The two extremes of Nate traumatizing Maddie to then going to Jules to apologize….. it’s like he wants to try and right his wrongs but he’s too aggressive to go about things correctly and respectfully. All that anger and trauma from growing up with his dad is making him lash out at everyone, and he wants a reaction from Maddie because she hadn’t called him at all after she found out about Cassie.

Cal himself is a terrible person because of how he couldn't be with Derek and had to conform to heteronormativity AND be a father at the age of just 18-19. @@Desmondenae_ I don’t think they’re saying he’s not a villain - just that all the characters have more than one layer and explains how they got to where they are - the director may be also playing on expectations and how humans always have to label and make addicts/POC/LGBT people the villains. I think in that context the director openly plays with the audience’s opinion or suggestive glimances into Nate’s sexuality and psychology, leading back from his childhood - not that just because he has a humane/relative backstory that he should be excused. Same with Cal, ranting about his sexuality doesn’t redeem him and I think he knows that - he’s letting it out for himself.

Kinda sad they didn't interview Rina Yang on her approach to filming this episode. Which was in my opinion one of the better looking ones. It was so refreshing to see a grounded approach to the cinematography of a show that can often times be soooooooo stylistic for just plain stylisism. I think people also don't get how hard it is to make things "naturalistic" and good. Anyway. Great episode. Feels like Sam actually wrote a second draft for once.

i think the scene where jules asks nate, “so what are you like a good person now?” and he says “absolutely not” is kind of the writers way of telling us this isn’t meant to be a redemption arc, its just meant to show that nate’s trauma n issues are so deep that he can have those “normal” or even “good” moments, but at the end of the day he’s still just as angry and manipulative as he always was, and he’ll always be that abusive person. idk if that makes sense, but that was just my take on it
