightmare Frames at Narita but no one says she's a worse pilot. Also I love the Gawain but it was a prototype, it's only weapons the shoulder cannons and the finger harkens, literally anyone can beat it if you get close it's this slow bulky thing with no close range weapons besides just punching which we see when CC knees Jeremiah's Siegfried it's not that effective to do that.

What's one of the best thing in Code Geass is that episodes, which seems like fillers, are extremely important to the plot becuase in them there are usually one short scene that bring unexpected outcome to overall story. In this episoe, which is also is very funny and great, this scene is in the end. The two speech in mind between Lelouch and Euphy, after she anounced about making special administrated zone Japan, are unbelievebly awesome and well-made. That dualism and completely different points of view how to change the world is the key thing in this amazing anime. It looks like that dream and methods which was Suzaku after can be acomplished thanks to Euphemia. Let's see how Lelouch will react to this because Euphemia made a move that can defeat Zero. We can't wait to see your reaction to the next episode. It'll be beginning to the great final of season 1 and it'll give incredible amount of emotions, amusement, surprise and PTSD symptom. I remember reading somewhere that a kind king is not necessarily a good king and I think that quote defines Euphemia perfectly. Euphemia is a good person, but she is not a politician nor does she know how politics works and her narrative arc was never about preparing her to be a good leader. It's more personal. Euphemia lived her entire life from a position of privilege. She had a life of luxury and free of worries and difficulties. And, although she was aware of everything that was happening, she didn't really understand it until she moves to Japan, she becomes sub-vicequeen and she meets Suzaku. It's then that she begins to understand what her people are doing to the Japanese and she proceeds to question Britannia's ideology, which puts her in conflict with the values of her homeland and her own. Let's say that her narrative arc was about getting out of the influence and protection of her protective older sister and gaining confidence in herself to be able to defend her convictions and act in accordance with what she considered right, even if that meant opposing her family. In fact, Euphemia is "a catalyst" for Lelouch, Suzaku, and Cornelia. That's when she finds a purpose in life: "to make everyone happy." Too bad doing it isn't as easy as saying it, right? And if Nicolas Machiavelli taught us anything, it is that politics and morality do not mix. On the face of it, the SAZ will give the Japanese what they want. However, this is a pseudo-free Japan that brings some short-term benefits and significant long-term harms, as it will dismantle the largest and most popular active rebel organization, reaffirm the colony's loyalty to Britannia, and undermine the will to fight the Japanese, in exchange for restoring some rights and implementing a few social reforms. In the end, Japan would not gain its independence as it would remain a colony of Britannia and the status quo would remain. Lelouch knows it and understands that this ruins his plans to destroy Britannia (keep in mind that he needs the Japanese to continue fighting for their freedom and that the Black Knights are his means to that end). Schneizel "the diplomatic brother" also knows this and for that reason approved Euphemia's plan. The point is that she, Suzaku and a large number of Japanese believe that the SAZ will works and will be punished for it, since the world of Code Geass is especially cruel to idealistic characters. By the way, I like that montage of different Japanese people giving their opinion on the latest moves our characters have made (some are encouraged to assimilate to Britannia and others prefer to continue fighting for freedom). Kallen insulted Euphemia in episode 19 by referring to her as a puppet princess, and unfortunately, Kallen was right. In the end, Euphemia and her idea of a puppet state were used as a political tool and Britannia would maintain its ideology and its system and wash its hands of Euphemia later with exile (precisely the only Britannia that had the intention of making a change). Speaking of Kallen, that line of dialogue she spouts about how Zero was the only one who could give her orders, while Lelouch couldn't, is pure comedy. Like the beginning of this episode in which a teacher scolds Zero and Euphemia's Knight for being late with their schoolwork. These school episodes remind us that, although we are in the middle of a war and teenagers act like adults, they are still teenagers. The target audience of Code Geass is teenagers (hence the fanservice, the school subgenre, the fact that our main characters, except CC, are teenagers...). But it is a series that adults can enjoy for its dense themes and intense conflicts. Anyway, very few understand this series and its characters and I will always find that funny.

