You're mistaking what borrowed power is. Lelouch's power is his own. He is not reliant on any one individual to be able to excercise it. It cannot be taken away from him. A nobleman's power is their name. They make a mistake and they can lose all their power because they are simply using their place in society as their power. Once their higher ups decide enough, that power is relinquished. Lelouch cannot lose his geass because someone above him decides to have him lose it, therefore it is not borrowed power

Euphy is the only person so far to try to resist Geas and it’s heartbreaking. Seeing her realize what’s happening, what she’s about to do, and the horror of that realization is gut-wrenching. And then the way she goes about her new task with her trademark cheerfulness is disturbing as hell. Needless to say if I wasn’t already hooked on this show I definitely am now.

With his Geass, Lelouch has ordered normal men to kill themselves, ordered a suicidal man to live at any cost, and they all just... did it. No hesitation, no self-reflection, just immediate obedience. The fact that Euphemia was actually able to try to fight it even a little shows just how powerful her will to not kill people is.

Nothing in particular seems like it would have caused that reaction. He knew what he was doing, he was just in a frustrated pissed off mood and was letting himself fly off the handle a bit. I do admit he definitely winces in pain when he closes it though, its clearly foreshadowing the issues he's having.

@@LettsReactunfortunately when it comes to Code Geass, people only care to watch the reactions to the ending as it's universally considered to have the best ending in all of anime but I feel sad that the other episodes don't get the same love as the ending does because this is a phenomenal series. You will be shocked when you see the view count sky rocket astronomically for the finale episode of Code Geass. If you look at reactions channels that have completed Code Geass, you can clearly see a huge difference in the views of the other episodes when compared to the finale. It's like how death note 2nd part views dropped so much but everyone came to watch the finale. I just hope you react to the finale of Code Geass before Attack on titan ends because you will realise how much inspiration Attack on titan has taken from Code Geass especially towards the end

Think this episode will reach a good viewcount, since it's an interesting episode for people watching reactions cause of the twist. After I think they will drop till around episode 18 of the second season, where the action really starts. Don't even know how often I've seen the last episodes of the show, but it was way more often, than all other episodes of the show, since most of them are build up and mostly just interesting the first 1-3 times, while the final part is insanly good to rewatch over and over again.

While the story mostly revolves around Lelouch's hubris, I'd argue that it's more of a Shakespearian tragedy. Which in essence is the same thing as a Greek tragedy, but with collateral victims for added sad effect. And boy, do Lelouch's action affect innocent bystanders, from Shirley and Euphy to all the people in that stadium Besides, the show was heavily inspired by Hamlet, which also happens to be one Lelouch's three favourite books. Go figure. A young boy who tends to overthink everything and who uses his smarts to seek revenge on an evil family loves Hamlet. Shocking I know (Shirley = Ophelia confirmed)

INtersting note- In legend, a Geass is viewed both as a curse AND a boon. If you honor whatever vow you made, or whatever demand was levied, wit the Geass it helps you. Empowers you. It will turn fortune and people to your cause, lengthen your life if needed, etc. Whatever you need to be empowered. But if you go against that, in principle or action, it turns on you. Brings you all the opposites of these things. Whatever it can do to make you miserable and ruin you, it will. So, when Lelouch went against his wish to destroy Brittannia... The Geass lashed out.

To be more specific, the Irish Geas (with only one s) will usually bring you disease and/or death very quickly after you betray your oath. And a vast majority of Irish myths that involve it present a character with two or more Geas that become incompatible at a certain point Take for instance the greatest Irish hero and one major inspiration for Lelouch, Cú Chulainn. He had a Geas never to eat dog meat, and one never to refuse food from an old woman. One day, an old woman (who might have been a disguised Morrigan, one of the major inspirations for C.C.) offered him dog food He died the next day

I’ve heard people say this shows the “cursed” aspect of geass. It’s not just because he overused the power. They say because Lelouch’s faith wavered in his wish(to defeat his father and Britannia was what he wanted to do when he received Geass) in that moment his Geass became a curse, and he destroyed that peace he was going to create with Euphy. Even if his wish was to make a peaceful world for his sister when he made that contract he wanted revenge more than just peace. Now he can no longer turn it off so his curse becomes something he has to deal with forevermore.
@Megalomaniac_Trans_Lesbian

This ties back not only with what C.C. told him numerous times before, but with the mythological origin of the power. In Irish mythology, a Geas is both a blessing and curse. It is an oath you make or a command that is placed upon you (wink wink) by a powerful being, and so long as you obey this oath/command, it empowers you with miraculous health, strength, will, etc. But betray it once and it will bring you misery, loss, disease, and nine times out of ten will kill you very quickly. Of course, a vast majority of Irish myths that involve it present a character with two or more Geas that become incompatible at a certain point Take for instance the greatest Irish hero and one major inspiration for Lelouch, Cú Chulainn. He had a Geas never to eat dog meat, and one never to refuse food from an old woman. I think the plot had to make a point to show that his power is indeed absolute obedience that no matter how it’s a complete 180 of a person, it can be done if he deems it so; regardless of how out of character it is for someone like Euphy although I was so dumbfounded when I initially watched this episode still in grade school because Euphy would forever be remembered this way despite of how inherently good she used to be. This was such a huge game changer in this season. The first time Lelouch lost control had to be this one time he didn’t even really mean what he said.

