I think in that context the director openly plays with the audience’s opinion or suggestive glimances into Nate’s sexuality and psychology, leading back from his childhood - not that just because he has a humane/relative backstory that he should be excused. Same with Cal, ranting about his sexuality doesn’t redeem him and I think he knows that - he’s letting it out for himself.

the fact that Kat’s past story line of her being an underage cam girl is literally just being abandoned.. there are so many questions from last season that I still have that aren’t being addressed and it’s disappointing

She at least recognises that she made a choice and it was a bad one though. I guess at that point there isn't anything else in her mind to lose, so why not make it worth it by getting the guy in the end. It's her own twisted love story.