It's a bit unfortunate about Euphy. She's clearly smart, she figured Lelouch out with little evidence and figured out how to help Suzaku. But she's so sheltered and has so much blind kindness she has no idea the realities of what she wants. Even if we discount that sabotage almost certainly would happen from Britannians there are so many reasons tge SAZ would not work long term, but she's blind to it all And ultimately it was Cornelia's fault, just like how Lelouch sheltered Nunnally to having no idea how bad Britannia is and what Clovis and Cornelia now are, Cordelia has seriously hurt Euphemia’s potential.

The quote about a kind king not being a good king is demonstrably true if you look back on the various histories of the world, and I find it so fitting that you use it to open this comment before mentioning Machiavelli at the end of the first paragraph. As you explained in a comment for a previous episode, Il Principe is one of Lelouch's three favourite books, and as it so happens, in it, good ol' Niccolò argues that a good king (or prince as he phrases it) is one who shows boundless compassion to his subjects, but also uncompromising cruelty to his enemies. Lelouch certainly learned that lesson well, even though he has the unfortunate habit of leaning a bit too much towards cruelty even with his allies when he feels the situation slip out of his control

As a reminder, Lelouch's motivation is revenge. He's not Japanese, nor does he particularly care about the plight of the Japanese. Ultimately he wants to dismantle Britannia as revenge for the Royal Family killing his mother and maiming Nunnaly. That's why he's so pissed off at Euphemia, because the Black Knights are just a means for him to have an army to wage war against Britannia, and by relinquishing Japan and granting the Japanese people equal rights, she effectively destroyed the impetus for the Black Knights to even exist.

I dont necessarily think that the royal princess of an imperial, colonizing power going "hey conquered people, you will be forcibly disarmed and then you get to go live on a reservation, isn't that great?" Could be reasonably construed as as support or solidarity. I'm with Lelouch.

Fun Fact: A kiss between Kallen and Zero was planned at the end of season 1. In theory, this kiss would be given by Lelouch to Kallen, who would receive it blindfolded. The kiss was supposed to give Kallen courage and determination in her moments of doubt during the battle. Obviously this idea was cancelled. I must say that I'm satisfied. Kallen isn't in love with Zero, she's just devoted to him for who he is, what he fights for, and his exploits (even though they have their similarities, Lelouch and Kallen are not V and Evie, and fortunately, the official secondary material confirms what I'm saying). I don't see Lelouch taking the initiative either, even if we've already seen that he likes to tease Kallen and that's a sign of attraction. Therefore, a kiss at this point in the story would be strange. We will have to see what happens with Lelouch and Kallen in the future :D

Just a few things. The girl was the one geass to mark the wall. Euphi didn’t have the power to do that but in the beginner of the epi she was talking to schneizel and he approved her plan, so this was the plan. And the last scene if leoluch was just light’s, nothing especial 😂

Lelouch's goal was never equality and freedom for the Japanese, it was destroying Britania, and the Japanese resistance movement/Black Knights were a tool for that. So Euphemia giving the Japanese some measure of what they want undercuts his plan. It's not that he thinks Euphemia's plan is a "fake" better life for the Japanese, but because helping the Japanese was never his goal. I feel how he reacts is the series taking a good opportunity to show he's not nearly as heroic as the role he plays. I also feel it shows that Suzaku's method, working within the system to earn a better place for the Japanese without having to fight and kill, isn't necessarily completely hopeless. Euphie's plan isn't full freedom for Japan, but it could end up being a step upon that path.

The reason why Lelouch was upset with Suzaku and Euphemia being a couple, is because it's hinted that Nunnally actually had feelings for Suzaku. So he is upset that it broke his sister's heart.

That being said THEY ARE ALL SIBLINGS. The Emperor is a slut and has like 40 consorts and their kids are all in line for the throne. Battle royal inheritance. Like that fun shitty movie Stardust.

not sure if you caught onto this yet But Lloyd is what you call a High Functioning Sociopath. He has no morals and 0 interests in relationships however is constantly intrigued by abnormal things and he has to know what makes it tick. So he's not gay or straight or anything like that he just has absolutely no interest beyond what makes it "beneficial" on a logical standpoint.