He can't even think to give her a silly example that most people would default too, because he is completely stuck in revolutionary leader / fugitive mode, and has been for eight years, always working an angle even when there's no danger and he could allow himself to relax. That says a lot about the standards he holds himself up to, and the stress he is constantly experiencing

The future of Euphy was flawed. Her aurhority was the puppet type. She was placed in area 11 as a figure only but really her authority is empty. Lelouch understands this and thats why he was furious of how naive euphy was. The power dynamics playing between britania and japan, the emperor down to his heirs was clear to lelouch that what euphy proposed was just a utopia. To have a future of peace where his sister can live was lelouch's wish and euphy's utopia cant encapsulate that

Second stage would be lelouch agreeing with her plan because it all boils down to their resolve. Euphy's resolve was greater than lelouch why? because when she told him she had given up her name in which this means everything for a royalty just to make her plans into reality additionally schneizel supporting this idea of hers then the situation changed. Also knowing cornelia and her love for euphy she would now be somewhat tied down to this new situation where her beloved sister is one leading a special zone.

He witnessed how much out of control it could get with Mao. Just a bit earlier he's been using it without really thinking about it, like they pointed out, to make that one man go away. And he almost already lost control at that point, almost telling his friend to go home and end himself... And after all of that, when confronting Euphy, he even has a strange eye-related headache, even holding his eye/head and thinks it is a good idea to hypothetically order her to such a degree. She is such a pacifist he could have just ordered her to shoot in his foot or something... Or just about ANYTHING else...

He even says it himself while talking to C.C. at the end, how he knew the risks going in, and especially after his encounter with Mao, and still he just acted like it was fine and he was above it all. This is his just desserts, the consequences of his all-encompassing hubris that he thought he could dodge forever. And it messes him up for the rest of his life, as it should. Geas, literally meaning "taboo" in the Irish language, is a reoccurring element in Celtic mythologies. It refers to a strong curse or magical stipulation placed upon an individual which either compels them to act in a certain way or forbids a particular action. Though obeying one's geas can result in strength and blessings for the one sealed with it, breaking it can lead to severe consequences -- up to and including death, as was the case for Euphemia. The term of Lelouch's contract with C.C was to use his Geass to destroy Britannia. The moment he broke that contract by shaking hands with Euphemia, basically meaning he surrenders to her plan, he's faced with the condition of the broken contract and his curse causes him to lose all hope. On a personal note Euphemia's plan was vowed to create a far worde problem First red flag was that the higher ups in the colonial empire agreed to it. Britannia gave the Japanese a ''safe zone'' where they can be themselves, but that's the furthest thing from freedom because now the only benefit they got is being restricted by the oppressor. '' Hey it's bad but atleast we gave you this over there to benefit from, so don't blame us if you don't like everything else '' They're just under a different type of control and I wouldn't be surprised if it ended in a japanese civil war between those that wish to stay in the SAZ and those who were against it for the reasons i gave.

Indeed, give it enough time, and the SAZ would become much like an open air prison. Or perhaps more accurately to Brittanian culture, *like a zoo* As for the comparison between Geass and Geas, it's an excellent and incredibly subtle answer to any question one might have about why Lelouch is doubling down and falling for the sunk cost fallacy afterwards instead of cutting his losses. He can't stop. His Geass would just keep making things worse for everyone around him if he tried. He chose his path for the rest of his life the very moment he accepted C.C.'s contract without even asking about the terms and conditions. He even lampshades it himself during their final on screen conversation in the second to last episode Also worth noting, a vast majority of Irish myths present a character with two or more Geas that become incompatible at a certain point. Take for instance the greatest Irish hero and one major inspiration for Lelouch, Cú Chulainn. He had a Geas never to eat dog meat, and one never to refuse food from an old woman. One day, an old woman (who might have been a disguised Morrigan, one of the major inspirations for C.C.) offered him dog food He died the next day

This is one of the roughest episodes of the series. Because it was Euphy. If it was almost anyone else other than Euphemia, it wouldn't be so bad. But the fact that it is Euphy just hurts so much more. It makes this whole event the worst possible version of the events. Lelouch accidentally ordering the genocide of the Japanese, the actual execution of the order, and everything still to come. I love hate this episode. Also, yes Lelouch's Geass is out of control. And Euphy resisted it. She's the first and perhaps only person we ever see resist his command. What could that mean...

My thoughts went to this episode pretty much instantly, and I'm sure the same is true for most people who have already watched the series, since Euphie's cheerful "I'm going to kill the Japanese" is pretty much the biggest gear shift we see for a Geassed character in the whole series.

I love how they show Lelouch's inner emotional turmoil via the pain and accidental use of his Geass. He's wavering from his path because Euphy "beat" him with love and acceptance, which conflicts with his true desires of revenge and destroying the regime and it's really up in the air that if it automatically activated because of his turmoil or if it activated in a supernatural sense to force him to stay to his "contract"/desires, or even both.

The twist is great imo, so shocking. Best thing in this show is that soooo much happens every episode, this kind of storytelling will take 5 episodes in another show but here it just has no breaks! I don't know what the general consensus is but I like R2 more, without spoiling anything it somehow gets even more grander than it already is in scope. And of course, the ending is brilliant.

Thing about this is Lelouch did not mean for that to happen. In that moment Lelouch admitted that he was beaten, was able to relax and drop his guard, and told the truth for once. No ego or pride just equality with his family, something which Lelouch has always stated was only his mother and sister. It’s sad because Euphy goodness really did rub off on him and made him feel happy and safe. Plus he just came off a rage high that lasted a week with Euphy, the Geass activated at the worst time for him emotionally and mentally.

So why did Lelouch's Geass activate just as he talked about a hypothetical scenario in which he orders Euphemia to wipe out all the Elevens? For two reasons. 1. His arrogance: There is an erroneous generalization in the fandom that the massacre that occurred at the SAZ was the product of a joke by Lelouch. But it's not true. It's hyperbole (or exaggeration, in simple terms). Euphemia doesn't believe Lelouch when he says that he is capable of dictating any order he wants and she will comply without any choice. Only she says "stop playing (joking) with me" because she's too nice to accuse Lelouch of blatantly lying to her and, come on, what he's saying isn't credible. But we know he is perfectly capable of doing it because we have witnessed it. The thing is, Lelouch insists on it because he wants to convince her that he is soooo powerful that he could order something that would go against her nature and she would have to obey. It's pure arrogance due to him being raised as a prince (and being born in an empire with Social Darwinist ideology) and, as CC pointed out in episode 7, Lelouch is a sore loser. He has a hard time admitting when he loses, so he disguises his wounded ego with bragging (Lelouch isn't good at feeling vulnerable, too). We can relate this to the concept of hubris from Greek tragedy. Hubris is usually understood as "arrogance", "pride", "excessive confidence". But it's not exactly that. Let's say that this is the modern reassignment of the term, although, deep down, the original concept does have to do with arrogance and pride. Let me explain: there is no literal English translation of "hybris", but the closest thing is "disproportionateness", in the sense of "transgressing the limits imposed by the gods on mortals." That's hubris. Believe that you are above the gods. Lelouch boasted of being able to twist the wills of others to his whim and ended up giving an order against his own will (aha, Lelouch, what does it feel like to be on the other side of the table? How does it feel to be forced to do something you don't want to?). An order that brought misfortune to thousands of innocents, including his sister and himself. 2. Lelouch made a Faustian contract: I'm going to have to get ahead of an issue that is addressed later, which doesn't seem like a spoiler to me since it's implicit, but maybe some people will be upset if I don't put out a warning, so read at your own risk. It must be understood that Geass is the manifestation of the user's deepest desire. It gives them the power necessary to achieve that desire. Lelouch began to desire power when his father exiled him and his sister to Japan to use them as political tools, since he felt powerless. That's why his Geass manifests as mind control. When Euphemia inaugurated the SAZ, she put Lelouch in conflict. Even though he planned to show Britannia as a manipulative and lying empire at Euphemia's expense to look like a victim and martyr to the Japanese, Lelouch didn't really want to use Euphemia or hurt her in any way. This is why his Geass eye was constantly hurting throughout the episode. Lelouch knew deep down that he would join Euphemia if she pushed him hard enough, and he knew, furthermore, that this went against his wish: to destroy Britannia. Worse yet, if Lelouch allied himself with Euphemia, he would ruin everything he had been actively working for until now as Lelouch would eventually be forced to take off Zero's mask and become a pawn of Britannia. But still, he did it. Partly because of his affection for his dear sister. Partly because Lelouch was shocked to discover that she promoted the SAZ because of Nunnally. In fact, the program tells us that he does not want to use his Geass on Euphemia by unmasking himself in front of her in a literal and metaphorical sense since it is a sign of vulnerability (it is known that when someone reveals their cards early, it is because they really have no intention of using them). That is why his Geass, which is supernatural in nature and not a machine that Lelouch operates, activates at that moment as it keeps him on the path to fulfilling his wish. It is here that Lelouch first realizes that Geass is an evil power. For all this and another reason I can't reveal, this scene is so important to the story.

Lelouch’s Geass going wild is weird, it hurts Lelouch before this with the noble, C.C. doesn’t understand what's going on at first and when she does she says it’s "too soon". Something is going on here, something that is not normal for Geass. But what? Also it's been detailed how the SAZ was doimed to fail. We even see here, how many people were applying? How many couls such an area hold. Final note ,Euphy was under control. But the people actually doing the slaughter just jumped to it. 'Equality' was. Ever in their heads.
